Samuel Francis Du Pont's log books include accounts of his cruises on the U.S.S. FRANKLIN (1817-18), ERIE (1818-20), CONSTITUTION (1821-22), CONGRESS (1822-23, 1845-46), NORTH CAROLINA (1825-27), OHIO (1838-41), PERRY (1843-44), CYANE (1846-48), and MINNESOTA (1857-59). A letter book of Richard B. Jones, U.S. Consul at Tripoli (1814-19), describes the maintenance of the diplomatic post and negotiations between the United States and Britain over rival claims and war prizes.

Flirt, U.S.S. John Adams, and the U.S.S. North Carolina; in Washington, D.C., where he helped in the preparation of Wilkes' narrative of the expedition; and on the U.S.S. Ohio during the War with Mexico in the siege of Vera Cruz, and later, when he escorted the American minister to Brazil and joined the Pacific Squadron. Topics include naval matters, places of interest, family affairs, and speculative ventures in Lake Superior mining and in California land.

The collection contains 69 letters (primarily between members of the Brinley family and Edward Brinley, Jr.), 18 documents (largely relating the career of Edward Brinley, Jr.), a journal kept by Brinley on board the USS North Carolina, Oct. 1840-May. 1841, and the U.S.S. Delaware from Dec. 1843-Mar. 1844, and a portable wooden writing desk owned by Brinley. The early correspondence deals with Edward's childhood and education, his first naval appointment aboard the U.S.S. North Carolina including details about the various ports-of-call. His letters of the 1844-1845 period deal with his service on the U.S.S. Falmouth in the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean during the prelude to the U.S.-Mexican War. Edward's letters of the 1846-1850 period deal with his service aboard the U.S.S. Preble during its cruise of the Pacific. Brinley's comments on the economic, ecological, and political phenomenon of the Pacific throughout these letters. The California gold rush, U.S. economic colonialism in present-day Hawaii, U.S. whaling in the Pacific, and the Chinese Opium trade are among the issues extensively discussed. His letters of 1856 were written during his service on the USS Potomac in the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean. They include discussions of the "filibusterer" William Walker's short-lived takeover of Nicaragua. The letters of Francis W. Brinley, Edward, Jr.'s most frequent correspondent, are dominated by family news and fatherly advice regarding the merits of hard work and respect for authority. Francis's letters do contain some interesting portraits of quotidian life as a businessman in Perth Amboy, NJ, however. The two letters of Thomas Brinley paint a dismal picture of his failed attempt at making a fortune in 1850s California. The remainder of the correspondence relates primarily to the everyday affairs of the Brinley family. The manuscripts and documents section contains primarily Federal and New Jersey government documents relating to the military and civil service of Edward Brinley, Jr., as well as various documents relating to Andrewetta Brinley's widow's pension. The journal of Edward Brinley, Jr. (HM 74073) contains details of nautical weather, crew discipline, and ship maintenance aboard the U.S.S. North Carolina during its stay in New York Harbor. The journal of the U.S.S. Delaware contained therein details the same during that vessel's cruise of the Mediterranean and trans-Atlantic journey back to Norfolk, VA. The back of the folio has a chart relating to nautical navigation. The final folder in the collection contains two documents included with the collection at the time of accession - one a family tree of the family of Francis W. Brinley (of unknown provenance) and an excerpt from the catalog of Michael Brown Rare Books that contains transcriptions of large sections of the letters of Edward Brinley, Jr. The collection also includes the portable wooden writing desk of Edward Brinley, Jr., which contains writing and nautical instruments, as well as a newspaper clipping which details how to make a homemade barometer.

Thomas Jefferson Boyce kept this journal from 1829-1852, with bulk dates of 1829-1839, during his time of service aboard the Peacock, St. Louis, and North Carolina. The journal has daily entries noting the weather, who came aboard the ship, which ships were spotted, destinations, and tasks performed. Since Boyce was a sail maker he spent most of his time repairing sails and awnings. A printed copy of ''The Complaint and Petition of Thomas Jefferson Boyce for Twenty Years a Sail Maker in the United States Navy'' (Newark, NJ, 1852), which has an introduction by his friend Joseph C. Hornblower, is bound into the journal. This complaint documents Boyce's troubles with the commander of the Navy Yard in New York City and pleads with the government to review his case and reinstate him.

This collection contains more than seventy volumes of records pertaining to John Rodgers's naval career, including correspondence, general orders, requisition books, and ships' logs. Similar records highlight the careers of Commodore Matthew C. Perry, Rear Admiral John Rodgers, Rear Admiral Frederick Rodgers, Rear Admiral John Augustus Rodgers, Captain George Washington Rodgers, Commodore John D. Henley, naval Purser Henry Denison, and Midshipman Frederick Rodgers. Civil Engineer and Civil War Colonel Robert Smith Rodgers is represented by diaries, accounts, and correspondence. A handful of personal papers concern other members of the extended Rodgers family, including Minerva (Denison) Rodgers, Sarah (Perry) Rodgers, Julia (Slidell) Rodgers, John Slidell, Jane (Slidell) Perry, and Louisa Rodgers.

The Samuel Francis Du Pont Papers include correspondence with more than 1,500 individuals. There is a good deal of official and semi-official correspondence describing naval practices and policies as well as Du Pont's career. Of particular interest are letters from British diplomats and naval officers during the 1840s and 50s describing the operations of the British Navy. Letters received from William B. Reed, American minister to China, document the negotiations leading up to the Treaty of Tientsin which opened up China to western trade. Letters from American missionaries Samuel Wells and William and Edward Syle describe the missionary movement in China and efforts to eradicate the opium trade. The files also contain correspondence reflecting Du Pont's role in the Naval Efficiency Board and the reform movement which sought to modernize the navy as it moved into the age of steam.
