Gómez-Correa was a poet, essayist and editor who earned a living as a lawyer and diplomat. A central figure in the South American surrealist movement, he founded the Mandrágora group in Chile in 1937, and soon thereafter, a journal by the same name. He lived in Paris for three years in the 1940s, where he became acquainted with Magritte and Breton. He wrote more than twenty books, including poetry, essays and drama.
