Charles Todd Quintard diaries, 1864-1898.

The volumes consist of diaries and scrapbooks documenting Quintard's activities as a Confederate chaplain, Episcopal bishop and university chancellor during the periods 1864-1866, 1872-1873, and 1875-1898. Entries, 1864-1865, pertain to activities after the Siege of Atlanta; his residence and associates in Columbus, Georgia; people and places visited on a trip through Alabama and Mississippi to join General John B. Hood and the Army of Tennessee; his duties as chaplain in the Confederate Army before and after the battles of Franklin and Nashville; the defense of Columbus under Major General Howell Cobb; and the destruction and atrocities committed by Federal forces under the command of General James H. Wilson. Entries record Quintard's conversations with John B. Hood, Major General Johnson, and Lieutenant General Stephen D. Lee and express his opinions on matters pertaining to General P. G. T. Beauregard. Postwar entries record Quintard's trips through Georgia, the Carolinas, Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, Texas, England, and Europe and provide some genealogical and historical information about people (including prominent Episcopalians) and places visited. Entries mention sermons and informal talks to solicit funds for the University of the South; Quintard's work as an educator; his leadership in the Afro-American Conference of Protestant Episcopal clergymen; and his interest in the School of Theology for colored priests at Nashville. Scrapbook materials include photographs, letters, programs, invitations, newspaper clippings, and printed items.

Charles Todd Quintard was a chaplain and surgeon of the Confederate Army and a Protestant Episcopal Bishop of the Diocese of Tennessee, 1865-1898.
