Major General Earl Van Dorn was a Confederate general, originally from Mississippi. He was born near Port Gibson (Miss.) on Sept. 17, 1820. After graduating from West Point (N. Y. ) in 1842, he began a long career in the army. He was recognized for gallant and meritorious service during the Mexican War in 1848. He also served in the Seminole Indian War and in the West. When he resigned his U.S. Army commission, he was a major in the famous 2nd Cavalry Regiment. He was commissioned a colonel of cavalry in Confederate service and soon earned fame by capturing the "Star of the West" steamer in Galveston (Tex.) in April 1861. He was quickly promoted to brigadier and then major general in late 1861. After defeats at Pea Ridge (Ark.) and Corinth (Miss.) he was replaced by General John C. Pemberton. After becoming Pemberton's chief of cavalry, Van Dorn led a highly successful raid on U.S. General Grant's supply depot in Holly Springs (Miss.) in Dec. 1862. This disrupted Grant's operations against Vicksburg (Miss.) and helped Van Dorn redeem his reputation. On May 7, 1863, he was murdered at his headquarters in Spring Hill (Tenn.) by Dr. George Peters, a local physician. He was buried in Mobile (Ala.) initially, but his body was reinterred to Port Gibson (Miss.).

Century Company records
Title:
Century Company records
The Century Company published the Century Illustrated Monthly Magazine, which was widely regarded as the best general periodical of its time, performing a role as cultural arbiter during the 1880s and 1890s. It was founded in New York City in 1881 and also published the children's magazine St. Nicholas, dictionaries, and books. The Century Company records date from 1870 to the 1930s and chiefly contain correspondence with contributors, readers, public figures, and literary agents. A number of manuscripts and proofs in the collection are extensively edited and taken with annotations on letters provide a detailed record of the outlook, standards, and functions of the company.

Title:
Elm Springs August 1967 [graphic] / Ernie Deane [photographer]. 1967.
Negative of a Civil War marker at Elm Springs, Washington County, Arkansas. It commemorates the place where Confederate General Earl Van Dorn's army spent the night before marching towards the battle at Bentonville, Benton County, Arkansas. The marker reads, "Pea Ridge Memorial Association. Elm Springs. A half block west across the street is the big spring that gave the town its name. Tents of the 16th Arkansas Infantry covered the campus of the academy to the east near the head of Brush Creek during the winter of 1861-1862. Dr. M.D. Steele's log-house was headquarters. James H. Berry, later governor of Arkansas, was a lieutenant with this regiment. Here March 5, 1862, just before the battle of Pea Ridge, Gen. Van Dorn's army spent the night. Early morning found them hurrying toward Bentonville. 1862 Centennial Observance 1962."
