Of particular interest are papers related to Swanson's childhood (mostly photographs), which reveal the life of young "Glory" Swanson growing up in Chicago, Key West, and Puerto Rico. Also present are numerous photographs of ancestors (both the Swanson and Klanowsky families), and of Swanson's descendants. Formal portraits and candid photographs of Miss Swanson are contained in this series, as well as photographs of close friends and famous associates. The work of a number of notable photographers, including Ernest A. Bachrach, Russell Ball, Cecil Beaton, Marcus Blechman, Irving Chidnoff, G. L. Manuel Frères, Maurice Goldberg, Philippe Halsman, George Hoyningen-Huene, George Hurrell, G. Maillard Kesslere, Donald Biddle Keyes, Roddy McDowall, Jack Mitchell, Melbourne Spurr, Edward Steichen, Karl Struss, Stig Svedfelt, and others is included. Most voluminous in this series are extensive personal financial and property records. The financial records provide a wealth of detail, as personal and business finances had a tendency to overlap occasionally, informing other areas of Swanson's life which are otherwise poorly documented in this collection. The property records document ownership of apartments, homes, and real estate, as well as automobiles, furs, and jewelry. Travel files primarily relate to foreign travel (Cuba, England, France, Germany, Holland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Monte Carlo, Portugal, Puerto Rico, Russia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and others) for both business and pleasure. Notable are files concerning travel to England for a command performance of Sunset Boulevard in 1950.

Also included is a large group of fan mail, and fans' addresses kept on index cards, with carbons of responses, or notations that photographs or letters were sent, or perhaps a phone call was made.

The records of the DuPont Theatre consist primarily of public relations and advertising materials related to the theater's operation between 1919 and 2001. As such, they present a sequence of changing tastes in popular entertainment in a medium-sized American city. The administrative files include selected blueprints, a business plan, 75th anniversary materials, and a chronological listing of plays performed from 1913 to 2001. The publicity files (1876-1992) include publicity about the theater and reviews and articles about plays presented there. Press clippings (1959-1997), press releases (1987-1991), and press materials (1988-1994) cover both the theater and the productions staged there. Press kits (1987-1998) are materials issued by the production companies and distributed to promote presentations at the theater. They contain press releases, photos, reviews and other information about the plays, which the theater was to distribute to advertise the shows in the local media. The records of plays (1981-1999) are more comprehensive files on various productions, including press kits, advertising, brochures featuring the play's poster art, biographical sheets on the performers and writers, photos, including standard head shots and stage scenes, and copies of newspaper advertisements and reviews. The "Playbill" theater programs (1919-1999, incomplete) were published by the touring companies as variations on those issued in connection with the original Broadway productions. They contain the outline of acts, scenes and musical numbers, the cast of players, and background information on the show and members of the company. In addition to this material supplied by the company, about half the booklet was given over to local advertising and news items to cover printing costs, in this case specific to the Wilmington area. These include ads for new suburban subdivisions in the 1950s and 1960s. There are some Playbills for performances in other venues. Flyers and advertisements date from 1949-1992. The artifacts were part of lobby displays that highlighted the history of the Theater in the 1980s and 1990s, and include old keys to actors' dressing rooms. Signed playbills and photographs date from 1953-1997, with the bulk from 1994-1997. Perfomers for whom photos and publicity sheets are available are listed below. All aspects of Eliot Elisofon's career are documented by photographs, transparencies, slides, negatives, film, research material, notes, photo captions, logbooks, correspondence, agreements and other documents, drafts, proofs, tearsheets, clippings, scrapbooks, catalogs, sketch books, and artifacts, all dating from 1930 to 1988. The archive is organized in ten series: I. Photography Files, 1933-1973, nd; II. Film and Television Projects, 1953-1973, 1986; III. Writings and Lectures, 1938-1973; IV. Artwork, 1935-1969; V. Exhibitions, 1936-1986; VI. Private Art Collection, 1939-1969, nd; VII. Food Files, 1943-1969, nd; VIII. Correspondence, 1930-1973, nd; IX. About Elisofon, 1930-1985; and X. Elin Elisofon, 1976-1988, nd. Series I forms the bulk of the collection, with most of Elisofon's photography assignments for LIFE magazine represented. Elisofon's photographs were first published in LIFE in 1937. He worked for that magazine as an official staff photographer from 1942 to 1964 and then on a contract basis until 1972. Among his subjects were celebrities, politicians, places, art, architecture, food, and a variety of social topics. In addition, Elisofon did freelance work and contributed photographs for Time-Life Books and other publications; many of those photographs, as well as photographs taken for personal reasons, are also included in the archive. Elisofon worked as a still photographer or served in other technical capacities for numerous films, including "Bell, Book and Candle," "Dr. Dolittle," "The Greatest Story Ever Told," "Khartoum," and "Moulin Rouge." He also photographed the filming of "The African Queen." Elisofon was involved in the production of the television documentary series "Black African Heritage" and "Africa." These and other projects are all represented. Drafts of Elisofon's books include those for "Food Is a Four-Letter Word," "Color Photography," "The Nile," "Java Diary," and "Erotic Spirituality." Materials from his frequent lectures and from exhibitions of his photographs, watercolors, and collection of art and sculpture are also present. Elisofon served as a founding trustee of the Museum of African Art, and the collection includes records of his donations and bequests to that museum and others. Recipes and menus gathered by Elisofon comprise Series VII, Food Files. Among noteworthy correspondents in the collection are editors at LIFE, including Maitland Edey, Wilson Hicks, and Edward Thompson; Joseph Campbell, for whose book "The Art of Indian Asia" Elisofon provided photographs; Warren Robbins of the Museuem of African Art; and Lee Talbot of the Smithsonian. Elisofon's daughter Elin's files on her father's work and life make up the final series.
