This series consists of reports, memorandums, correspondence, intelligence summaries, maps, charts, photographs, blueprints, and plans regarding administrative functions and various operations on islands in the southern Pacific Ocean during World War II. Topics pertain to the construction of buildings and base facilities in Noumea, New Caledonia, the redeployment of resources, and the establishment and use of airfields in the region. Included are correspondence and memoranda from May-June 1942 between Vice Admiral Robert Ghormley, Rear Admiral John S. McCain, and Captain Daniel J. Callaghan regarding the development of seaplane facilities and land bases in the South Pacific (filing classification N10). There are two memorandums dated May 19, 1945, from James A. Michener summarizing observations and discussions with the historical officer stationed on the Russell Islands. There are also inspection reports by the South Pacific Advanced Base Inspection Board (Byrd Board reports) as well as narratives of the Air Center Command at Espiritu Santo, the naval advanced base on Tulagi (British Solomon Islands), and the facilities on Nukufetau Atoll. The series also contains action reports, war diaries, narratives, and battle experience information bulletins of various World War II campaigns in the Pacific. Events covered by these reports detail supporting operations for the occupation of the Marshall Islands and Eniwetok (Enewetak); supporting operations before and during the occupation of the Gilbert Islands; amphibious operations during the invasion of the Marianas; and Naval operations in the South and Southwest Pacific Ocean areas. Other detailed campaigns are the Battle of Savo Island as described by Rear Admiral E. A. C. Crutchley (Commander Task Group 62.6) and Captain W. G. Greenman (Commanding Officer, USS Astoria); various events of the Solomon Islands campaign such as the torpedoing of the USS Saratoga, USS Wasp, and the USS North Carolina; the seizure of New Georgia (Toenails Operation), the reinforcement of Guadalcanal Island forces by the Seventh Marines (Cactus Two Operation); actions taken by the USS New Orleans, USS Minneapolis, and USS Honolulu; and the loss of the SS President Coolidge and the USS Chevalier. Also part of this series is a set of personal files belonging to Admirals Robert L. Ghormley, William F. Halsey, John H. Newton, John F. Shafroth, Theodore Stark Wilkinson, Oscar C. Badger, Paul Hendren, as well as other World War II United States Naval officers. These files contain either personal correspondence or copies of informal or official letters.
