Bates Worldwide, Inc. Records, 1934-2003 and undated
Title:
Bates Worldwide, Inc. Records, 1934-2003 and undated
Bates Worldwide advertising agency ( ) was established in 1940 by former executives of the Benton & Bowles agency. It grew to become one of the largest agencies in the U.S. until its demise in 2003. Bates began as a simple proprietorship, but as the company grew its organizational structure took on different forms: a partnership, then a corporation before becoming a publicly traded transnational entity, and finally becoming a subsidiary in a global holding company. From the 1970s on, Bates' growth and international expansion was fueled by a long series of mergers, partnerships and acquisitions that continued until the company was itself acquired, first by the Saatchi & Saatchi and later by the WPP Group. Materials in the collection relate to Bates' permutations into a variety of corporate entities, including Ted Bates & Co., Ted Bates, Inc., Backer Spielvogel Bates, and Bates Worldwide, Inc., along with its subsidiaries (such as Campbell-Mithun and Kobs and Draft) and parent organizations (Cordiant Communications Group, Saatchi & Saatchi). Thus, the collection provides a window into the larger corporate culture of mergers, consolidations, acquisitions and takeovers that led to the formation of giant transnational advertising conglomerates and marked a profound shift in the landscape of the advertising industry during the late 20th century. Bates The Bates Worldwide, Inc. Records spans the years 1934-2003 and includes correspondence, corporate policy manuals, photographs, publications, graphic designs, print advertisements, electronic records and videocassettes that document the activities of this major global advertising agency over the course of its corporate life. Bates built its early reputation as an advertising agency with a particular talent for promoting pharmaceutical products (Carter's Pills, Anacin analgesics) and common household goods (Mars candies, Wonder bread, Palmolive soap, Colgate dental cream). Advertising policies developed around a philosophy Bates called the Unique Selling Proposition (USP), which informed an imperative to identify and promote a single, unique and compelling reason for consumers to use any given product or service. As the company grew into a global business, USP evolved into more complex forms, including the Bates Brand Wheel. Major clients included Brown & Williamson Tobacco Co., Carter-Wallace Corporation, Hyundai America, the Joint Recruiting Advertising Program of the combined U.S. Armed Services, M&M/Mars Inc., Miller Brewing Company, Pfizer, the U.S. Navy and Wendy's International. There is also some information on the company's founder, Ted Bates, as well as on Rosser Reeves, Bates' first copy writer and the chief architect of the USP concept.

American Family Association. Collection of American Family Association materials pertaining to the CBS Television Network's broadcast of a cartoon in which Mighty Mouse allegedly uses cocaine, 1987-1988.
Title:
Collection of American Family Association materials pertaining to the CBS Television Network's broadcast of a cartoon in which Mighty Mouse allegedly uses cocaine, 1987-1988.
IMDb: "A viewer notified media watchdog Reverend Donald Wildmon [of the American Family Association] that, in one episode ["The littlest tramp"] of this series ["Mighty Mouse : the new adventures"], it looks like Mighty Mouse reaches into a pocket and snorts cocaine from his hand to regain his strength ... [Program creator Ralph] Bakshi denies it to this day, maintaining that Mighty Mouse was merely smelling some crushed flowers and that the white jet leading from his hand to his nose was merely a cartoon 'smell line' moving super-fast from the mighty inhale. The episode was immediately pulled ... ". Library's collection consists of six items, material circulated via postal mail by Donald E. Wildmon and the American Family Association. The first item is a [4] page letter from Wildmon addressed to "Concerned parent and friend", detailing, amongst other things, the contents of the episode, CBS's response to complaints, and instructions to "(1) Sign and mail your enclosed postcard to CBS chairman Laurence Tisch. (2) Then sign and mail the two other postcards ... to leaders who stood up to CBS ... (3) Finally, sign and return the enclosed Values Protection Policy". The second item contains headline "CBS declares war on children : proof sheet", with pictures of scenes from the episode in question on one side, and on the other side, excerpts from "Edward J. Stegemann's July 21, 1988 letter to Mr. Laurence Tisch, President & CEO of CBS ... " along a facsimile of another letter to Tisch from "Rob Chandler, member of Congress", the two aforementioned "leaders who stood up to CBS". The third item contains a "Values Protection Policy" on one side, with a blank line for signature and date, and a prewritten letter to Wildmon on the other side, with text beginning "You can count on me to fight back against CBS and help protect our children ... ", along with a checklist for "what actions [the signee is] taking" and an option to donate money to the American Family Association. The fourth item is three prewritten, unperforated postcards, addressed to "Mr. Tisch", "Congressman Chandler" and "Mr. Stegemann". The fifth item is a business reply mail envelope, addressed to Wildmon and the American Family Association. The sixth item is the envelope the previous items were originally mailed in, with Wildmon and the American Family Association as the return address, and "CBS shows Saturday morning cartoon hero sniffing cocaine" printed across the front.

Title:
Newsmen's Commission to Investigate the Murder of George Polk Records Bulk, 1946-1950 1946-1992, bulk 1946-1950
George Polk was a CBS news correspondent covering the Greek civil war who was murdered in Salonika on May 16th, 1948. In the course of his investigations, he had uncovered, and was about to publish, evidence of criminal activity by rightist forces who had the support of the United States and Great Britain. The Newsmen's Commission to Investigate the Murder of George Polk was founded in 1948 at the initiative of the New York Chapter of the Newspaper Guild. Several people associated with the Greek Communist Pary were convicted of involvement in the murder of Polk in a trial and verdict now widely believed to be fraudulent. The collection contains correspondence, clippings, reports, and a transcript of the trial of Gregorios Stahtopoulos and Anna Stahtopoulos, accused of complicity in the murder. There are also photographs of George Polk and some Price family memorabilia. Correspondents include: John Donovan, William Donovan, Ernest Hemingway, Walter Lippman, Herbert Mitgang, Edward Morrow, George Polk, Rhea Polk, William Polk, Constantine Poulos, William Price, Howard Smith, and I.M. Stone.
