Mary Lyon, educator and founder of Mount Holyoke Female Seminary (now Mount Holyoke College), was born on February 28, 1797, in Buckland, Massachusetts. Her parents were Aaron Lyon, a farmer, and Jemima Shepard Lyon. After her father's death in 1802 and her mother's remarriage 1810, Lyon remained on the family farm as a housekeeper for her brother. She started teaching in 1814 and continued her own education by attending Sanderson Academy in Ashfield, Massachusetts, Amherst (Massachusetts) Academy, and Byfield (Massachusetts) Seminary. She opened the Buckland (Massachusetts) Female School in 1824 and taught the summer term classes at Adams Female Academy in Derry (now East Derry), New Hampshire with Zilpah Grant. In 1828, she began teaching full time at Ipswich (Massachusetts) Female Seminary. During this period, she also attended lectures at Amherst College and spent a few weeks studying at what is now Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. In 1832, she began developing plans for a new school for adult women that would own its own property and not be a for-profit venture. She spent the summer of 1833 traveling through Pennsylvania and New York State to Detroit, Michigan purchasing scientific equipment for Ipswich Seminary and visiting schools and colleges. She resigned from the Ipswich school in 1834, returning later to serve as acting principal during Grant's temporary absence, and assisted with the planning of Wheaton Female Seminary (now Wheaton College) in Norton, Massachusetts. With the help of male advisers she began raising funds for a school that was chartered on February 11, 1836 as Mount Holyoke Female Seminary in South Hadley, Massachusetts. Mount Holyoke opened on November 8, 1837 and Lyon served as principal for almost twelve years. She also taught chemistry classes and organized the domestic work system by which students and teachers took care of cooking and housekeeping chores in order to avoid the expense of hiring paid staff. Lyon died of erysipelas, an acute streptococcus disease of the skin and subcutaneous tissue, on March 5, 1849 and is buried on the Mount Holyoke grounds.

Papers ca. 1832-1841 1838-1840.
The Lucy T. Goodale papers consist of correspondence (original manuscripts or typescript copies); notebooks and other writings; drawings and paintings; memorabilia; and biographical and genealogical information. Most of this material reflects Goodale's activities as a student at Mount Holyoke Female Seminary from 1838-1840. In letters written to family members, she discusses her studies (especially in the sciences), domestic work, schedule, regulations and religious life at the school, and the Seminary Building. She frequently mentions Mary Lyon, describes events such as the Fourth of July celebration in 1838, discusses her health and that of other members of the community, and refers to slavery and other contemporary issues. Her notebooks contain notes for lectures concerning chemistry, geology and other sciences and "Topics in Bible Lessons," as well as detailed descriptions of excursions to Deerfield, Mt. Holyoke (the mountain) and a button factory in South Hadley. Her writings also include a composition and poem and notes on her daily schedule. Goodale's drawings consist of floor plans for the cellar and first floor of the Seminary Building and a variety of other works (some of them in color), including numerous stencilled and theorem paintings.

Title:
Papers, 1845-1846.
The papers of Lucy P. Putnam contain a letter and ten compositions and poems, all written during her year as a student at Mount Holyoke Female Seminary, 1845-1846. The letter, addressed to Mr. and Mrs. Nathaniel Clarke, primarily discusses her travel to Mount Holyoke Female Seminary from New Hampshire and her reaction to her first three weeks at the school. Besides writing about her homesickness, Putnam describes her room in the Seminary Building, the furnishings, the rules, her domestic work, examinations, her schedule, the food, and Mary Lyon. There are six compositions as well as four poems. Two of the compositions, "A Visit to the Insane Asylum," (which describes an attempt to visit an insane asylum in Concord, New Hampshire) and "Character of Queen Esther", are probably creative pieces. The other compositions are entitled "Great Effects from Small Causes," "Female Education," "Early Rising," and "Uncertainty of Earthly Things." The poems are entitled "One Composition," "The Star of Bethlehem," "My Home," and "My Mother."

Title:
Records, 1817-1894.
Printed material (including circulars and catalogues), legal documents, financial records, notebooks, and miscellaneous records. The school opened Dec. 6, 1814, and incorporated Feb. 13, 1816, to provide (for children of both sexes) education at a level preparatory for collegiate instruction. Amherst Academy was the parent institution of Amherst College; the same men served as founders and trustees of both. Notebooks include Noah Webster's notes for the history of Amherst Academy and Amherst College, and records of two student organizations, the Franklin Society and the Platonic Society. The Charity Fund (also known as the Charitable Fund), established by the Trustees of the Academy in 1818 for the " ... education of indigent young men ... for the Christian ministry," provided the financial support for The Collegiate Institution in Amherst (later Amherst College) as a separate and distinct institution. Among those who attended were Mary Lyon, founder of Mount Holyoke College; Emily Dickinson; and Helen Hunt Jackson. Amherst Academy closed in 1861, and the site was sold to the town of Amherst, which erected the Amity Street public school on it.

Title:
Papers, ca. 1821-1903.
The Eunice C. Cowles Papers include correspondence, writings, biographical information, Caldwell and Cowles family papers, and a photograph. Much of this material concerns Cowles' connections to Mount Holyoke Female Seminary and to Ipswich Female Seminary, where she spent most of her career. The correspondence, dating from 1833 to 1888, includes letters by and to Cowles. Some early letters in the collection are addressed to friends and family members. Other letters concern Mount Holyoke Female Seminary at its inception, including a March 8, 1838 letter entitled "Washing Day at Mount Holyoke Seminary" that describes the students' weekly cleaning routine. Later letters by Cowles are more general in nature and are addressed mainly to friends. Also included are letters written by Mary Lyon to Cowles. One letter, dated July 3, 1836, concerns Cowles' appointment as Associate Principal at Mount Holyoke. Another, dated November 29, 1855, concerns a student at Ipswich Female Seminary. The writings include two journals that Cowles kept while she was a student at Ipswich Female Seminary 1831-1832. One describes her academic routine and makes reference to Mary Lyon, her teacher at Ipswich. The other journal contains Bible passages. Also included in the writings is a pamphlet by Cowles entitled "Our Maidens," from a lecture she delivered in 1879 at a meeting of the Women's Board of Missions in Boston, Massachusetts. The pamphlet discusses the training of women missionaries and Mary Lyon's role in this field. Also included are documents written by Mary Lyon but apparently copied by Cowles. These documents include spiritual writings, letters, a ledger of cash received from Mount Holyoke for furniture, and some compositions on education. The biographical information consists of an obituary and a biographical note, ca. 1903. The family papers include a notification, dated July 30, 1835, of the drowning death of Cowles' father Captain John Caldwell in the Kennebec River. The series also includes two receipts belonging to Cowles' husband, John Cowles, as well as a short note from Mary Lyon to Cowles' mother, Eunice Caldwell. The photograph is a formal portrait of Cowles, possibly dating from the 1850's; it appears to be a copy of a photograph that was published in a newspaper or magazine.

These papers consist of correspondence, account books, writings, diaries, a notebook, Treasurer's representative records, documents about Peterson Lodge, memorabilia, family biographical information, and photographs. Most of the papers relate to her activities as a student, librarian, representative of the Seminary's Treasurer, and retired faculty member at Mount Holyoke Female Seminary and College. In letters written to her father and brother during her student years (1850-1852), she discusses her academic, religious, and social life; domestic work; calisthenics; food; the library; the Seminary Building and its furnishings; and Thanksgiving in 1850. She also makes frequent references to her health and to that of others and describes the deaths of students Sophia Allen and Abbie Nims. She discusses aspects of the curriculum including a growing enthusiasm for the study of zoology and the effect of Mount Holyoke's new library on the teaching of literature. A Sept. 1897 letter that she had written as a representative of the faculty thanks A. Lyman Williston and his wife for their help in rebuilding after the fire that destroyed the Seminary Building in 1896. Correspondence also includes a May 1903 letter and tribute from Susan B. Anthony that accompanied a book sent to the College library in memory of Mary Perkins. Letters to and from Edward Smith of Enfield, Mass. discuss his efforts to raise money for the school's education fund and his payment of the tuition for two students; his letters also includes reminiscences of Mary Lyon. There are Bible study notes covering 15 years. Nutting's account books (1859-1906) record her income and expenses, including charitable contributions made during the Civil War. Papers, 1838-1907 1844-1864.
These Papers consist of journals, correspondence, notebooks, compositions, biographical information, a diploma, and a photograph. Most of this material relates to her years as a student at Mount Holyoke Female Seminary, 1844-1846, including a letter she wrote on March 22, 1844, and journals, 1844-1845. In these documents Holden discusses her course work, schedule, roommates, religious life, the school's interest in the financial support of missionaries, the daily walking requirement, a Mountain Day trip in 1845, Mary Lyon, her room, and caring for ill students. Three compositions (1845-1846) concern the story of Pocahontas, the life and death of one of Holden's friends, and the power of memory and remembrance. The notebooks contain calisthenic exercises, lists of plants that were probably collected for a botany class, and several original poems and songs written by Mount Holyoke students, ca. 1840-1846, that are examples of what has come to be known as Seminary Literature. The notebook of these writings also includes poems and songs dating 1838-ca. 1843 and written by students in the "High school" in Medway, Mass. that Holden attended before coming to Mount Holyoke. This collection also includes twelve letters dated 1847-1866. One letter was written by Holden to her mother, the others were written to Holden by her family and friends, including a Mount Holyoke classmate, Mary Susan Rice. These letters chiefly discuss news of family and friends, child care, death, national events, and religion. Of particular note is an Aug. 1866 letter from Rice, in which she describes her work as a teacher and missionary at the Fiske Seminary in Orumiyeh, Persia. Other items in the collection consist of Holden's Mount Holyoke diploma, 1846; a biographical note, ca. 1907; and a formal photograph, ca. 1860.

Curtis papers, 1838-1849, ca. 1900.
The Lucy M. Curtis papers consist of correspondence, a commonplace book, and a photograph. Most of this material relates to the years of her association with Mount Holyoke Female Seminary, 1838-1849. There are eight letters in the collection written between 1842 and 1849. In her six letters to Mrs. Hannah Kingsbury Porter (wife of Mount Holyoke trustee Andrew Porter), Curtis mentions the death of student Sarah Wingate in 1849 and describes in detail the illness of Mary Lyon in the same year. The collection also contains a letter written to Lyon discussing the merits of a potential student for the Seminary. A later letter to Lyon expresses her admiration and affection for Miss Lyon. The letters contain indications of Curtis' religious beliefs. The commonplace book contains original compositions and copied articles by Mount Holyoke students from the classes of 1838 to 1849, part of writings at the school known as "Seminary Literature". The biographical information includes a note by Anna C. Edwards (Mount Holyoke Class of 1859) concerning Curtis' life, probably dating from ca. 1900. The collection also contains a photograph of Curtis probably taken while she was at Mount Holyoke.

Soule, Annah May, 1861-1905. Soule papers, 1896-1907.
Title:
Soule papers, 1896-1907.
The Annah May Soule papers consist of papers by Mount Holyoke students, Soule's writing and research notes, her correspondence, memorabilia, bibliographical information, and photographs. The materials reflect her work as a professor as well as her outside professional interests. The student papers, ca. 1897-1904, deal with the history of New England, particularly Massachusetts, as well as broader social and political issues. Titles include "What the Founding of Mount Holyoke Seminary did for the Cause of Woman's Higher Education", "A History of the Town Meeting of South Hadley, Mass", and "The Relation of Slavery to Party Platforms". Soule's writings and research (1900-1904) include articles about Mount Holyoke's Department of Constitutional History and Political Economy, and how to incorporate new history requirements into a curriculum; replies to a questionnaire that Soule sent out in 1903 regarding a physical education requirement for college entrance and graduation; a lecture on the "Relation of the School and College to Public Health"; and a paper comparing Mary Lyon to Emerson. The correspondence (ca. 1897-1904) includes two 1900 letters from Susan B. Anthony and letters from principals of area high schools responding to her apparent inquiry as to how the subject of history is taught. Memorabilia includes documents written by students living in Safford Hall, dating from the spring of 1902. The memorabilia also contains a letter written after Soule's death by her mother to "Mrs. Lane" (possibly Clara E. Lane, the Superintendent of Domestic Department at Mount Holyoke from 1887-1891) commenting on the College's domestic work system. Biographical information consists of Soule's obituary and a program from her memorial service at Mount Holyoke.

Cowles, Eunice C. (Eunice Caldwell), 1811-1903. Papers, ca. 1821-1903.
Title:
Papers, ca.

Emily Dickinson Collection, 1847- 1924-
Title:
Emily Dickinson Collection, 1847- 1924-
The Emily Dickinson Collection contains correspondence, a collection of poems, subject files, writings about Dickinson, and reproductions of photographs and other images. The bulk of this collection consists of secondary sources concerning Emily Dickinson and dating from 1924 to the present. Most of this material is written in the English language; the collection also includes writings in Japanese and other languages. Of particular note is a letter that Dickinson wrote on November 6, 1847, while she was a student at Mount Holyoke Female Seminary. The letter discusses her examinations and studies, Mary Lyon and the teachers, her schedule and domestic work, and the food at the school. There are also published copies of other letters that Dickinson wrote while at Mount Holyoke in 1847-1848. The collection of poems, published in 1988, contains some of Dickinson's works translated into the Estonian language. The subject files include documents concerning the Emily Dickinson International Society, the Emily Dickinson postage stamp, and films, music, novels, plays, and poems relating to Dickinson. The writings about Dickinson consist of books, articles, newspaper clippings, and published and unpublished papers. These writings discuss a wide variety of topics, including Dickinson's time at Mount Holyoke, her health, forgeries of her poems, and the history of the one known daguerreotype of her. Several clippings also relate to the celebration at Mount Holyoke College commemorating the 150th anniversary of her birth in 1980. The reproductions of photographs and other images include a print of the 1847 daguerreotype of Dickinson, copies of portraits based on thatdaguerreotype and on an 1840 portrait of Dickinson and her siblings, and a reproduction of an 1848 silhouette of Dickinson and her family.

Hooker papers, 1873-1942 (bulk 1884-1927).
The Henrietta Edgecomb Hooker Papers consist of correspondence, writings, magazine and newspaper articles, and photographs. The materials document her experiences as a botany professor at Mount Holyoke College, her hobby of raising and showing Buff Orpington chickens, and her interests in botany. Included is information concerning a hiking tour of Western Massachusetts for Mount Holyoke College students which was led by Hooker. Of note are letters in which Hooker discusses the destruction of Mount Holyoke's Seminary Building by fire in 1896. There is also an article about the history of Mount Holyoke College and the school's need for funds in the aftermath of the fire. Also, in letters written to Mount Holyoke College president Mary Woolley, Hooker states her vision of the history and future of Mount Holyoke College Botany Department. Some letters and writings describe the lives and work of Mary Lyon, Mount Holyoke College president Elizabeth Storrs Mead, and botany professor Lydia W. Shattuck. Hooker, Henrietta Edgecomb, 1851-1929; botanist and college teacher. Mount Holyoke Female Seminary graduate, 1873. Mount Holyoke College faculty member, 1873-1908.
