Title: May family collection, 1760-1899.

Collection consists of issues of The Massachusetts Register and United States Calendar for 1816, 1817, 1824-1828, 1835-1837, and 1841, and of eight printed volumes from the May family library (imprints dated 1760-1852). All but the 1841 issue of The Massachusetts Register were owned and used as diaries by Col. Joseph May. The 1841 issue, owned and used as a diary by Joseph's son Samuel Joseph, includes an entry referring to Joseph's burial. The 1824 issue includes a dated (1899) inscription showing passing of ownership of the volume to John E. May. The eight May library volumes. (Cont.) bear inscriptions reflecting ownership by Samuel May (1723-1794), his son Joseph, his son Samuel Joseph, and his sons Joseph and John Edward. One of Samuel Joseph's books (The Chinese Classical Work Commonly Called the Four Books; 1828) also bears the signature of A. Bronson Alcott on the title page.

Diaries of John Gallison, lawyer, Unitarian, and social and religious activist, are a record of his last days at Harvard University and the circumstances of his dismissal in 1807; his academic and legal studies, some of which were under the tutelage of John Quincy Adams; his legal practice; responses to significant historical events; his work for Nathan Hale and the Boston Weekly Messenger; his involvement in the American Peace Society, Lewis Tappan's Religious Association, William Ellery Channing's Federal Street Church (now the Arlington Street Church), and anti-slavery meetings concerning the Missouri Compromise. Gallison's Sunday entries focus on the content of Channing's sermons. Also described are Gallison's encounters and relations with the Channing, Gray, May, and Sewall families; and with John Adams, William Gray, Samuel Joseph May, Joseph May, Samuel Sewall, Joseph Story, and Benjamin Tappan.

Annotated almanacs of Joseph May, secretary of the Boston Marine Insurance Company, kept from 1790, 1792-1795, and 1798-1839. Brief, scattered entries note the movement of vessels and cargoes insured by the company; company news, such as the election of officers and the sale of stock; and the events of the War of 1812 and their effect on the company's shipping interests. May also comments on current events, including local politics and elections, foreign affairs, and deaths in the community, particularly notable individuals and politicians.

Palfrey family papers, 1713-1915

Title: Palfrey family papers, 1713-1915

Papers of the Palfrey family of New England. The material of this collection encompasses over 150 years of American history and many items of interest besides those documenting the life and works of John Gorham Palfrey, who is its central figure. A few of these may be briefly mentioned here. The papers of William Palfrey include letters between John Wilkes and the Sons of Liberty and William Palfrey's personal correspondence with Wilkes at the time of the latter's imprisonment in 1769-1770, including Palfrey's description of the Boston Massacre. William Palfrey's business account and financial papers are extensive and range in subject from accounts of trade with Virginia in 1763 to the disposition of funds of the Continental Army during the time Palfrey was Pay Master General. His close association and correspondence with John Hancock should be noted. Several interesting items pertain to the dispute between Hancock and the Boston printer, John Mein, which resulted in Thomas Longman's suit against Mein and the latter's imprisonment. The papers of John Palfrey deal mainly with his business affairs and the management of his plantation at Attakapas. However, several letters by his sons, Edward, William Taylor, and Henry William give first-hand accounts of battles in the war of 1812. Letters to John Gorham Palfrey from over 1000 corespondents form the largest single section in the collection. Of special importance are 377 letters from Jared Sparks and 148 letters from Charles Sumner.
