Author; d. 1997.
Author.
James Albert Michener was born in 1907 to unknown parents and raised as an orphan in the care of widow Mabel Michener of Doylestown, Pennsylvania. By the time he graduated from high school in 1925, he had visited 45 out of the 48 states. He was given a scholarship to Swarthmore, and after graduating summa cum laude in 1929, he traveled and continued his education at nine universities inside and outside the United States. During this time, he also taught in Pennsylvania, Colorado, and at the Harvard School of Education. When he was not teaching, Michener worked as a textbook editor in New York, and he joined the British Merchant Marines. During WWII, he joined the Navy, making use of his experience in the British Merchant Marines to climb through the ranks to lieutenant and his knowledge of history to carry out sensitive assignments in the South Pacific. It was this experience that brought about Tales of the South Pacific in 1947, which won a Pulitzer Prize. Michener used this novel as the cornerstone of his writing career, publishing almost 50 books in the next 50 years, including Sayonara, Hawaii, The Source, Iberia, Caravans, The Covenant, Sports in America, and Poland. In 1977, a four-part public television series called The World of Michener covered Israel, Hawaii, Spain, and Poland, just a few of the countries upon which his books have been based. Several other books have been turned into movies or miniseries, and two of his novels have been turned into musicals (most notably South Pacific, which won its own Pulitzer Prize). During the time that he was publishing, however, Michener did not ignore the world around him. He ran for Congress in 1962 and held positions on several committees, including the Pennsylvania Constitutional Convention, the U.S. Postal Service stamp committee, and an advisory position on a council for NASA. He also spoke often at congressional hearings and at functions of those organizations in which he held particular interest. James A. Michener died at the age of 90 on October 16, 1997 in Texas, three years after his third wife, Mari Yoriko Sabusawa. He had no children.
James A. Michener was born in New York City in 1907 and traveled extensively throughout the United States as a young adult. He graduated with honors from Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania and also attended St. Andrew's University in Scotland before returning to teach in Pennsylvania. Michener subsequently held teaching positions at the Colorado State Teachers College and Harvard University, and then worked as a textbook editor in New York until World War II erupted. Young Michener joined the Navy and his experiences in the Pacific Theater helped shape his first book, Tales of the South Pacific, which went on to win the Pulitzer Prize. Throughout his writing career, Michener drew acclaim for his masterfully crafted historical novels, among them Texas, published in 1985. Tracing the lives of four families, this epic spans four centuries and two continents and charts the formation of several great dynasties from the age of the conquistadors to modern times.
Michener's involvement in public policy issues included a run for Congress in 1962, serving as secretary to the Pennsylvania constitutional convention, and acting as an advisor to NASA, the U.S. Postal Service, and the International Broadcasting Board. His many honors and awards included recognition by the President's Committee on the Arts and Humanities and the United States' highest civilian honor, the Medal of Freedom. Michener spent his final years based at the University of Texas at Austin and died in 1997.

Thanks for quick reply to query. Believes he should not take Raynolds' The Quality of Quiros, because he should not read a fictional account of something he is working on. Will take Ledyard's Tonga, however.

Jack Levine papers
Title:
Jack Levine papers
The papers of New York social realist painter and printmaker Jack Levine date from 1923-1999, and measure 3.2 linear feet. Levine's career is documented through biographical material, scattered letters, notes and a speech, writings, student drawings, three scrapbooks, printed material and nearly one linear foot of photographs of Levine, his family, and his colleagues.Found within the papers are two driver's licenses and several biographical accounts, and scattered letters from colleagues including one each from John Taylor Arms, Hyman Bloom, Leonard Bocour, René d'Harnoncourt, Lloyd Goodrich, Jacob Lawrence, and Homer Saint-Gaudens discussing various art-related events. There is only one carbon copy of a letter written by Levine. The correspondence includes oversized photographs of the members of the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Additional photographs of the members are found in the Photograph series. Notes and writings are primarily typescripts about Jack Levine written by others. There is also a transcript of one speech, "Jack Levine Speaks Regarding the Donation of 108 of his Drawings to the Archives" delivered by Levine at the Fogg Art Museum.Artwork consists entirely of Levine's student drawings including anatomical studies, neighborhood genre scenes, copies of Old Masters, and a series of images of symphony musicians. Some of the drawings display themes that are reflected in his later paintings.Three scrapbooks contain clippings that document Levine's career and reflect his political interests. Additional printed material consists of a comprehensive collection of clippings and exhibition announcements and catalogs. There is also an announcement for a lecture by Levine, press releases, calendars of events, reproductions of artwork, programs, brochures including one for <emph render="italic">Facing East</emph>, a portfolio of Levine's prints, and three books.Photographs include numerous photographs of Levine throughout his artistic career, including images of his wife, painter Ruth Gikow, their daughter Susanna, and colleagues including Hyman Bloom, Leonard Bocour, Alexander Dobkin, Joachim Probst, and Russian poet Yevgeny Yevtushenko. Especially notable is a series of photographs of Levine printmaking with Emiliano Sorini and Ruth Gikow. There are photographs of Levine serving on art juries and panels with Eleanor Coen, Joseph Hirsch, Gabor Peterdi, Studs Terkel, and Max Weber, and attending events with Lawrence Fleischman, Betty Friedan, Edith Halpert, Mauricio Lasansky, Gypsy Rose Lee, Pope Paul VI, and Raphael Soyer. A small album contains photographs of Levine and various buildings in Boston. There are also photographs of miscellaneous exhibition installations including Levine's retrospective at the Jewish Museum, and of artwork by Levine and others.Group photographs of the members of the American Academy of Arts and Letters are found here, and include Will Barnet, Paul Cadmus, Chuck Close, David Levine, George Tooker, and John Updike. Additional group photographs of the members that were originally enclosed with letters are found in the correspondence series.

1907-1983. Papers. Series I. Correspondence
Title:
1907-1983. Papers. Series I. Correspondence
Includes correspondence, with various enclosures (clippings, photographs, financial or legal documents, script proposals, etc.), from Miss Swanson's family, friends, business associates, acquaintances, and fans, spanning many notables from numerous fields of endeavor. As many relationships overlapped personal, career, business, and other interests, this series should by no means be regarded as purely personal correspondence. The earliest correspondence in the collection is from her family. Most 1920s and 1930s correspondence is film related and located in Series II., Career, especially in the United Artists subseries. The 1940s are most prominently represented in the Multiprises, Inc. subseries of Series III., Business Interests. Among the correspondents are: Roy E. Aitken, Michelle Farmer Amon, Kenneth Anger, Robert Balzer, Tallulah Bankhead, Richard Barthelmess, Earl Blackwell, Virginia Bowker, Charles Brackett, Lewis L. Bredin, Harry A. Bruno, Carol Burnett, George Bush, Francis X. Bushman, Richard E. Byrd, Walter Byron, James Cagney, Eddie Cantor, Carol Channing, Maurice Chevalier, Henri Coanda, Ronald Colman, Noel Coward, Fleur Cowles, Joan Crawford, George Cukor, Michael Curtiz, Gloria Daly, Raymond W. Daum, William M. Davey, Marion Davies, Cecil B. DeMille, Indira Devi, Thomas E. Dewey, Theodore Dreiser, William Dufty, Alan Dwan, Nelson Eddy, David Edstrom, Mamie Doud Eisenhower, Harlan Ellison, Douglas Fairbanks, Douglas Fairbanks, Jr., Michael Farmer, José Ferrer, Hy Gardner, George, Duke of Kent, George Gershwin, Margaret Ghika, Lillian Gish, Hubert de Givenchy, Elinor Glyn, Edmund Goulding, Gladys Griffith, Alec Guinness, Edmund Gwenn, Forrest Halsey, Oscar Hammerstein II, Helen Hayes, Edith Head, William Randolph Hearst, Ethel Helmsing, Katharine Hepburn, Conrad Hilton, Prince Franz Hohenlohe, Bob Hope, Hedda Hopper, Edward Everett Horton, L. Ron Hubbard, René Hubert, William Bradford Huie, George S. Kaufman, Edward Moore Kennedy, Harold J. Kennedy, John F. Kennedy, Joseph P. ("Sport") Ward, Clifton Webb, Orson Welles, Dan Werlé, Billy Wilder, Lois Wilson, Walter Winchell, Sam Wood, Adelaide Woodruff, Florenz Ziegfeld, Adolph Zukor, and others. Among some of the more intriguing pieces of correspondence are: a letter from a twelve year old John F. Kennedy, thanking Miss Swanson for a Christmas present; a signed, self-caricature note from George Gershwin; René Hubert's voluminous, illustrated correspondence; early papers of Herbert K. Somborn's company, Equity Pictures; and a series of mail from Kenneth Anger, which arose from a lawsuit involving his book Hollywood Babylon. There is relatively little correspondence with Joseph P. Kennedy; most of it is found in Series II., Career, and it is generally characterized by business dealings. Also included is a large group of fan mail, and fans' addresses kept on index cards, with carbons of responses, or notations that photographs or letters were sent, or perhaps a phone call was made.

Inventory of the William A. Owens Papers (Part Two)
Title:
Inventory of the William A. Owens Papers (Part Two)
William A. Owens, noted folklorist, author, and educator, was born in Pin Hook, Texas on November 2, 1905, the son of Charles and Jessie Ann (Chenault) Owens. He spent his childhood on the small cotton farms around tiny rural communities of Pin Hook, Novice, Faught, and Blossom. In an effort to finance his education, Owens undertook numerous odd jobs as a farmer's hired hand, stock clerk, and for a short time, combination waiter and dishwasher at Dallas University. In 1924 he entered East Texas State Teachers College in Commerce. Owens earned a high school diploma and elementary teaching certificate. After graduation, however, there were few jobs available in country schools and Owens lacked the qualifications to teach in the larger school systems. After two years teaching in country schools, Owens returned to college. He attended Southern Methodist University where he received the BA degree in 1932 and the MA degree in 1933. In 1941, he received his Ph.D. from the State University of Iowa. With the completion of the Master's degree, Owens began his profession in earnest, compiling an enviable record as an academician with legions of grateful former students. While his career as teacher, lecturer, and administrator has been full, he is more widely known as a gifted author. In addition to numerous articles, reviews and short stories, his books serve as monuments to his craft. His works include Swing and Turn: Texas Play-Party Games (1936); Texas Folk Songs (1950, revised in 1976); Slave Mutiny: The Revolt on the Schooner Amistad (1953); Walking on Borrowed Land (1954); Fever in the Earth (1958); Look to the River (1963); This Stubborn Soil (1966); Three Friends: Bedichek, Dobie, Webb (1969); Tales From the Derrick Floor (with Mody C. Boatright, 1970); A Season of Weathering (1973); and A Fair and Happy Land (1975). Part Two of the Owens Papers is divided into seven categories. These are: Personal correspondence 1940-1980 (Series. 1-3), which also includes some printed reviews of Owens' books; Transcripts of the tapes containing the" Oral History of Texas Oil Pioneers "(Series. 4); Research materials, manuscripts and drafts for unpublished books written by Owens (Series. 5-8); Shorter works by Owens (Series. 9); Works written by other authors (Series. 10), and; Miscellaneous materials and drafts collected by Owens (Series. 11-13). Of special interest in this collection is correspondence concerned with Owens' books, letters from World War II, and the various drafts of books by Owens which have not been published.

Title:
Max Lerner papers 1927-1998
The papers consist of correspondence, speeches, writings, and other papers, (including research and teaching materials, photographs, memorabilia, newspaper and periodical clippings, books, and radio and television tapes) of Max Lerner, an American educator, author, lecturer, historian, and political scientist. The papers focus on Lerner's public life and career with very little material on his personal or family life. The papers document Lerner's close association with Justice Felix Frankfurter and Harold J. Laski, his controversial writings on homosexuality, his work with the Democratic Party during Adlai Stevenson's presidential campaigns, his work on behalf of Jewish causes and Zionism, and his activities during the "red scare" of the 1950s.

Title:
Records of Naval Operating Forces. 1849 - 1997. Secret General Administrative Files, 1942 - 1946
This series consists of reports, memorandums, correspondence, intelligence summaries, maps, charts, photographs, blueprints, and plans regarding administrative functions and various operations on islands in the southern Pacific Ocean during World War II. Topics pertain to the construction of buildings and base facilities in Noumea, New Caledonia, the redeployment of resources, and the establishment and use of airfields in the region. Included are correspondence and memoranda from May-June 1942 between Vice Admiral Robert Ghormley, Rear Admiral John S. McCain, and Captain Daniel J. Callaghan regarding the development of seaplane facilities and land bases in the South Pacific (filing classification N10). There are two memorandums dated May 19, 1945, from James A. Michener summarizing observations and discussions with the historical officer stationed on the Russell Islands. There are also inspection reports by the South Pacific Advanced Base Inspection Board (Byrd Board reports) as well as narratives of the Air Center Command at Espiritu Santo, the naval advanced base on Tulagi (British Solomon Islands), and the facilities on Nukufetau Atoll. The series also contains action reports, war diaries, narratives, and battle experience information bulletins of various World War II campaigns in the Pacific. Events covered by these reports detail supporting operations for the occupation of the Marshall Islands and Eniwetok (Enewetak); supporting operations before and during the occupation of the Gilbert Islands; amphibious operations during the invasion of the Marianas; and Naval operations in the South and Southwest Pacific Ocean areas. Other detailed campaigns are the Battle of Savo Island as described by Rear Admiral E. A. C. Crutchley (Commander Task Group 62.6) and Captain W. G. Greenman (Commanding Officer, USS Astoria); various events of the Solomon Islands campaign such as the torpedoing of the USS Saratoga, USS Wasp, and the USS North Carolina; the seizure of New Georgia (Toenails Operation), the reinforcement of Guadalcanal Island forces by the Seventh Marines (Cactus Two Operation); actions taken by the USS New Orleans, USS Minneapolis, and USS Honolulu; and the loss of the SS President Coolidge and the USS Chevalier. Also part of this series is a set of personal files belonging to Admirals Robert L. Ghormley, William F. Halsey, John H. Newton, John F. Shafroth, Theodore Stark Wilkinson, Oscar C. Badger, Paul Hendren, as well as other World War II United States Naval officers. These files contain either personal correspondence or copies of informal or official letters.

Elisofon, Eliot. Papers, 1930-1988 (bulk, 1942-1973).
Title:
Papers, 1930-1988 (bulk, 1942-1973).
All aspects of Eliot Elisofon's career are documented by photographs, transparencies, slides, negatives, film, research material, notes, photo captions, logbooks, correspondence, agreements and other documents, drafts, proofs, tearsheets, clippings, scrapbooks, catalogs, sketch books, and artifacts, all dating from 1930 to 1988. The archive is organized in ten series: I. Photography Files, 1933-1973, nd; II. Film and Television Projects, 1953-1973, 1986; III. Writings and Lectures, 1938-1973; IV. Artwork, 1935-1969; V. Exhibitions, 1936-1986; VI. Private Art Collection, 1939-1969, nd; VII. Food Files, 1943-1969, nd; VIII. Correspondence, 1930-1973, nd; IX. About Elisofon, 1930-1985; and X. Elin Elisofon, 1976-1988, nd. Series I forms the bulk of the collection, with most of Elisofon's photography assignments for LIFE magazine represented. Elisofon's photographs were first published in LIFE in 1937. He worked for that magazine as an official staff photographer from 1942 to 1964 and then on a contract basis until 1972. Among his subjects were celebrities, politicians, places, art, architecture, food, and a variety of social topics. In addition, Elisofon did freelance work and contributed photographs for Time-Life Books and other publications; many of those photographs, as well as photographs taken for personal reasons, are also included in the archive. Elisofon worked as a still photographer or served in other technical capacities for numerous films, including "Bell, Book and Candle," "Dr. Dolittle," "The Greatest Story Ever Told," "Khartoum," and "Moulin Rouge." He also photographed the filming of "The African Queen." Elisofon was involved in the production of the television documentary series "Black African Heritage" and "Africa." These and other projects are all represented. Drafts of Elisofon's books include those for "Food Is a Four-Letter Word," "Color Photography," "The Nile," "Java Diary," and "Erotic Spirituality." Materials from his frequent lectures and from exhibitions of his photographs, watercolors, and collection of art and sculpture are also present. Elisofon served as a founding trustee of the Museum of African Art, and the collection includes records of his donations and bequests to that museum and others. Recipes and menus gathered by Elisofon comprise Series VII, Food Files. Among noteworthy correspondents in the collection are editors at LIFE, including Maitland Edey, Wilson Hicks, and Edward Thompson; Joseph Campbell, for whose book "The Art of Indian Asia" Elisofon provided photographs; Warren Robbins of the Museuem of African Art; and Lee Talbot of the Smithsonian. Elisofon's daughter Elin's files on her father's work and life make up the final series.

Guide to Betty Jo Wilkinson “Eat at Angell’s” Manuscript 2009 2009
This collection consists of a copy of “Eat at Angell’s” by Betty Jo Wilkinson, the granddaughter of Nellie Stillwell Angell. Jeanne Gooden Burkhardt and her husband Ross M. Burkhardt assisted Betty Jo Wilkinson in writing the manuscript. “Eat at Angell’s” is a biographical and historical account of the life of Nellie Angell and her family. Wilkinson provides much detail on life and work at Angell’s Tea Room (1928-1951), a popular restaurant in Greeley, Colorado. The restaurant became famous due to the Angell Club holding its meetings there. The world-famous author, James A. Michener, was a member of the club.

Max Lerner papers, 1927-1992 (inclusive).
The papers consist of correspondence, speeches, writings, and other papers (including research and teaching materials, photographs, memorabilia, newspaper and periodical clippings, books, and radio and television tapes) of Max Lerner, an American educator, author, lecturer, historian, and political scientist.
