The William Appleton collection consists of letters, handwritten manuscripts, "penny plains" and "two-pence coloured" materials, which were small portraits of actors created for the toy theater trade, a once-popular form of home entertainment. The collection encompasses the late 17th century up through the mid-20th century, although the bulk of the material falls between the mid-18th century and the mid-19th century. The oldest item is a letter from actress Elizabeth Barry to a Lady Lisbourn, dated October 25, 1697. The latest item is a letter from playwright George Bernard Shaw to a J. T. Grien, dated November 28, 1930. The collection contains many letters from prominent theatrical figures, primarily of the English stage, including Ira Aldridge, Dion Boucicault, Edward Gordon Craig, David Garrick, Sir Henry Irving, Edmund Kean, William Charles Macready, Bernard Shaw, Sarah Siddons, Dame Ellen Terry, and others. Also included are black and white portraits known as "penny plains," and color portraits known as "two-pence coloured," depicting actors and actresses of the day in their best known roles. These images were intended for home use in puppet theater-type settings, and most date from the early to mid-1800s, though some date as far back as 1799.

Correspondents: [Alexander?] Chalmers, [Archibald?] Hamilton, J[ames?] Heath, Joseph Munden, [James?] Northcote, John Robinson, [R.B.Sheridan, Mrs. Siddons], [Tate] Wilkinson, Francis Wrangham. In writing to Mrs. Siddons in 1801, Mrs. Inchbald conveys the high opinion of she and Mr. Harris of Covent Garden have of the performance by her son Harry (9). In her first letter to Wilkinson, [1780], (10), she announces her intention of leaving his company; in her second, [1780?], (11), she mentions some additional lines written by [Thomas] Hull for "A new way to pay old debts" by [P. Massinger] and refers to her negotiations with Mr. Harris. On the back of (11) is a list of names in Wilkinson's hand. In addition, includes a letter to [William] Savage, Shrove, Tuesday [1807?].

Correspondents: Joseph Austin, David Garrick, Samuel Ireland, Richard Peake, treasurer of Drury Lane, and Tate Wilkinson. Letter (1) to Austin mentions Munden as a "favourite with the Public;" he has received a hint about his "mending Shakespeare a little in the character of Dogberry." It also discusses Mrs. Siddon's refusal to perform at Drury Lane until she receives the sum due her or security. (1b) is J.P. Collier's copy of this letter. (2) to Garrick suggests Parsons for the role of Snip in "Harlequin's Invasion." (3) to Ireland arranges a meeting to discuss Ireland's piece which King has still to read. (4) to Peake discusses the money owed him for performances at Drury Lane under the management of Sheridan. In (7) he threatens to post the record of payments owed him by Sheridan publicly. (8) to Wilkinson explains how he dresses to play the gravedigger in Hamlet.
