The records of the Pennsylvania Power & Light Company document the history of the gas and electric utility industry in eastern Pennsylvania in the years between 1853 and 1955. The collection includes both the administrative and operating records of more than 1100 companies that merged to form the PP&L system. The firms represented in the collection include electric companies, manufactured and natural gas companies, steam heating, water supply, street railway, bus, traction, coal mining and coal dredging, real estate and holding companies. These records document the economic and technical development of the utility industry against the background of the political and social environment of eastern Pennsylvania.

The George and Marguerite Westinghouse Papers are housed in one archival box and two shelf volumes. The collection contains a variety of materials, most of which illustrate their social lives. The dinner programs, seating charts, and social notebook found in this group mostly reflect the Westinghouse's entertainment style at the "Blaine House", their residence on DuPont Circle in Washington, D.C. The collection also contains photographs of the family, including their son, George Westinghouse, III.

Peale-Sellers family collection, 1686-1963

Title: Peale-Sellers Family Collection, 1686-1963

The collection, divided into seven series, represents the careers and interests of the members of the Peale-Sellers family from the 1670s to 1960s. More than half is correspondence among various members of the families. The Peale family is best known as a family of artists; however, family interests and activities were much more wide-ranging. The best known Peale is Charles Willson Peale (1741-1827, APS 1786), who produced more than one thousand paintings, including hundreds of portraits of leading Americans during the colonial and early national periods. Peale was married three times, to Rachel Brewster (1744-1790), Elizabeth de Peyster (1765-1804), and Hannah More (1755-1821). He had eighteen children, eleven of whom reached adulthood. Three of Charles Willson Peale’s sons became artists: Raphaelle Peale (1774-1825), Rembrandt Peale (1778-1860), and Rubens Peale (1784-1865). A fourth son, Titian Ramsay Peale (1799-1885, APS 1833), was a naturalist (who made drawings on the exploring expeditions he accompanied) and pioneer in photography, and another son, Benjamin Franklin Peale (1795-1870), became a naturalist and paleontologist. Peale’s daughter Sophonisba Angusciola was married to Coleman Sellers (1781-1834), an inventor and manufacturer of machinery, including locomotives. Two of their sons, George Escol Sellers (1808-1899) and Coleman Sellers (1827-1907, APS 1872), were inventors and engineers. The latter served as director of the construction of the hydro-electric power development at Niagara Falls. He was married to Cornelia Wells Sellers (1831-1909). One of their grandsons was Charles Coleman Sellers (1903-1980, APS 1979), a librarian and historian and the author of several studies of the Peale family, including a Charles Willson Peale biography.

The collection consists of thirty-three volumes of manufacturing and repair records for equipment produced by the Westinghouse Machine Company between 1881 and 1921. The volumes, which are labeled "Duplicate Engine Records," were copied from the original records, apparently for the use of the company's Order Department. The records are arranged in five categories: Standard Engine; Junior Engine; Compound Engine; Gas Engine; and Special Engines, Pumps, and Miscellany. Each engine was numbered in the order of its manufacture. The records for each engine include the engine number, a shop order number, the date of manufacture, the size and speed of the engine, the parts numbers for the engine components, testing information, repair and maintenance orders, and the name and location of the company that purchased the engine. Some of the engine records include sketches and drawings of component parts.

A copy of the legal charter for the company is also included, as well as a few 50th and 100th anniversary materials. Correspondence, memoranda, speeches, press releases, clippings, printed matter, photographs, and memorabilia documenting Hilles' activities as secretary to President Taft (1911-1913), as chairman and committeeman to the Republican National Committee (1912-1937) and as Assistant Secretary of the Treasury (1909-1911). His correspondence as Taft's secretary is of special importance as being originally part of the President's office files. His work as administrator of the Ohio Industrial School (1892-1902) and the New York Juvenile Asylum (1902-1909) is also documented in the correspondence. Family correspondence is particularly rich for the fall of 1911 when Hilles was touring the country with President Taft, and for 1912 just before his appointment as chairman of the Republican National Committee. Correspondents of note include Charles Francis Adams, William Jennings Bryan, Nicholas Murray Butler, Andrew Carnegie, Josephus Daniels, Charles G. Dawes, Theodore Dreiser, Henry W. Through 1869 the papers consist of personal correspondence while Samuel Spencer was at the Georgia Miliary Academy, serving in the Confederate Army, and at the universities of Georgia and Virginia. Beginning in 1870 there is both personal and business correspondence and a large quantity of business papers, including company reports, surveys, financial statements, bills, receipts, legal papers, lists of stockholders, engineering notes, scrapbooks, and other items pertaining to many of the railroads for which Spencer was engineer, manager, or director, in particular the Baltimore & Ohio, Southern, Savannah & Memphis, and Long Island roads, and to other companies with which he was connected, including the Columbus (Ga.) water works; Pittsburgh & Chicago Gas & Coal Co;, West Virginia Oil Co.; two coke manufacturing firms; the Union Stockyard Company of Chicago; Westinghouse Electric Corporation of Pittsburgh, including correspondence with George Westinghouse; and New York bankers Drexel, Morgan & Company, for whom he was the railroad expert. Other correspondents include many national business and political leaders of the post Civil War period, among them his father-in- law, Henry Lewis Benning (1814-1875), Georgia Supreme Court justice and Confederate brigadier general. Also included are Spencer's detailed letters while traveling in the western United States and Mexico, 1885, and materials, 1915-1919, of his son, Henry B. Spencer, relating to the Tennessee Railway Company. A scrapbook contains clippings, correspondence, and speeches on railroad regulation, 1905-1906.
