Manuscript, in a single hand, of a record of a journey through England, by way of Bristol, Bath, Salisbury and Ramsey and returning through Winchester, Oxford and Cheltenham, in which the author pays particular attention to churches and the weather. The volume also contains a prose piece on Circassian costume; an extract titled Arabs of the desert, taken from Laborde's Arabia Petraea and accompanied by illustrative watercolor drawings; an extract from Howitt's Rural life in Germany; and an extract on women of Galway from Mrs. S. C. Hall's Ireland. The manuscript also contains numerous sentimental verses, including many by Felicia Hemans, such as The ivy of Kenilworth, accompanied by a pressing of ivy leaves, and The cliffs of Dover, accompanied by a detailed pencil drawing of the cliffs; as well as other poems by Eliza Cook, William Wordsworth, and Charles Swain. The manuscript is extensively illustrated with 32 original pen and ink, pencil, and watercolor drawings of scenery, churches, castles, and people.

Manuscript, in a single hand, of a collection of several hundred prose extracts and verses on such primarily sentimental or lighthearted subjects as love, flowers, friendship, and nature. In addition to several poems about albums, the volume includes several poems addressed to Louisa, the owner of the album, including one in French to "Louise Anthony." Other poems include those by George Byron, Felicia Hemans, Sir Walter Scott, William Wordsworth, Robert Pollok, and Charles Swain. The collection also contains numerous aphorisms by Scott, Samuel Coleridge, Madame de Stael, William Cowper, and Maria Edgeworth, on topics such as society, simplicity, censure, truth, genius, and good breeding, as well as a prose piece titled Church Bells by Douglas Jerrold. Also included in the volume are a humorous dictionary; a page of Hebrew writing; epigrams; a chart titled Key to the Egyptian Hieroglyphicks; a list of botanical emblems by Lady Mary Wortley Montagu; a Recipe for making poetry; and a poem signed Louisa titled One o'clock, a Manchester poem. Interspersed throughout the manuscript are numerous drawings, watercolor sketches, and engravings. These include a watercolor of two open pages of a book which describe the task of an author; a colored pencil drawing of a chart illustrating Dante's Inferno; colored ink drawings of fruits, butterflies and birds; and an ink drawing of a pastoral scene. Many of the drawings are annotated with the names of their creators.

Verses include Good Bye by Eliza Cook; To a Beautiful Young Lady by Anna Laetitia Barbauld; The Rose by William Cowper; A Plea for Beautiful Things by Fanny Farmer; and Music by Mrs. Cornwell Baron Wilson; other poets in the volume include James Rogers, Charles Swain, and Frances Browne. The volume also contains numerous anecdotes and epigrams, both humorous and instructive, on such subjects as "George the 3d. and his Tailor," "Repartee," and "Origin of Blind Man's Buff." One entry on "Temper" declares that "Heaven did not give to the female sex insinuation and persuasion, in order to be surly."

Scrapbook containing manuscripts, photographs, correspondence, and printed ephemera relating chiefly to Benjamin Hazard Field. The scrapbook consists chiefly of manuscript and printed versions (clippings) of poems. There are manuscript drafts and copies of poems by Field, his daughter, Virginia Hazard Field, DeWitt Clinton Judah, and M. Cohen Stuart. There are printed versions of poems by Field, Clinton, and numerous other American and English writers of the mid to late nineteenth century, including William Cullen Bryant, John White Chadwick, Emily C. Judson, Augusta Larned, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Mary Toles Peet, Charles Swain, and Martin Farquhar Tupper. There are four cartes-de-visite images of Field and five autograph signed letters, including two from Field, to Reverend Henry Yates Satterlee and "Mlle Le Prince," and one to Field from DeWitt Clinton Judah. Additional printed ephemera includes a reproduction of the presidents of the New-York Historical Society, including Field, and an invitation from the Home for Incurables (later St. Barnabas Hospital for Chronic Diseases), Field's principal New York area charity.

Manuscript, in a single hand, of a collection of over 150 poems by various authors, including personal acquaintances, on primarily sentimental subjects such as friendship, love, music, and especially death. Authors include Byron, Wordsworth, Sir Walter Scott, James Montgomery, Felicia Hemans, Charles Swain, Thomas Moore, and Letitia Landon (L.E.L). One anonymous poem was inspired by a visit in 1808 to the vale of Todmorden, where the author saw a young man dying of consumption being nursed by his fiancee. The manuscript is illustrated by 40 engraved portraits of contemporary nobility, actresses and other performers, and authors, including some men but primarily women. Subjects include King George IV; the Duchess of Clarence; and Empress Maria Louisa; the actresses and performers Madame Saqui; Miss Love; and Madame Cataloni; and the authors Washington Irving; George Byron; Maria Edgeworth; Mary Russell Mitford; Mary Brunton; and Catherine Hutton.

Manuscript, in a single hand, of a collection of about 72 sentimental and elegiac poems, primarily on such subjects as love, friendship, women, solitude, and deaths of friends and relatives. Many of the poems in the manuscript are dated and initialed; several are annotated with the place name "Ashbourne"; and the volume includes a poem titled An amatorial and valedictory epistle to my dear Ashbourne from a distant and despised admirer. Other poems in the volume include those by Goethe, George Byron, William Cowper, Charles Swain, Lady Caroline Lamb, Felicia Hemans, and Thomas Ragg; unattributed poems include The heart's misgivings; The sigh of love; The power of gold; On a naval officer buried in the Atlantic; and Lines, supposed to be spoken by a lover at the grave of his mistress. The volume also includes two cutout embossed greeting cards, partially hand-colored and pasted in; and a diagram labeled "Contents of a Lady's dressing case" with paper flaps covering writing underneath.

The literary papers include Seba Smith's column on Major Jack Downing and Solomon Swope, and reviews of his "New elements of geometry"; drafts and copies of numerous poems, short stories, essays and lectures by Mrs. Smith as well as manuscripts of her plays "Destiny," "Roman tribute," and "Old New York," sermons, 1877, from her pastorate of the Independent Church, Canastota, N.Y.; Edward Oaksmith's translations of Moliere's "Miser"; and manuscripts and clippings of poems and short stories by Seba, the sons and granddaughters. Letters and diaries discuss the publication of the Jack Downing letters and criticism of the geometry; Mrs. Smith's literary career and lecture tours; her efforts to vindicate Appleton from charges of slave trading brought by William H. Seward, Appleton's divorce from his first wife and the drowning of his four daughters in an 1879 North Carolina boating acident; the diplomatic careers of Appleton and Sidney in Nicaragua, Haiti, and Panama; Edward's religious meditations, conversion to Catholicism and Jesuit novitiate in France; Sidney's law practice and death at sea in 1869; and efforts of Mrs. Smith and her daughter-in-law Delfina Oaksmith to run boarding houses. Other topics inclue the "thermolume" cure, New England literary figures, current events, spiritualism, abolition, Mrs. Smith's interviews with Thurlow Weed and Andrew Johnson on behalf of Appleton, her campaign in behalf of a condemned woman, and her controversy with P. T. Barnum over unauthorized use of her name; and descriptions of life in Portland, Maine, New Mexico in 1885, and Lettsburg, Northumberland County, Va., 1884-1892. Of special interest is her eyewitness account of the 1863 New York City draft riot. The collection also contains a youthful diary, 1871-1873, of Elizabeth Oaksmith, photographs, and scrapbooks compiled by Augusta Oaksmith containing clippings re the family and their literary output.
