Collection comprises comprehensive documentation of the Belgian surrealist's career as gallery director, editor, publisher, musician, poet and artist. Most significant are ca. 3500 letters (1918-1971) to and from artists, musicians, writers, dealers, and others prominent in the art world in Europe and some in the U.S. Most of the correspondence is organized chronologically, and includes letters to and from Enrico Baj, André Breton, Jacques Brunius, Jan Cockx, Paul Eluard, Robert Giron, Paul-Gustave van Hecke, Wifredo Lam, Marcel Leconte, Marcel Mariën, Paul Neuhuys, Paul Nougé, Roland Penrose, Benjamin Péret, Arthur Petronio, Herbert Read, André de Ridder, Charley Troop, Tristan Tzara, among others. Artwork that Mesens handled or considered for exhibitions is documented in ca. 800 photographs. Four and a half linear ft. of files relate to the International Surrealist Exhibition in London in 1936, the beginnings of the Institute of Contemporary Arts (I.C.A.) in London, the London Gallery, other exhibitions, and unpublished manuscripts sent to Mesens for the London Bulletin. Other art business papers include art sales receipt books (1931-1936); press clippings and rare surrealist periodicals (Styx, NEON) and brochures; ca. 200 exhibition announcements (1920-1976); and journal articles by and about Mesens. Mesens' address book from the 1920s contains nearly 1,000 names. Thirteen copper or zinc plates of various artists' graphic work may have been used to create exhibition announcements.

The collection consists of early letters of Magritte (many illustrated) on artistic matters, draft writings for published essays, a detailed late inventory of his works, and letters from Paul Eluard and from Luc Etienne (for the College de Pataphysique in Paris). The papers were acquired from the widow's estate sale of 1987, and other assorted sources.

Collection of corrrespondence, manuscripts, printed materials, artwork, and photographs relating to "Le surréalisme révolutionnaire" movement of the late 1940s. The collection includes original letters, meeting minutes, tracts, lectures, drawings, and financial and other records from the collections of Noël Arnaud and Marcel Mariën documenting the efforts of artists and writers in Belgium, France, Denmark, and Czechoslovakia to reinvigorate the Surrealism movement started in the 1920s. The bulk of the material in the collection represents work by individuals affiliated with the Groupe surréaliste-révolutionnaire de Belgique and Groupe surréaliste-révolutionnaire en France, including Yves Battistini, Paul Bourgoignie, Christian Dotremont, Edouard Jaguer, Asger Jorn, René Magritte, René Passeron, and others. Printed materials include posters, clippings, and issues of the journals Les deux soeur, founded by Dotremont, and Le surrealisme révolutionnaire, published by the Bureau international du surréalisme révolutionnaire. There are also original drawings by Noël Arnaud and black-and-white photographs by Marc Vaux and Studio Yves Hervochon of artwork by Francis Bott, Jacques Doucet, Henri Goetz, Josef Istler, and Pierre Soulages.

Debord, Guy, 1931-1994. Letters sent and photographs, 1954-1963.

Eighty-four letters and cards written by Guy Debord and his wife Michele Bernstein to Marcel Mariën, dating from 1954 to 1963. Most of the letters relate to the publication of articles in Mariën's journal Les Lèvres nues. Debord sends editorial suggestions, submits articles, updates Mariën on bookstore inventories and sales, and discusses his own journal Potlatch. Debord peppers his letters with comments and rumors regarding artistic and political subjects, including Breton and the surrealists, the boycott of the 1956 avant-garde show in Marseille and Stalin's rise to power. Mariën and Debord's close relationship terminated in 1957, the year Debord formed the Internationale Situationniste group.

A group of twenty-one letters and one postcard to Gilbert Senecaut, together with one typescript, five photographs, and one handwritten sheet, recto and verso. The correspondents include Braulio Arenas, Jorge Cáceres, Enrique Gómez-Correa, Ermilo Abreu Gómez, and Naïm Kattan. In addition, one letter to René Magritte from Enrique Gómez-Correa, one letter to Marcel Mariën from Braulio Arenas, and one empty envelope. The collection relates to the Belgian Surrealist movement and its close ties with Surrealist movements in Latin America.
