Mary Lyon, educator and founder of Mount Holyoke Female Seminary (now Mount Holyoke College), was born on February 28, 1797, in Buckland, Massachusetts. Her parents were Aaron Lyon, a farmer, and Jemima Shepard Lyon. After her father's death in 1802 and her mother's remarriage 1810, Lyon remained on the family farm as a housekeeper for her brother. Sarah Deborah Locke was born on May 23, 1836 in Ashburnham, Massachusetts to William and Marinda Adams Locke. She graduated from Mount Holyoke Seminary in 1859, and taught there until 1868. On April 7, 1868 she married Reverend John Murdock Stow. He died in 1877, and Sarah Stowe returned to Mount Holyoke in 1878 to teach. She retired in 1889.
