The collection is comprised of papers of George Washington Campbell, the Polk family, Plunkett family, Brown family, and Richard S. Ewell. Correspondence relates in part the activities and experiences of these allied families in the 19th and 20th centuries. The volumes consist of diaries and scrapbooks documenting Quintard's activities as a Confederate chaplain, Episcopal bishop and university chancellor during the periods 1864-1866, 1872-1873, and 1875-1898. Entries, 1864-1865, pertain to activities after the Siege of Atlanta; his residence and associates in Columbus, Georgia; people and places visited on a trip through Alabama and Mississippi to join General John B. Hood and the Army of Tennessee; his duties as chaplain in the Confederate Army before and after the battles of Franklin and Nashville; the defense of Columbus under Major General Howell Cobb; and the destruction and atrocities committed by Federal forces under the command of General James H. Wilson. Entries record Quintard's conversations with John B. Hood, Major General Johnson, and Lieutenant General Stephen D. Lee and express his opinions on matters pertaining to General P. G. T. Beauregard. Postwar entries record Quintard's trips through Georgia, the Carolinas, Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, Texas, England, and Europe and provide some genealogical and historical information about people (including prominent Episcopalians) and places visited. Entries mention sermons and informal talks to solicit funds for the University of the South; Quintard's work as an educator; his leadership in the Afro-American Conference of Protestant Episcopal clergymen; and his interest in the School of Theology for colored priests at Nashville. Scrapbook materials include photographs, letters, programs, invitations, newspaper clippings, and printed items.

Harris, George C. (George Carroll), 1833 or 4-1911. George Carroll Harris papers, 1836-1886.

Title: George Carroll Harris papers, 1836-1886.

Family correspondence, genealogical data, and a scrapbook of Rev. George C. Harris. Most letters, dated 1855-1886, are from Elisha W. Harris (1799-1887), father of George C. Harris. There are also letters from brothers Arthur H. Harris, a lawyer who was elected Louisiana attorney general in 1873 and was murdered soon thereafter, and Dr. Elisha Myrick Harris, a Confederate soldier who was killed early in the war in Virginia. Most letters were written from Louisiana, where the family had moved from Tennessee. The family plantation near Monroe was named Waco Place. Topics dealt with in the papers include Southern life before, during, and after the Civil War, Louisiana and national politics, slave labor, the raising of cotton, steamboats, railroads, the weather, farm conditions, the postal service, the Civil War, fever epidemics, the 1860 election, Andrew Johnson's impeachment trial, and reconstruction. Also included are letters to George C. Harris from Bishop C.T. Quintard, 1858-1878.

Topics include: money problems, fortunes of his two sons and daughter, his ill health, religious reflections, work on art works, particularly the first two of his series of four paintings on the redemption of mankind. Mentions clergymen and other prominent figures of the day, some of which are listed below. Other items are clippings, photographs, and letters; and an AMS, 1847, by Oertel, of German poems (12 p.).

Miscellaneous items by and about Bishop Quintard include a circular of 1865 issued by Quintard and other members of the Freedmans' Commision of the Episcopal Church, concerning the condition of negroes in the South and appealing for support, Quintard's offers to help Bishop William Rollinson Whittingham in Maryland, and visits to Baltimore, 1866. A Pastoral Letter to the Diocese of Tennessee, 1867, deals with Church charities, help for the poor and orphans, and the need for ministers. Other references are to Quintard's letter to Dr. Dollinger concerning the Bonn Conference of the Old Catholic Churches, 1876, a circular asking the views of other bishops on the rights of alms at visitations, 1877, and other minor matters.
