Title: Albert J. Pickett papers, 1779-1904

The Albert J. Pickett Papers form approximately one-half of the Pickett Family Papers, LPR185. The History of Alabama series is the largest series within the Albert J. Pickett Papers, and it contains letters and manuscripts Pickett received from numerous prominent individuals in the course of writing his book. Some people sent Pickett their reminiscences of major events, while a few sent Pickett documents from the late 1700s and early 1800s. The Creek Indian War of 1813-1814 is particularly well-documented. Many of the letters advised Pickett of potential sources of information. Most of the letters and manuscripts were bound together in two volumes by Pickett. This series also includes drafts of the book. The correspondence series contains letters from Pickett to family members, chiefly his wife. Several of the letters were written in 1851 when he travelled to New York and Charleston to arrange the publication of the History of Alabama. The scrapbook, clippings, and speeches series contains a scrapbook assembled by Pickett of articles he wrote and articles about his History of Alabama. Most of the clippings and speeches not in his scrapbook are transcriptions.

Title: Collection of records concerning the financial controversy between Mississippi and Alabama Territories and States, 1816-1830.

This collection of records consists of correspondence and financial statements which concern the financial controversy of the Miss. Territory and the State of Miss. with the Ala. Territory and the State of Ala. There was difficulty in the settlement of the funds of the treasury of Miss. upon the formation of the Ala. Territory out of the eastern section of the Miss. Territory. The first part of this collection consists of instructions for the surveying of public lands in the Ala. Territory, with descriptions of townships and range boundaries. The bulk of this collections consists of correspondence files of the Miss. and Ala. Executive Departments: the Miss. Governors include David Holmes and George Poindexter; the Ala. Governors include William Wyatt Bibb, Thomas Bibb, Israel Pickens, and John Murphy. Also included are financial statements pertaining to the balancing of the accounts of the Treasury from the Miss. Auditor of Public Accounts and a memorial from the Legislature of the State of Miss. to the U.S. Congress concerning the extension of the Miss. boundary line into Chickasaw Indian land.

This series consists of correspondence and financial records of Gov. Thomas Bibb, 1820 July - Nov. Included are letters from citizens concerning the militia, local politics and elections. Also includes copies of documents relating to river navigation. Of particular interest are several documents, 1820 Oct. 24 and Nov. 28, concerning a loan made by the Planters' and Merchants' Bank of Huntsville to the State of Ala. and a promissory note, 1821 Sept. 7, in which Bibb agrees to pay $10,000 to the Planters and Merchants Bank of Huntsville. Also included are several promissory notes from Monroe and Greene counties which had been paid off, 1821, and a list of persons in Greene County who had not paid off their notes as of 1821 Jan. 1.

Title: Appointments files, 1820-1821.

This series contains correspondence relating to appointments, commissions and resignations. A large portion of the correspondence, which is dated 1820 Sept. - Dec., consists of resignations from judges of various county courts in the state. Also included is a letter of resignation from Senator William Metcalf, a letter concerning a vacancy which has occurred in Clarke Co. due to the refusal of the appointed judges to qualify for the posts, and general letters of resignation from various state and local officials, 1821. Some items are addressed to the General Assembly, but were forwarded to the Governor for his action.

Title: Messages to the General Assembly, 1820-1821.

This series consists of the handwritten messages of Thomas Bibb delivered to the Ala. General Assembly on 1820 Nov. 9, 1820 Nov. 22 and 20 Nov. 1821. The first message discusses the late governor William Wyatt Bibb, the new state capital at Cahaba, the state militia, the appointment of a river examiner, the settlement of accounts between Ala. and Miss. concerning Miss. Territory finances, a loan secured by the state with the Planters' and Merchants' Bank (Huntsville, Ala.), and census returns. The Nov. 22 message discusses the sale of lots in the town of Cahaba and resignations of public officials. The 1821 letter concerns the Tennessee and Cahaba Rivers Examiner.
