Correspondence, 51 letters to his wife, 21 February 1864-17 May 1865. Letter sent from New Orleans, LA, report on conditions in camp, Fort Pillow Massacre, on fellow army recruits and commentary on New Bedford activities; reports on conditions in the Navy, Battle of Mobile Bay and the southern blockade. Also voices opinion on the U.S. Navy, his denial of bounty monies for signing on and then transferring to the Navy and other clashes with the confederates.

USS Hartford, a sloop-of-war, was first commissioned in 1859. She was a part of the East India Squadron, was David Farragut's flagship during the Civil War, and was Stephen B. Timothy Murphy, a blacksmith from New Bedford, MA, was born in Iceland in 1829. He joined the 4th Massachusetts Volunteer Cavalry in February 1864. He transferred to the U.S. Navy in July 1864 as an ordinary seaman. He served the on the North Carolina, Hartford and Princeton and saw action at the Battle of Mobile Bay.
