Adam, Adolphe, 1803-1856. Le chalet [collection] : operetta in one act / libretto by Scribe and Mélesville ; music by Ad. Adam.
Title:
Le chalet [collection] : operetta in one act / libretto by Scribe and Mélesville ; music by Ad. Adam. [18--]
Arranged in five groups: I. Vocal scores (6). II. Chorus parts (9). III. Librettos (6). IV. Promptbooks (7). V. Dialogue parts (11). Adam's one-act comic operetta, originally titled "Le chalet," is known variously as "The Swiss cottage, " "My brother's return, or Caught, not won, " "La ruse du Soldat, " "The Swiss chalet, or Why don't she marry" (Thomas Haynes Bayly's English adaptation) or "The recruit" (Oscar Weil's version). Three of the vocal scores, in French, were published by Lemoine (Paris) and represent two editions, dating from 183-? and 188-? The remaining three are in English and are handwritten and undated: one is Oscar Weil's abridged version, one bears the stamp of T. Goodwin, New York, and the last bears the signature of Edw. Seguin, the latter possibly his own arrangement and probably in his hand. The manuscript chorus parts (SSTTB), in English, each bear the name of Edwd. Seguin on the cover and are probably in his hand; there are two 1st soprano parts, one 2nd soprano part, two 1st tenor parts, two 2nd tenor parts, and two bass parts. The published librettos include three French editions (Paris: Tresse, 1842 & 1875; Lévy, 1892) and two copies of Bayly's English adaptation (New York: S. French, n.d.). The promptbooks, all in English, include four identical typed copies in Tams folders and three manuscript editions, one for Weil's "Recruit," one for Bayly's English adaptation (bearing Ann Seguin's name on the cover), and the last of which identifies Ed. Seguin as translator and adaptor, lists the "original cast, Phila." (and also bears Anne Seguin's name on the cover). The typed dialogue parts, in English, occur as four incomplete sets.
