Knowlton discusses her personal, academic and professional background, and provides a basic history of the Women's Liberation Movement as an outcropping of socialism and feminism. She describes her involvement in a number of organizations including "Group 27," which started a day center called "Community School for People Under Six" and ALFA (Atlanta Lesbian Feminist Alliance). The central issues contained in her oral history concern reproductive control, freedom from sexual abuse, daycare and sexuality. She also discusses the conflicts within the Women's Movement over the Equal Rights Amendment.

Kurtz describes her childhood in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and her experiences at Brandeis University and at the University of Pittsburgh. After moving to Atlanta in 1978, she become involved in the ERA Georgia campaign and not long after, she became a founding member of the Georgia Women's Political Caucus. She discusses the conflict over how to proceed with the ERA, and she describes her own state-wide efforts to educate women on lobbying strategies, and to raise money. She also discusses her work on the national level, as the Georgia Chair of the Women's Political Caucus and Vice-Chair of the National Women's Political Caucus. A recipient of a Kellogg Foundation grant, she describes her opportunities to travel and create connections and communities of women around the world.

A native of Texas, Sarah Weddington was the youngest women to successfully argue a case in the Supreme Court, and her oral history provides a unique insight into that historic case, Roe v Wade. Weddington begins by describing her education, and her decision to study law. Weddington discusses her growing awareness of the need for reproductive rights information, resources, and access. She goes on to describe the background of the case Roe v Wade, and her dealings with Margie Pitts Hames, who argued the Georgia case Doe v Bolton. She also talks about the day of the hearing, and the "majesty of the moment." From 1978 to 1981, Weddington worked for the Carter administration, and she discusses the appointments and opportunities he provided for women during his administration. Weddington ends by warning that, depending on Supreme Court appointments, Roe v Wade could be overturned, and that we should be wary of complacency regarding the issue of reproductive rights.

These papers document Fowlkes' 25-year career as a professor of Political Science and Women's Studies at Georgia State University, including her promotions, her teaching activities, and her committee work. The collection highlights particularly her instrumental role in the development of the Women's Studies programs at the university, tracing the progression from the Women's Studies Group in 1974 to the founding of the Women's Studies Institute in 1994. The papers also provide significant information on Fowlkes' wide-ranging professional activities, her grants and awards, and her service to associations, especially the American Political Science Association and the National Women's Studies Association. Materials relating to Fowlkes' articles, papers, and books, particularly the research and drafts for her book, "White Political Women: Paths from Privilege to Empowerment" (1992), are well represented. Also included are photographs, audio and videotapes, artifacts, and a small amount of biographical material documenting Fowlkes' life prior to her career at Georgia State.
