Copies of letters, some with orders for merchandise, of Philadelphia merchant Stephen Collins. Most of the letters were written to other merchants, agents, or ship captains. These include the firms of Jenks & Forrester and Davis, Pitt, & Davis; Samuel Elam and George Oates, William Neate, William Gray, Boston merchant Jonathan Amory, and Capt. Robert Rantoul. Among Collins's concerns was the estate of Philadelphia merchant William Barrell, of which he was the administrator. The letters contain frequent references to the war with Great Britain and the consequent disruption of trade.

Title: Letters to William Barrell [transcriptions], 1772-1776.

Handwritten transcriptions of letters written by John Andrews, a lawyer in Boston, Mass., addressed to his brother-in-law, Philadelphia merchant William Barrell, 1772-76. Letters discuss animosities between British soldiers and the colonists, especially the tea tax; the formation of the minutemen; murders; deserters; and military readiness. Patriots mentioned include John Hancock, George Washington, Henry Knox, and Samuel Adams. Also includes a letter about Benjamin Hitchborn's accidental shooting of John's brother, Benjamin Andrews, 11 April 1776. The transcripts were compiled and edited by Winthrop Sargent in 1865. Location of original letters is unknown.

Correspondence, ledgers, journal, cash book, invoice books, and other papers relating to the importing of goods from Europe and the sale of them to merchants in New England and Philadelphia. This Boston firm imported from various European cities cloth of all kinds, hardware, cutlery, wines, stationery, cheese, white English salt, and Bibles. They sold these imported goods to merchants in New England and Philadelphia through "Trade Agreements". An interesting part of the collection is a package of drafts for supplies for the French fleet under Admiral de Grasse, 1781-1782.

A wide-ranging collection of letters from or to John Andrews, John Eliot, William Barrell, David Ramsay, Samuel Miller, Ezra Stiles, Eliphalet Nott, Cotton Mather, Andrew Eliot, and many others. About one-third of the collection consists of the letters of Bostonian John Andrews to his brother-in-law William Barrell of Philadelphia from 1771 to 1776, with accounts of the growing rebellion against British rule. An account of two Indians written by Susannah Rawson in 1715 is also included.
