Barbara McClintock was a maize geneticist who discovered "crossing over" and translocation or "jumping genes." She received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1983.
Barbara McClintock, a maize geneticist, was born in Hartford, Connecticut on 16 June 1902. In 1908 her family moved to Brooklyn, New York, where her interest in science began at Erasmus Hall High School. When she finished high school in 1919, McClintock enrolled, despite her parents' opposition, at Cornell University's College of Agriculture. Since the College would not allow women to major in plant breeding, McClintock majored in botany. At the end of her junior year, after having taken a genetics course, she was invited to take the graduate course in genetics and was unofficially made a graduate student. She received her B.A. in 1923, at which time approximately 25% of the graduates from the College of Agriculture were women. She went on to receive her Ph.D. in botany in 1927; her thesis advisor was Lester Sharp, a cytology professor in the Botany Department.
McClintock remained at Cornell doing research for another four years. Then, receiving a fellowship from the National Research Council, she studied and taught at the University of Missouri, California Institute of Technology, and Cornell University between 1931 and 1933. Cornell remained her home base, even though the University did not offer her a job. (The first woman assistant professor at Cornell in a field other than home economics was not appointed until 1947.) In 1933, McClintock received a Guggenheim Fellowship to study in Germany but returned within the year due to the depressed, troubled conditions in Germany. (The geneticist Curt Stern, with whom she had been planning to study, had already left the country.)
McClintock again did research at Cornell until 1936, working in Rollins Emerson's laboratory supported by the Rockefeller Foundation. That year, she moved to the University of Missouri at Columbia, where she was Assistant Professor of Botany until 1940. At that time, not having been offered an incentive to stay, she went to Cold Spring Harbor with Marcus Rhoades where she studied maize until the following November. In December 1941, when Milislav Demerec became Director of the Department of Genetics of the Carnegie Institution of Washington at Cold Spring Harbor, he offered her a one-year position, which was later made permanent. She remained Staff Member at the Carnegie Institution until 1967, when she became Distinguished Service Member.
During her tenure at the Carnegie Institution McClintock was also Consultant (from 1962 to 1969) to the Agricultural Science Program of the Rockefeller Foundation, which funded research in maize in South America. Much of this work involved discussing research results with, among others, Takeo A. Kato Yamakake and Almiro Blumenschein, with whom she later wrote a book, Chromosome Constitution of Races of Maize.
McClintock traced genes through the changes in the colored kernels of maize. In the 1930s she discovered "crossing over," in which chromosomes break and recombine to create genetic changes. In the 1950s, she discovered the occurrence of transposable genetic elements and their effect on gene expression; that is, that genes are not fixed like pearls on a string but that they move or "jump" around. She found the first jumping gene on the short arm of chromosome 9. Because the gene broke the chromosome into two parts, she called the gene "DS" or dissociation element. She called the jumping genes "control elements" because they inactivated neighboring genes on the chromosome. The element, which causes the gene to jump, she called "AC" or activator element.
McClintock's findings were ignored, partly because the complex development patterns of maize were not as clear to everyone else (especially non-maize geneticists) as they were to her. In the 1970s, molecular biologists isolated transposable elements in bacteria and discovered that they were used by cells to control genes, revealing the same discovery that McClintock had made twenty years earlier in maize.
In time, McClintock's work was appreciated and lauded. She received many awards for her research in maize, including an Award of Merit from the Botanical Society of America (1957), the Kimber Genetics Award from the National Academy of Science (1967), the National Medal of Science (1970), the Louis and Bert Freedman Foundation Award for Research in Biochemistry (1978), the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation Prize (1978), the Lewis S. Rosenstiel Award (1978), the Albert Lasker Basic Medical Research Award (1981), the Wolf Foundation Award (1981), the Louisa Gross Horwitz Prize (1982), the Charles Leopold Mayer Prize (1982), and the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine (1983). McClintock was the first woman to win an unshared Nobel Prize in that category and the third woman to win an unshared Nobel Prize in science.
McClintock also received numerous honorary degrees, including those from Georgetown University, Harvard University, University of Cambridge, and Yale University. She was a member of various societies, including the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Institute of Biological Sciences, the American Philosophical Society, the American Society of Naturalists, the Botanical Society of America, the Genetics Society of America (by which she was elected Vice President in 1939 and the first woman President in 1945), the National Academy of Sciences (she was the third woman ever elected), the National Women's Hall of Fame, the New York Academy of Sciences, and the Royal Society of London.
Barbara McClintock died on 2 September 1992 at age ninety.

Barbara McClintock; born Eleanor McClintock, Hartford, Connecticut, June 16, 1902 – died September 2, 1992, Huntington, New York; American scientist and cytogeneticist who was awarded the 1983 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. McClintock received her PhD in botany from Cornell University in 1927. There she started her career as the leader in the development of maize cytogenetics, the focus of her research for the rest of her life. From the late 1920s, McClintock studied chromosomes and how they change during reproduction in maize. She developed the technique for visualizing Maize chromosomes and used microscopic analysis to demonstrate many fundamental genetic ideas. One of those ideas was the notion of genetic recombination by crossing-over during meiosis—a mechanism by which chromosomes exchange information. She produced the first genetic map for maize, linking regions of the chromosome to physical traits. She demonstrated the role of the telomere and centromere, regions of the chromosome that are important in the conservation of genetic information. She was recognized as among the best in the field, awarded prestigious fellowships, and elected a member of the National Academy of Sciences in 1944 ...

McClintock, Barbara, 1902-1992. Papers, 1927-1991.
Title:
Papers, 1927-1991.
Series I (3.25 linear ft.) contains correspondence with geneticists, maize geneticists, chemists, students, and some publishers. The bulk of this series covers the 1960s to the 1990s. The major correspondents include George Wells Beadle, Almiro Blumenschein, Royal Alexander Brink, William L. Brown, Charles R. Burnham, Melvin M. Green, Takeo Angel Kato Yamakake, Joshua Lederberg, Oliver Evans Nelson, Jr., Peter Andrew Peterson, Marcus M. Rhoades, James A. Shapiro, and Lester W. Sharp. Series II (1 linear ft.) contains programs, brochures, award certificates, newspaper and magazine clippings, reports, and meeting minutes. Subjects include the National Medal of Science, the Wolf Foundation Prize, and the Nobel Prize. Series III (5 linear ft.) contains McClintock's outlines, research, and drafts for articles, books, and lectures. The majority of this series is comprised of lectures. Series IV (4.5 linear ft.) contains articles, notes, reports, and papers written by colleagues and students of McClintock. The series is arranged alphabetically by author and then by title. Also included are notes that McClintock took about works by others. Series V (55 linear ft.) contains loose notes, notebooks, card files, and numerous photographs and lantern slides of maize. There is no folder listing for this series. Because this series documents specific experiments with maize in great technical detail, the folders have been left in the original order in which they were boxed from McClintock's laboratory file cabinets at Cold Spring Harbor. The boxes have been labeled with the cabinet number and drawer number of the file cabinets in McClintock's laboratory. The notebooks are interspersed with the loose notes in the order in which McClintock arranged them. The card files are mainly culture cards for maize samples which McClintock studied at Cold Spring Harbor. Many of the prints and slides are probably photographs of these maize samples. Series VI (1.5 linear ft.) contains prints and negatives. Some of the prints are illustrations from articles about maize genetics and others are prints of McClintock herself.

L. C. Dunn Papers, ca. 1920-1974
Title:
L. C. Dunn Papers ca. 1920-1974
L.C. Dunn was one of the most significant figures in the emerging field of developmental genetics in the 20th century. His T-locus work with the mouse established a number of important genetic principles, including ideas of gene interaction, the distribution of alleles in wild populations, and the factors that influence fertility. He wrote an important textbook of genetics, (1925), in collaboration with Sinnott (and later Dobzhansky); other significant books authored or co-authored by him include (1946), and (1965). He worked in poultry genetics for eight years at the Agricultural Experiment Station in Storrs, CT, from 1920-1928. The remainder of his career was spent at Columbia University, where he worked with rats, mice, and fruit flies, and proved himself to be an inspiring teacher as well. His interest in international scientific collaboration led him to establish ties to Soviet scientists, and to help relocate refugee scientists during World War II. He remained active in his profession to the end of his life. This collection includes correspondence, reports, notebooks, lectures, and photographs. It is a rich collection, documenting the development of American genetics as well as Dunn's interests in humanitarian efforts and international affairs. There is significant material relating to American-U.S.S.R. contacts, particularly in the files on the American-Soviet Friendship Council and the American-Soviet Science Society. There is much, as well, on the impact of the Lysenko controversy in the U. S. Dunn's inerestt in European scientists can also be seen in the sizable amount of material on the Emergency Committee in Aid of Displaced German Scholars. Material relating to the Kilgore and Magnusson bills for the support of science (predecessors to the NSF) are also in the collection. Of note are data on the following: National Research Council Committee on Experimental Animals and Plants; research on the population study of the Jewish community in Rome; and Columbia University. There is much in the correspondence concerning Drosophila, poultry genetics, and other such topics; Walter Landauer is Dunn's major correspondent. Title:
Erwin Chargaff Papers 1929-1992
A biochemist at Columbia University, Erwin Chargaff discovered the base-pairing regularities or "complementarity relationships" of nucleic acids that provided one of the key steps in developing a structural model for DNA. During his long career, Chargaff is credited with conclusively falsifying the tetranucleotide hypothesis; demonstrating the existence of a large number of DNA species; and creating the first descriptions of hypochromicity, hyperchromicity, and the denaturation of a DNA. In addition, Chargaff conducted important research on blood coagulation, lipids and lipoproteins, the metabolism of amino acids and inositol, and the biosynthesis of phosphotransferases. He retired to emeritus status in 1974 and remained active in research almost to the time of his death in June 2002. The Chargaff Papers are organized into ten series: I. Correspondence, 1931-1992; Ia. Correspondence, 1949-2002; IIa. Grants, 1930-1982; IIb. Subject Files, 1940-1984; IIc. Subject Files, 1946-2002; III. Works by Chargaff, 1929-1989; IIIa. Title:
Curt Stern Papers 1907-1981
The Papers of Curt Stern include extensive correspondence, lectures (1920s-1970s, 1.5 boxes), autobiographical material, articles, zoological course notes, photographs, etc. Stern's various areas of scientific interest are documented in the collection: the chromosome theory of heredity, role of gene mutation and chromosome rearrangements in evolution, action and interaction of genes during individual development, and particularly his contribution to the development of human genetics as a discipline (centered on his popular and influential book, 1949, 1960, 1973). Both his career in Germany and the United States is documented in his correspondence. After studying with T. H. Morgan at Columbia University on a Rockefeller Foundation Fellowship (1924-1926), Stern returned to Richard Goldschmidt's lab at the Kaiser-Wilhelm Institute (1926-1932). There is material of note in the collection concerning this period when Stern helped to establish the cytological basis of crossing over. After a short stay at the California Institute of Technology in 1932, Stern's temporary residence in the U. S. became permanent, and his later career at the University of Rochester, 1933-1947 (Chairman, Department of Zoology) and at the University of California, Berkeley, 1947-1970 (there is abundant material on the Department of Zoology) is covered in the collection. There is other material on: American Association for the Advancement of Science Inter-Society Committee on Science Foundation Legislation, 1946-1947; American Society of Human Genetics (Pres., 1957); Atomic Energy Commission (Advisory Committee for Biology and Medicine, 1950-1955); Genetics (journal); Oak Ridge National Laboratory (Advisory Committee for Biology, 1955-1968); and the Rockefeller Foundation. Stern's correspondence with friends and colleagues in Germany, England, and the U. S., during the 1920s-1930s, is of particular note as it documents not only the developments in genetics and the institutional and administrative networks supporting research, but it also offers general comments and observations on science, Germany, and politics. The photographs (2 boxes) include pictures of many prominent geneticists and scientists. Principles of Human Genetics,
