Percy, Walker, 1916-1990. Walker Percy papers, 1910-1992.

Title: Walker Percy papers, 1910-1992.

The collection includes drafts, notes, and other materials relating to all of Percy's major works and to many of his shorter efforts. Also included are subject files containing source materials and other items relating to authors and topics in which he was particularly interested, including religious themes in literature and the intellectual life of the American South. There are also materials relating to John Kennedy Toole's A Confederacy of Dunces (1980), which Percy helped publish. The collection contains a large amount of correspondence with authors, critics, and others. Most significant among Percy's correspondents were Shelby Foote, a life-long friend; Caroline Gordon, who, in the early 1950s, offered Percy in-depth critiques of his work and pointers on writing in general; and Donald Barthelme, who wrote about Percy's submissions to the journal Forum. Other correspondents include Zoltan Abadi Nagy, Malcolm Bell, Cleanth Brooks, Gary M. Ciuba, James Collins, Ansley Cope, John William Corrington, Robert Woodham Daniel, John N. Deely, Clifton Fadiman, Robert Giroux, Peter Handke, John Hofer, Paul Horgan, Kenneth Laine Ketner, Victor A. Kramer, Bernald Malamud, Jacques Maritain, Doug Marlette, Thomas Merton, Flannery O'Connor, Walter J. Ong, J. F. Powers, Thomas A. Sebeok, Elizabeth Spencer, Lewis P. Simpson, Allen Tate, Mark Taylor, Gene Usdin, Henry Babcock Veatch, Eudora Welty, and C. Vann Woodward. There are also over 200 formal and informal photographs, most of Percy with his family, including his uncle William Alexander Percy, but some of Percy with Pope John Paul II, Ronald Reagan, Nancy Reagan, Eudora Welty, Cleanth Brooks, C. Vann Woodward, Elizabeth Spencer, Louis D. Rubin Jr., Ernest Gaines, Shelby Foote, and others. Also included are several hats and a sweater belonging to Percy.

Walker Percy was raised in Georgia,Alabama, and Greenville, Miss., and lived most of his adult life in Covington, La.He was the author of six published novels: (1961), (1966), (1971), (1977), (1980), and (1987). Title: The Robert T. Francoeur papers, 1938-1975.

The Robert Francoeur papers consist largely of correspondence and other documents relating in one way or another to the career of Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, to the activities of the British and American Teilhard associations, and to various aspects of Francoeur's own interest in Teilhard. The bulk of the correspondence is from George B. Barbour, Jeanne-Marie Mortier, Walter J. Ong, S.J., Dorothy Poulain, and Hugh Van Dusen of Harper & Row publishers. Other correspondents are Catherine Aller, J. Franklin Ewing, D. Wade Safford, Cyril Vollert, S.J., and John V. Walsh. The collection also contains one letter (1938) from Teilhard to Lucile Swan. The materials relating to the American Teilhard Association are supplemented by issues 3-9 of its newsletter. In addition to a large assemblage of photocopied articles and reviews by Francoeur and others, the collection includes a copy of 'The sacred and salvation', a doctoral dissertation by Thomas Kramlinger, 'There shall be one Christ : a collection of essays on Teilhard de Chardin' edited by Michael D. Meilach, 3 copies of 'A basic Teilhard bibliography' compiled by Almagno Romano, and a long run of 'The Teilhard review' (vol 2, no. 2-vol. 10, no. 3).

Title: Walter J. Ong manuscript collection, 1912-2008.

The Walter J. Ong Manuscript Collection documents the thought and work of one of the most important intellectuals and scholars of the 20th century. In this collection, one will find Father Ong's scholarship, academic files, personal correspondence, class and lecture notes, research materials, and other related items. Included in the collection are such items as a number of Ong's unpublished articles and lectures, library cards from libraries he used around the world, souvenirs from his trip to the 1929 Boy Scout World Jamboree, and correspondence with family, friends, and colleagues. A detailed scope and content note for each of the series is available in the collection finding aid. The first three series in the collection, Scholarship, General Files, and Index Card and Ephemera Files, will probably be of the most interest to research scholars. In addition to being a meticulously organized person, Father Ong was very much aware that he was recognized as an outstanding scholar with an international reputation, and he believed that other scholars would be interested in reviewing and studying the material he produced or collected throughout his career. The contents of this collection, and the way that it is arranged, reflects this organization and self awareness.

John Taggart Papers, 1962-2002

Title: John Taggart Papers, 1962-2002

Papers of John Taggart, a contemporary American poet known for his formal and prosodic innovations. In addition to his long career as a professor at Shippensburg State University, Taggart has been involved in supporting literary communities and has written about key artistic and literary figures, in addition to producing his own creative work. The collection contains manuscripts and typescripts of Taggart's published and unpublished poetry, juvenilia from the 1960s and 70s, and fiction. The collection also contains many of his personal journals, notebooks, and loose notecards, as well as ongoing correspondence with writers, artists, and editors such as Theodore Enslin and Susan Howe. Taggart's work on translations of Sappho, Aeschylus, and Francis Ponge is also included. His nonfiction work consists mostly of essays, both published and unpublished, devoted to the work of individual writers and artists, such as George Oppen and Edward Hopper, as well as collective movements such as the Objectivist poets. Of note are included drafts of his articles "Walk Out: Rereading George Oppen" (CHICAGO REVIEW, 1998) and "George Oppen: One Line" (FLASHPOINT, 2002). The collection represents Taggart's ongoing poetic contributions, such as the collections DODEKA, CROSSES, WHEN THE SAINTS, and, most recently, PASTORELLES, as well as his lengthy continued correspondence with literary figures. Also of note are miscellaneous materials such as three-dimensional paper constructions as well as course materials related to his long tenure as a professor.
