Joseph Lindon Smith (1863-1950) is a painter and lecturer, Dublin, N.H.
American painter.
Painter, lecturer, Dublin, N.H. Born 1863. Died 1950.
Born in Pawtucket, R.I., Smith studied art at the Art School of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts from 1880-1882 and at the Academie Julian under Boulanger and Lefebvre from 1883-1885. He established a studio in Boston, where his work attracted the attention of art educator Denman Ross of Harvard University, and in the early 1890s Ross and Smith traveled extensively and studied ancient civilizations of Mexico, China, and Southeast Asia. In 1892, during a trip to Italy, Smith met collector Isabella Stuart Gardner, and began to copy paintings for her and act as an occasional agent in purchasing artwork. After Smith's first trip to Egypt in 1898, Smith devoted himself to painting copies of tomb sculpture and murals for educational uses in museums and other institutions. He was a member of the Joint Expedition of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and Harvard University from 1910-1939, headed by George A. Reisner.
Smith was also known as a lecturer and a producer of elaborate pageants staged as charitable fund-raising events. Smith's wife, Corinna Haven Putnam Smith, a writer and lecturer, accompanied him on many journeys to Egypt and Asia.
Joseph Lindon Smith (1863-1950) of Boston, Massachusetts and Dublin, New Hampshire, was a painter primarily known for his ability to meticulously depict the murals and tomb sculpture of Egypt and other ancient cultures.
Joseph Lindon Smith was born on October 11, 1863 in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, the son of wholesale lumberman Henry Francis Smith and Emma Greenleaf Smith, a cousin of John Greenleaf Whittier.
From 1880 to 1882, Smith studied drawing and painting at the Art School of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts under Frederic Crowninshield and Otto Grundman. Accompanied by his friend, Frank Benson, he attended the Académie Julian and studied under William Bouguereau, Gustave Boulanger, and Jules Lefebvre from 1883 to 1885.
Upon his return to Boston, Smith established a studio as a portrait and landscape painter, attracting the attention of Denman Ross, a professor of History of Fine Arts at Harvard University. In the early 1890s Smith and Ross began to travel extensively and Smith became interested in ancient civilizations of Mexico, China, and Southeast Asia. In 1892, during a trip to Italy, Smith befriended Isabella Stewart Gardner, for whom he copied famous paintings, and occasionally acted as agent in purchasing art work.
Making his first trip to Egypt in 1898, Smith became enthralled with the art work of the ancient civilization and devoted himself to painting copies of the tomb sculptures and murals for educational uses in museums and other public institutions. In 1899, he married Corinna Haven Putnam and the couple spent much of their married life traveling between the United States and the Middle East, especially Egypt. From 1910 to 1939, Smith was a member of the Joint Expedition of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and Harvard University directed by Dr. George A. Reisner.
For fifty years, Smith was also sought out as a writer and producer of plays and theatrical pageants, fetes, and masques primarily staged for various charitable fund-raising events.
Joseph Lindon Smith died on October 18, 1950 in Dublin, New Hampshire.

Charles Eliot Norton papers
Title:
Charles Eliot Norton papers
This archive contains letters addressed to Charles Eliot Norton from about 1845 to1908. Norton was a Harvard graduate (A.B. 1846) and professor of the History of Fine Arts at Harvard from 1874 to 1898, with a special interest in the study and translation of Dante. Many of the letters in this collection deal with art and with Dante. In addition he knew a great many prominent figures in both England and the United States, especially those in the political field and the literary and artistics fields. His correspondence with these people often touches upon their public and their private lives. From 1863 to 1868 Norton was joint editor with his friend James Russell Lowell of the North American review. The letters addressed to him as editor are marked in this index by a star (*) and the folders containing them are stamped with a red N.A.R.(=North American Review). In 1898 Norton's opposition to the Spanish-American war led Senator George F. Hoar to criticize him. A list of some of the letters Norton received commenting on this controversy is at the end of this index. Referenced throughout the finding aid is the Excavations at Delphi (scrapbook folder) with a folder designation, such as f.1, f.2, and so on. All folders can be found at item number 5308.

Sullivan, T. R. (Thomas Russell), 1849-1916. Papers, 1856-1916.
Title:
Papers, 1856-1916.
The first box of this collection contains Sullivan's correspondence, arranged in alphabetical order by writer. Most of the letters are from his personal friends and authors and actors with whom he became acquainted during the course of his literary career. The majority of the letters date from the 1880s to 1915. Correspondents include Richard Mansfield, whose letters pertain to the plays Sullivan was writing for him; Meredith Nicholson (1866-1947), author, with copies of his poetry; John Boyle O'Reilly (1844-1890), poet and editor; Edward Robinson (1858-1931), administrator of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and director of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, with most of his letters describing activities at both museums; Joseph Linden Smith (1863-1950), painter, with some quick sketches illustrating his letters; Robert Louis Balfour Stevenson (1850-1894), Scottish author; Charles Warren Stoddard (1843-1909), author; and Barrett Wendell (1855-1921), author and Harvard professor. There are a few drafts of responses by Sullivan scattered throughout the correspondence and filed under "S." Box 2 contains letters, written in Italian, by Tommaso Salvini (1829-1916), the Italian tragedian. All the letters were addressed to Sullivan and they date from 1881 to 1915. Sullivan translated the letters into English and the typescript of the translation is filed in the box. Not all the letters appear to have been translated and some of them were abridged in the process of translation. Salvini's letters discuss his work as an actor, his life in Florence, political developments in Italy, his family, and the world of theater in Europe and the United States. There are drafts of a few responses from Sullivan to Salvini (written in Italian). Box 2 also contains a typescript essay by Sullivan entitled "My First Acquaintance with Salvini." Boxes 3 and 4 include essays, notes, literary manuscripts, and printed copies of Sullivan's works. All are unbound. They are arranged in alphabetical order by title. Box 5 contains four notebooks kept by Sullivan which include poetry, newsclippings, photographs, and various literary jottings. The box also contains his handwritten manuscript of the novel The Heart of Us and two bound copies of other of his manuscripts. Much of Sullivan's writing was based on his travels in Europe.
