Title:
Papers, 1966-1996.
Manuscripts, galley proofs, research materials, notes, correspondence, clippings, photographs, and other printed material highlight Shelby Hearon's writing career. The bulk of the collection consists of research notes, manuscript drafts, and promotional files pertaining to Hearon's books published before 1995. All of her novels between 1968 and 1994, including Armadillo in the Grass, Hug Dancing, Owning Jolene, and Painted Dresses, are represented in this collection. Some titles are more complete than others, and follow the entire creative process from initial notes and drafts to publication and reception. Also found are many of Hearon's short stories, articles, book reviews, as well as manuscript material from Barbara Jordan's co-authored autobiography. The collection also contains Hearon's working files, which trace her literary career as a lecturer, book reviewer, and short story writer. Additionally, Hearon's fellowship grants, speaking tours, and literary friendships are documented in the working files. A highlight of both series is the correspondence between Hearon and her editors Sally Arteseros, Judith Jones, and Thomas A. Stewart, and long-time agent Wendy Weil.

Title:
Guide to the Daily Worker and Daily World Photographs Collection, 1920-2001
The official organ of the Communist Party, USA, the Daily Worker's editorial positions reflected the policies of the Communist Party. At the same time the paper also attempted to speak to the broad left-wing community in the United States that included labor, civil rights, and peace activists, with stories covering a wide range of events, organizations and individuals in the United States and around the world. As a daily newspaper, it covered the major stories of the twentieth century. However, the paper always placed an emphasis on radical social movements, social and economic conditions particularly in working class and minority communities, poverty, labor struggles, racial discrimination, right wing extremism with an emphasis on fascist and Nazi movements, and of course the Soviet Union and the world-wide Communist movement. The paper has had a succession of names and has been published in varying frequences between daily to weekly over the course of its existence. In 2010 it ceased print publication and became an electronic, online-only, weekly publication titled the People's World. The bulk of the collection consists of printed photographic images produced through a variety of processes, collected by the photography editors of the Daily Worker and its successor newspapers as a means of maintaining an organized collection of images for use in publication. Images of many important people, groups and events associated with the CPUSA and the American Left are present in the collection, as well as images of a wide variety of people, subjects and events not explicitly linked with the CPUSA or Left politics.

Title:
Alfred M. Gruenther Papers. 1941 - 1978. Photographs
This series consists of photographs accumulated by Alfred M. Gruenther between the beginning of the Second World War and his death in 1983. The majority of the photographs fall into two groups. Photos in the first group concern Gruenther's U.S. Army career while at Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE), where he served as Chief of Staff and then Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR). Some of these photos were taken at SHAPE locations in France and Belgium. Other locations featured include Fontainebleau, France; Lisbon, Portugal; Rome, Italy; Luxembourg; Ottawa, Ontario; and places in West Germany, England, Malta, Greece, and Turkey. Many SHAPE personnel, European leaders, and North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) diplomats appear in these photographs. Also included are photos of SHAPE alumni banquets and meetings of the SHAPE Officers' Association. Photos in the second group concern Gruenther's term as president of the American National Red Cross from 1957-1964. In this capacity Gruenther was photographed visiting foreign countries such as the Philippines, where he met members of the Philippine National Red Cross, and speaking at institutions and events across the United States. Gruenther is shown at Columbia University; at Ft. Myer, Virginia; Assumption College, Worcester, Massachusetts; at Creighton University, Omaha, Nebraska; and at Boy Scouts of America events. During this time, he also attended several annual Forrestal Award Dinners presented by the National Security Industrial Association. A set of 11 photos included in the series were used by Gruenther during an appearance on the Today Show in 1962 to illustrate disaster relief undertaken by the Red Cross. Another set of photos features Barbara Eisenhower visiting the Hellenic Red Cross Headquarters in Athens, Greece, in 1959. Also included in the series are 27 portraits of American Red Cross staff members. Other photographs in the series show Gruenther speaking in later years to a meeting of the Jewish War Veterans of the United States of America in New York City, at Madigan General Hospital in Tacoma, Washington, and at the National War College in Washington, D.C. He also appears attending a lecture at the National Defense University at Fort McNair, Washington, D.C. A few photos show Gruenther at Bohemian Grove encampments. The series also contains a variety of photographs of Dwight D. Eisenhower taken at various important times and places, including at the White House, addressing the United Nations General Assembly, and on visits to countries around the world. The series includes photographs removed from three photograph albums. The first was given to Gruenther by Loyola University of Los Angeles after he spoke at commencement exercises in 1965. The second was given to him by Seattle University after he spoke at commencement exercises in 1956. The third was compiled and given to Gruenther by WOJG Margaret J. Finnegan upon her departure from service in his office at SHAPE, ca. 1954. Most photographs in this last album are SHAPE photographs. Other persons of interest appearing in this series include Sherman Adams, Vincent Auriol, Milton G. Baker, King Baudouin of Belgium, Joseph Bech, Georges Bidault, Robert Bostwick Carney, Donald F. Carpenter, Winston Churchill, Mark W. Clark, John Boyd Coates, Russell E. Dougherty, Anthony Eden, John S. D. Eisenhower, Mamie Doud Eisenhower, Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain, Gerald R. Herbert Brownell Jr. Additional Papers. 1897 - 1996. Photographs
This series consists of photographic prints, slides, negatives, transparencies, and postcards accumulated by Herbert Brownell, Jr., throughout his lifetime. Many of the images are of members of Brownell and his family, including studio portraits and informal snapshots. Several cabinet card portraits of Brownell's ancestors were made as long ago as the 1880s or 1890s. Other family photographs date to Brownell's childhood and youth and that of his first wife, Doris McCarter Brownell. There are many photos of the Brownells' children. There are also group portraits of Brownell and his family taken up into the 1980s or early 1990s, as well as some photos featuring artist Marion “Riki” Taylor, to whom Brownell was briefly married. Photographs from Brownell's youth include some from his time at the University of Nebraska, where he was a member of the Society of Innocents and the Delta Upsilon Fraternity. Some photographs may be from Brownell's long employment at law firm Lord, Day & Lord, although they are not labeled. Brownell appears at meetings of the American Hotel Association and the Hotel Association of New York City. Several photographs show him with groups at restaurant “21” in New York City. Photos of Brownell's early political activity include a few from his runs for state assemblyman in New York in the 1930s, as well as a number taken while Brownell was campaign manager for Thomas E. Dewey's gubernatorial and presidential campaigns during the 1940s. Photos of the candidates and of examples of political advertising are present in the series. Many photos in this series were taken during or just before Herbert Brownell's term as Attorney General during the administration of President Dwight D. Eisenhower. These include a small number of photos taken on Eisenhower's 1952 trip to Korea. A set of black and white snapshots shows the members of Eisenhower's Cabinet riding in the 1953 Inauguration Day Parade. Photos feature Attorney General Brownell with the President's Cabinet, at the Department of Justice, at the FBI National Academy, at the White House, at Camp David, and at meetings of the American Bar Association, Inter-American Bar Association, and National Association of Attorneys General. Brownell instituted the Attorney General's Honors Program at the Department of Justice, the first classes of which appear in group photographs with Brownell. He is shown speaking at meetings with the National Industrial Conference Board and the Zionist Organization of America. He is also shown addressing the press, courts, and committees on such topics as governmental investigations, internal security, communism, and wiretapping. Brownell is pictured receiving several honorary degrees during and after his term as Attorney General, including one from the National University of Ireland. Organizations that Brownell was involved in and are depicted in the series include the Bohemian Club, the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research, and the governing council of the White Burkett Miller Center at the University of Virginia. Later involvement of Herbert Brownell with the federal government includes dealing with issues of water rights and water quality management on the lower Colorado River, investigating geothermal resources in California's Imperial Valley, and being vice-chairman of the Commission on the Bicentennial of the U.S. Constitution. He also is pictured with the Congressional sponsors of the 25th Amendment and the supporting American Bar Association Committee, and, in another photo, with the Coalition for Adequate Judicial Compensation while testifying before the House Judiciary Committee's Subcommittee on Courts, Civil Liberties and the Administration of Justice. Some locations where Herbert Brownell appears in photographs in this series include the U.S. Military Academy at West Point; the Executive Mansion in Monrovia, Liberia; Middle Temple Hall in London; Peru State College, Nebraska; the Bohemian Grove in California; and Plymouth, Massachusetts. He also appears at the Dwight D. Eisenhower Presidential Library at conferences on constitutional issues and civil rights. Additional persons of interest who appear in photographs in this series include Sherman Adams, Hawthorne Arey, William H. Avery, Stanley N. Barnes, Birch Bayh, Griffin B. Bell, James V. Bennett, Ezra Taft Benson, Omar Bradley, John W. Bricker, Baron Nigel Bridge of Harwich, Warren E. Burger, W. Randolph Burgess, George H. W. Bush, Clifford P. Case, Emanuel Celler, Benjamin R.
