Album of poems and Victorian cards, [ca. 1844-1878].

Manuscript, in a single hand, of a collection of about 72 sentimental and elegiac poems, primarily on such subjects as love, friendship, women, solitude, and deaths of friends and relatives. Many of the poems in the manuscript are dated and initialed; several are annotated with the place name "Ashbourne"; and the volume includes a poem titled An amatorial and valedictory epistle to my dear Ashbourne from a distant and despised admirer. Other poems in the volume include those by Goethe, George Byron, William Cowper, Charles Swain, Lady Caroline Lamb, Felicia Hemans, and Thomas Ragg; unattributed poems include The heart's misgivings; The sigh of love; The power of gold; On a naval officer buried in the Atlantic; and Lines, supposed to be spoken by a lover at the grave of his mistress. The volume also includes two cutout embossed greeting cards, partially hand-colored and pasted in; and a diagram labeled "Contents of a Lady's dressing case" with paper flaps covering writing underneath.
