The Stanley Burnshaw papers consist of notes, outlines, research materials, typescript drafts, galleys, page proofs, clippings, and correspondence, most of which relate to Burnshaw's works, ca. 1945-1986. Extensive files are present for The Poem Itself, Robert Frost Himself, and The Seamless Web. Other works which are represented in this collection include Caged in an Animal's Mind, The Hero of Silence, Mirages, The Modern Hebrew Poem Itself, The Refusers, The Revolt of the Cats in Paradise, and Varieties of Literary Experience. Additionally, Burnshaw's own activities as an editor and publisher (often in conjunction with his duties for Holt, Rinehart and Winston, including projects involving Edward Dahlberg, Nahum Goldmann, David Ben-Gurion, Laura (Riding) Jackson, Christina Stead, Lionel Trilling, and Louis Untermeyer) are documented. Burnshaw's correspondence frequently consists of detailed exchanges about work-in-progress with other writers, editors, publishers, scholars, and critics. There are substantial files of correspondence, sometimes reflecting personal relationships as well as professional ties, with such varied figures as T. Carmi, Edward Dahlberg, James Daly, James Dickey, Dudley Fitts, Robert Frost, Norman Fruman, Nahum Goldmann, Josephine Herbst, Laura (Riding) Jackson, Haniel Long, John Frederick Nims, Paul Rogers, Gregor Sebba, Karl Shapiro, André Spire, Christina Stead, Lionel Trilling, Louis Untermeyer, Wade Van Dore, and others. Manuscripts, correspondence, financial and legal documents, address books, and personal papers make up the Gertrude Stein Collection. The material was collected by Alice B. Toklas after Stein's death and includes a large amount of Toklas's incoming correspondence. Stein's writings are represented by manuscripts for three titles: Composition as Explanation, Before the Flowers of Friendship Faded Friendship Faded, and From Dark to Day. The correspondence series includes business letters and an extensive series of letters to the poet Georges Hugnet. Among the personal papers are inventories and appraisals of Steins art collection. The Toklas series consists mainly of a large number of incoming letters, some of them concerning Stein's estate. Among the many correspondents in this series are Mrs. William Aspenwall Bradley, Sandy Campbell, Bernard Faÿ, Donald C. Gallup, attorneys Edgar Allan Poe and Russell M. Porter, Virgil Thomson, and Carl Van Vechten, who served as Stein's literary executor.

The collection consists of Millicent Dillon's notebooks, index cards, typescripts, correspondence, photographs, cassette tapes, and clippings, as well as materials by Paul and Jane Bowles she collected, including Jane Bowles's notebooks, typescripts, correspondence, photographs, and legal documents, and Paul Bowles's correspondence and clippings. The collection centers around Dillon's writings about Jane Bowles's life and works. While writing a biography about Jane Bowles, A Little Original Sin: The Life and Works of Jane Bowles, Dillon contacted Jane Bowles's husband, writer-composer Paul Bowles, as well as Jane's relatives, friends, and acquaintances. The resulting correspondence and interview notes are a highlight of the collection. Among the correspondence are 170 letters between Dillon and Paul Bowles from 1976-1990 and one or more letters by Brion Gysin, Patricia Highsmith, Dione Lewis, Miriam Levy, Gordon Sager, Virgil Thomson, and others. Dillon also obtained original letters and photocopies of letters written by Jane Bowles, some of Bowles's notebooks and typescripts, and numerous photographs. Dillon also gathered Jane Bowles's birth and death certificates, as well as other documents relating to Jane Bowles and her family, and was given some of Paul Bowles's correspondence.

George P. Garrett (1929-2008) was a poet, editor, author, and professor of English. The papers of George P. Garrett span the years 1929 to 2000 with the bulk of the material being dated between 1960 and 1990. The papers were initially collected and assembled by author, bibliographer, and publisher Stuart T. Wright. Wright published a number of Garrett's works at his Palaemon Press and also assembled the Stuart Wright Bibliographic Collection of George Garrett (see related materials held by the Rubenstein Library). Additional materials were received by the Library directly from George Garrett. The papers document Garrett's literary career as an author of novels, short stories, poetry, and dramatic works (including filmscripts) and the tremendous influence he had as an English professor and an editor on an entire generation of writers, particularly in the South. Correspondence with numerous authors, publishers, and educators offers much information about the history of 20th-century Southern literature, publishing, and literary education. The collection is divided into the Writings Series (with subseries of Writings by Garrett, Writings Edited by Garrett, Writings by Others, and Proofs); the Correspondence Series (with 5 subseries of alphabetically and chronologically arranged correspondence); the Audiovisual Material Series; and the Miscellaneous Papers Series.

Robert Chester Ruark (1915-1965), journalist, author, world traveler, sportsman, and syndicated columnist; born in Wilmington, N.C.; received his A.B. from the University of North Carolina, 1935; eventually resided in London, England, and Palamos, Spain. The bulk of the papers of Robert Chester Ruark consists of typed drafts and copies of novels, short stories, newspaper and magazine articles, and screenplays, 1942-1945. Also included is professional and personal correspondence. Other papers relate to Ruark's service in the U.S. Navy during World War II, and to his travels and safaris in different part of the world, particularly Africa. His correspondents included friends Ernest Hemingway (one letter and one note, 1953-1954), Bernard Baruch (66 letters, 1953-1965), Richard Nixon (6 letters, 1958-1960), and J. Edgar Hoover (4 letters, 1958-1959); associates, especially his secretary, Alan Ritchie, and his literary agent, Harold Matson; and relatives, especially his wife, Virginia Webb Ruark. The correspondence covers a wide range of personal and literary topics, including journalism, literary philosophy, and African politics. Also included are research materials, reviews, photographs, financial materials, and writings by others. Volumes are chiefly scrapbooks of columns and related clippings.
