Cogswell, J. B. D. (John Bear Doane), 1829-1889. Papers, 1839-1897.

Title: Papers, 1839-1897.

This collection consists of correspondence, articles, addresses, essays, notes, and documents. The correspondence includes letters, for the period 1852 to 1889, to and from John Ordronaux (1830-1908), of New York City, and letters and newsclippings, for the period 1887 to 1889, from Alfred Russell (1830-1906), of Detroit, Mich., as well as photographs of Mrs. Russell and her two daughters. There is also miscellaneous correspondence for the period 1864 to 1889. The documents in this collection include papers, for the period 1853 to 1866, concerning Cogswell's legal career; applications for membership into the Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution by Mary Louisa Trumbull Cogswell Roberts, c. 1897; and biographical information on Cogswell, as well as information on 6 Massachusetts Avenue in Worcester (the former courthouse and Trumbull Mansion). In 1871, Cogswell compiled five notebooks of "Testimony taken before the [Congressional] Committee to inquire into the condition of affairs in the Late Insurrectionary States." This material concerns the activities of the Ku Klux Klan by citing specific cases and victims in North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi, although there are references to the origin, causes, and political significance of the Klan. There are also notes that serve as an index to the five notebooks with some related material. The addresses, articles, and essays include "A Bundle of Old Letters" (n.d.); "Which was the greater general, Napoleon or Wellington?" (n.d.); "The Relation of the Sexes" (1869); "The Woman's Movement, historically considered" (1869); "Timothy Ruggles" (1879?); "Did Mr. Webster preface the 7th of March [1850] Speech with bad faith and personal deception?" (1882); "Hints towards the history of the 7th of March [1850] Speech" (1882?); and "Senator Hoar's Antecedents" (1889). There is also a manuscript entitled "Diary of a New Hampshire Parson" and what appears to be drafts of introductions to and transcriptions of the diary (1786-1787 and 1789) of Rev. Stephen Peabody (1741-1819), who served as minister to the First Congregational Church in Atkinson, N.H., from 1772 to 1819. There are portions of the Salem Gazette for 24 April 1885 with references to Daniel Webster (1782-1852) and Rufus Choate (1799-1859). There are also notes on Choate, two drafts of an essay entitled "Ipswich, a cradle of famous. Rufus Choate, its most gifted son," and an essay "Choate and Chebacco." The collection also contains newspapers articles that appeared in the Boston Sunday Herald. The first, entitled "Daniel Webster's Desk. What a Search Among Its Pigeon Holes Revealed" (two copies), appeared in the 15 January 1882 issue. The second, entitled "Daniel Webster's Desk. Another Batch of the Statemen's Correspondence" (three copies), appeared in the 29 January 1882 issue. One of the octavo volumes is a scrapbook that contains articles clipped from a variety of newspapers regarding the "Southern Question," c. 1876.

The journal and orderly book belonging to John Herbert contain the orders of the First and Second Battalions of Brigadier General Timothy Ruggles Loyalist militia volunteers in 1759, in which Herbert served as Adjutant. During the French and Indian War, Ruggles' men were stationed in Albany, Saratoga, and Ft. Edward, New York.

French and Indian War collection, 1754-1774.

Title: French and Indian War collection, 1754-1774.

This collection of French and Indian War papers includes papers of several individuals. The Burk collection includes the military correspondence of Major John Burk (1717-1784), with letters to Burk from Governor Shirley, Robert Hale, Ephraim Williams, William Pitt, Timothy Ruggles, John Chandler, and others. The collection of Sir William Johnson's (1715-1774) letters consists primarily of drafts of his correspondence with General Thomas Gage, Benjamin Franklin, and others, dealing with his activities among the tribes of the Six Nations. Robert Hale (1703-1767), a physician who commanded a regiment during the Louisburg Campaign, 1745, kept a chronicle of the major political and military events in America and Europe for the war period. The first volume was begun in July 1755 but some items dating back to 1748 were entered at the start of the volume. There are three volumes, the third ending 30 October 1762. There is also a small folder of Hale correspondence. The 1756 Receipt Book of Sir John St. Clair, Quartermaster, is an account of the men employed and receipts for the money expended in the bateau service, New York. Other accounts have been preserved in a "Book of Ballances 1759," a record of money paid and due to men of several Massachusetts companies. There are two diaries of soldiers. The first is by Lieutenant Cornelius Stowell (1724-1804) of Worcester who was stationed at Crown Point, N.Y., 1759. This volume includes regimental orders for the 1st Battalion of Brigadier General Timothy Ruggles' regiment. The second diary is composed of two separate accounts: the first part was written while the soldier was stationed at Fort William Henry, N.Y., 1758, and the second, written by the same soldier, describes an expedition to Louisburg, 1759. The volume includes scattered orders for 1760 and ends with the announcement of 24 September of the surrender of Montreal to General Amherst. The rest of the collection is composed of an assortment of returns, rolls, lists, bills and receipts, documents, commissions and enlistments, and a memorandum book for 1755-1761. Included in the miscellaneous documents is a series of four letters and one undated letter fragment addressed to Michael Martyn who participated in the 1759 campaign against Louisburg. Three of the letters and the fragment were written in 1759 by Benjamin Kneeland from Boston to Martyn in Louisburg. These letters mention other military campaigns, as does a 1762 letter from Rush Salter to Martyn.

Letter to an unidentified addressee discussing the distribution of bounty moneys to recruiting officers. Ruggles suggests that those recruiting officers with more money than they can use give some of their excess funds to those with less than they need. Written at Boston, Mass.

Orderly book kept by Sgt. Erastus Harris of Medway, Mass. Harris recorded orders while at Castle Island (Boston) and Fort Cumberland (Nova Scotia) under the command of Joseph Frye and Brig. Gen. Timothy Ruggles as a member of Frye's regiment of Mass. Provincials during the French and Indian War (1759-60), and while stationed with the 1st Massachusetts Regiment of Guards under the command of Col. Jonathan Reed from Apr.-June 1778.

Mauduit, Jasper. Papers, 1760-1767.

Papers (some copies) of Jasper Mauduit, colonial agent in London for the Province of Massachusetts Bay from 1762-1765, and of his predecessor William Bollan. The papers concern Bollan's term as agent until his removal from office in 1762 following his failure to obtain reimbursement for the Province for military expenditures during the French and Indian War. Mauduit was appointed following his success at obtaining the payments due, and his papers contain instructions, including explanation of the political and civil rights of the colonists; and correspondence concerning Mauduit's term as agent and questions pending between Mass. and Great Britain's Parliament. (Cont.) Subjects include a parliamentary grant for money owed to the Province, the Sugar Act and proposed Stamp Act, the Society for Propagating the Gospel among the Indians and Others in North America, Thomas Hutchinson and Mass. politics, and the non-appointment of Israel Mauduit (Jasper's brother) as joint agent. Earlier papers include military accounts of wages of soldiers paid for 1759 and 1761. Correspondents include William Bollan, Andrew Oliver, Thomas Hutchinson, James Otis (1725-1783), Harrison Gray, Jonathan Mayhew, Thomas Cushing, Charles Chauncy, and Timothy Ruggles.
