Title: Musicians Collection, 1727-1981, (bulk 1900-1940).

Consists of ca. 4900 items which are primarily of a visual nature and portray approximately 1700 musicians and musical groups: classical composers, conductors, soloists, and ensembles; big bands and bandleaders; bandmasters; impresarios; vaudeville artists, minstrel show performers, and other variety acts; twentieth-century American musical theater composers; and post-1940 popular singers and musical groups, including country singers. Photographs comprise about 95% of the collection. Other formats present are engravings, lithographs, clippings, concert programs, brochures, booklets, sheet music, vocal and instrumental scores, drawings, paintings, postcards, correspondence, posters, and ephemera. The bulk of the collection consists of publicity photographs, ca. 1900-1940, of vaudeville and variety acts, popular singers, jazz musicians, and brass band-type ensembles. African-American and female musicians represent a substantial portion of the figures covered by these files, especially from the late nineteenth century and the early decades of the twentieth century. A large number of cabinet cards and cartes-de-visite date from this period. Most of the photographs are gelatin silver prints. Other formats include ca. 500 engravings and lithographs of famous composers and classical musicians, 1727-1887 (bulk ca. 1880-1860). Of these, Irish musicians are prominent. About a dozen drawings in charcoal, pencil, pen and ink, and watercolor are present, as well as an oil painting of Beethoven. The great majority of the concert programs in the collection are for classical musicians appearing in New York at Mendelssohn Hall, Aeolian Hall, Carnegie Hall, and Town Hall. Many of the programs for the latter date from late March 1941. Letters in the collection, 1780s-1977 (bulk 1820s-1860s) are chiefly written by classical composers. The manuscript and printed music includes works by several American musicians, including autograph lyrics and music for twenty-eight of Paul Anka's songs, probably from the early 1960s. Published music includes arrangements and piano and vocal scores for compositions by Victor Herbert and Pietro Mascagni. Composite portraits are located at the end of the alphabet, followed by Unidentified and Miscellaneous items. A very small number of items pertain to non-musical subjects (painters, actors, etc.).

The A.P. Schmidt Company archives contains music, correspondence, business and financial records, and related documents. These materials provide a detailed look at the management, daily operations, and history of the Schmidt firm. In the music series, which contains manuscripts and some printed music and is the largest part of the collection, are examples of music composed by Americans at the turn of the twentieth century and selected for publication by Schmidt. The majority of the music in the collection is in autograph form; some are holographs in the hand of the composer and many are the work of Schmidt company editors and arrangers. It is from these manuscripts that the Schmidt company prepared its publications. The music in the collection is principally for voice, chorus or piano, with some examples of large-scale orchestral music as well. It should be noted that none of the manuscripts of Edward MacDowell, one of Schmidt's most important composers, accompanied the collection to the Library of Congress. It may be assumed that after MacDowell's death, most of his manuscripts were returned to his widow, Marian MacDowell (see the Edward and Marian MacDowell Collection). In French," six chapters of "A tramp abroad," one chapter of "The gilded age," prefaces to the English editions of "The innocents abroad" and "Roughing it," and several other shorter pieces including "At the shrine of St. Wagner," "Be good, be good, a poem," "Concerning the Jews," "The death-disk" "From the London Times of 1904" "The great revolution in Pitcairn," "How the chimney-sweep got the ear of the emperor," "The invallid's story," "The paradise of the rheumatics," "The regular toast," and "A true story," together with Susy Clemens's "Biography of Mark Twain" with his footnotes, proof sheets of his "Autobiography," a family journal from Australia, India, etc. [in a dummy book "Heroines of History"], and John Galsworthy's "Tribute" to Twain written in the greeting book of the Mark Twain Society. Family correspondence consists of cheerful letters to his wife Olivia Clemens and daughters Susy, Clara and Jean about his travels, lecture audiences, and acquaintances. There are also letters to his mother Jane L. Clemens, his brother Orion and family, his nephew Sam Moffett and his sister-in-law and her husband Susan Langdon and Theodore Crane. Business correspondence concerns Twain's emergence from the bankruptcy of Charles L. Webster Publishing Co. in which he was the majority stockholder. There are also book contracts, papers concerning his ill fated Paige typesetter investment, and papers concerning Edward H. House's unsuccessful suit against him over dramatization rights to "The prince and the pauper." There is professional correspondence with authors, editors, and publishers in the United States and England including Hjalmar Boyesen, George Washington Cable, William H. Claggett, John Galsworthy (to Cyril Clemens), William Dean Howells, Albert Bigelow Paine, George Bernard Shaw, and Charles Dudley Warner. Other correspondents include fellow journalists and miners in the U.S. West in the 1860s, voyagers on "The Quaker City," friends in Hartford, Ct., Hannibal, Mo., and Keokuk, Ia., members of the Players Club and other societies to which he belonged, friends from his travels, and his reading public. The collection also contains Clemens family real estate notebooks, n.d.; photographs of Twain, his family and friends; a portrait by Mrs. Edward A. Ward; a bronze bust by Albert Weinert, 1899; drawings, medallions and other art including illustrations of Twain's works.

Correspondence includes 21 thank-you notes and brief letters from George Szell to Müller and similar notes from Robert Casadesus, Zino Francescatti, Ossip Gabrilowitsch, Joseph Gingold, Walter Gieseking, Sir Eugene Goossens, Joseph Szigeti, and Alexandre Tansman, as well as from Wyndham Lewis. There are also autographs of Henri Casadesus, Marius Casadesus, Raya Garbousova, Alexander Glazunov, Vladimir Horowitz, Josef Hofmann, Arthur Honegger, Amparo Iturbi, Bernardino Molinari, Francis Poulenc, Sergey Prokofiev, Maurice Ravel, Ottorino Respighi, Arnold Schoenberg, and Deems Taylor; and photographs, many by Müller, of R. Casadesus, Francescatti, Gabrilowitsch, Garbousova, Gieseking, Honegger, Miquelle, Pierre Monteux, Ravel, and Respighi. There is also include a makeshift baton, of wood, signed by Ravel.
