The papers consist of various letters, documents, and manuscripts, either written by or signed by Adams, or both, as well as an engraved portrait of Adams. Most of the items date from before or after Adams's presidency, with a number of the items dating from his years as Secretary of State. The collection consists of two manuscripts, an Address to his "Friends and fellow citizens of the County of Norfolk," Massachusetts, dated October 24, 1843, and an Address at the laying of the cornerstone of the Cincinnati Observatory, dated 1848; seven documents, including a passport for Joseph Heatly Dulles, dated April 6, 1822, a copyright claim of William B. Fowle, dated February 28, 1823, and one of John Trumbull, dated 1820, a letter of patent, dated April 11, 1825, and signed also by Henry Clay and William Wirt, a sailing permit to Hiram Covele, commander of the Alliance, dated October 25, 1828, and signed also by Henry Clay, notes on the Josiah Hooker Trust, dated October 17, 1831, and two resolutions concerning slavery, dated 1844; 21 letters, mostly ALSs, with some LSs and ALs, dating from 1796-1843; and a signed engraved portrait. Correspondents include Charles Francis Adams, John Quincy Adams's son, Barbara O'Sullivan Addicks, Messrs. Baring Brothers & Company, Joseph Blunt, Tristram Burges, Richard Forrest, Henry Gassett, Rufus King, General Lafayette, and his son, George Washington Lafayette, Walter Leake, Govenor of Mississippi, Charles Edward Lester, Jan Luzac, Thomas McKean Thompson McKennan, Chandler Price, Thomas J. Rogers, Samuel Sprigg, Smith Thompson, and John Trumbull.

Business papers of textile industry merchant and investor Amos Adams Lawrence, 1803-87, includes correspondence, receipts, accounts, and financial statements for his textile investment firm of Mason and Lawrence. Also includes correspondence and other papers regarding the acquisition of land for Lawrence College located in Appleton, Wisc. and Ipswich Mills in Ipswich, Mass. There are a number of letters sent to Lawrence from family members during the last few years of his life discussing family news and activities. Family correspondents include Lawrence Brooks, Amory Appleton Lawrence, Hetty Sullivan Lawrence Cunningham, Robert Means Lawrence, and fellow Harvard classmate Henry Gassett.

The Sparks collection consists of original and transcribed historical documents and correspondence, chiefly concerning the American colonies and the original thirteen states, collected or transcribed beginning in 1819 by Jared Sparks. The collection includes the papers of Sir Francis Bernard and George Chalmers, letters of Benjamin Franklin, Alexander Hamilton, the Marquis de Lafayette, and George Washington, the journals of Thomas Ainslie, the Board of Trade, the New York Provincial Congress and Conventions, as well as the papers and records from state public offices, among many others. The Sparks collection also contains his own historical essays and compositions, published articles, letter books, diaries, account books related to his college days, professional research, and material documenting his tenure as College president.

Richardson, Benjamin Parker, 1802-1870. Papers, 1814-1857.

Title: Papers, 1814-1857.

This chronologically arranged collection includes receipts for books purchased and bound, as well as for clothing and hotel expenses. There is also incoming correspondence, primarily relating to Richardson's part in the preparation of various religious publications, such as the Christian Witness and the Protestant Churchman. Subscription lists and distribution plans are also discussed. There are communications from Henry Gassett (1818-1886) which request Richardson to provide him with House documents and information concerning the Freemason and Antimasonic movements. The collection also includes various receipts, church pew assessments, club membership cards, and tax records of Benjamin Parker Richardson's mother, Rebecca Brackett Richardson (1764-1843), and his brothers, Jeffrey (1789-1879) and James Brackett Richardson (1793-1875). The three Richardson brothers were in partnership as iron merchants on Central Wharf, Boston, for many years.

Correspondence on the subjects of antislavery and colonization in Liberia, plans for a mental hospital, and on personal affairs. Also includes manuscripts relating to the Maryland State and Pennsylvania Colonization Societies and the Sheppard Asylum, material on the libel trial of William Lloyd Garrison, and other papers. Of particular note is the correspondence of Moses Sheppard with Henry Gassett of Boston on Freemasonry and with Benjamin F. Taylor of Loudon Co., Virginia, on anti-slavery issues and the "spiritual tyranny" of the Cathoic Church. Other correspondents include Benjamin Hallowell, John Jackson, Joshua Dungan, Thomas Ellicott, Dr. Nathan Shoemaker, Elisha Tyson, and many others. Collection also includes a list of applicants for Liberia and correspondence from Joshua H. Stewart in Africa and Samuel Ford McGill, a Liberian physician who was sponsored by Sheppard.
