Title: Papers, c. 1800-c. 1900.

This collection consists primarily of the correspondence, diaries, and papers of these four Cheevers. Much of the correspondence is between family members, including letters to and from Charlotte Cheever, a pious matriarch. The majority of the items were generated by George Barrell Cheever, the sibling who achieved the greatest prominence throughout his controversial career. There are many letters between George and his mother Charlotte, George and his sister Elizabeth, and letters from George to his wife Elizabeth Hoppin Wetmore Cheever (d. 1886). There is also much correspondence to him from members of his congregations and from persons active in the myriad causes for which he worked: abolitionism, temperance reform, nativism, and defence of capital punishment. For many years Cheever wrote for the Independent and various newspapers, and this collection includes copies of his articles as well as clippings of articles about him from both British and American newspapers. There are originals, drafts, and copies of poems by Cheever, and there are miscellaneous legal documents, sermons, lectures, and notes. Elizabeth Washburn devoted herself to the care of her mother and service of her brothers until her marriage in 1858 to the Worcester industrialist Ichabod Washburn. Washburn died in 1868 leaving a very large estate which generated several legal fights, and there is some material in this collection dealing with those problems. Most of Elizabeth's correspondence is to and from family members, including a large network of cousins, aunts, and uncles. Like the rest of her family, she was zealously religious and her letters and journals reflect unceasing concern for the spiritual health of herself and family members. Her letters, descriptive and informative, are a good source for the daily events of the family. Like his older brother George, Henry was educated at Bowdoin College and Andover Theological Seminary and was ordained to the Congregational ministry. As a young man he travelled with his brother Nathaniel (whose health was precarious) and wrote articles for the New York Evangelist describing the trips. His clerical career was frequently affected by dissension within the pastorates he held in New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, and Worcester, Mass. He was a prohibitionist, advocate of women's rights, and early supporter of the liberal movement in the Congregational Church. Nathaniel Cheever spent most of his life trying to stay alive by travelling and taking long sea voyages. The collection includes journals he kept when 13 years old and correspondence while he was away from home. The collection also contains (in box #25) a "commonplace book," 1820-1823, kept by Mary Pindar Cheever (1811- ), possibly in Danvers, Mass. Mary Pindar Cheever copied into the book various poems, letters, and newspaper articles which interested her. Several friends also wrote lengthy poems into her book. The titles include "Autumn flowers," "The Clift," and "The burial of the young."

Cheever-Wheeler Family, Papers, 1773-1979

Title: Cheever-Wheeler Family, Papers, 1773-1979

This collection represents four generations of the Cheever family of Hallowell, Me., and Worcester, Mass., and the Wheeler family of Lincoln and Worcester, Mass. Included are incoming and outgoing correspondence of thirty-one family members, as well as diaries, account books, business papers, bills and receipts, deeds, bank books, genealogical material, library catalogues, sermons, rough drafts of chapters, penmanship books, newsclippings, speeches and essays, and poetry. The letters of Rev. George B. Cheever and Rev. Henry T. Cheever deal with their pastoral activity, problems with their parishes due to their involvement with controversial reform movements, and contacts with abolitionist leaders such as Charles Sumner (1811-1874) and Wendell Phillips (1811-1884) in 1860, and the Tappan brothers. Henry T. Cheever kept diaries and wrote letters concerning his studies at Bowdoin College and his trips to Spain in the 1830s and Hawaii in the 1840s, and received several letters from missionaries, e.g., Elias Bond (1813-1896), and Hawaiian students. There are also letters of Henry's wife, Jane T. Cheever. He letters refer to social activities in Jewett City, Conn., and Worcester, Mass., and the rearing of her daughters. The collection also contains voluminous correspondence of Henry and Jane's four daughters: Charlotte Barrell Cheever Tucker, Ellen Tyler Cheever Rockwood, Elizabeth Bancroft Cheever Wheeler, and Louisa Sewall Cheever. All four women wrote to one another and to firiends and relatives concerning their social and educational activities at Smith College during the late 1870s and early 1880s, their travels in Europe, and their many social activities in which they engaged in Worcester (Charlotte and Ellen live principally with their aunt, Elizabeth Washburn), especially the courtships of the three elder daughters. Ellen Rockwood generated correspondence with various genealogists, while her mother-in-law, Caroline Washburn Rockwood (1844-1923), wrote of her controversial decisions to join the Christian Science religion and to pursue a music-teaching career in the South during the early 1900s. The Wheeler family correspondence is primarily a record of life in Lincoln and Worcester during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Dr. Leonard Wheeler's correspondence includes many letters concerning his medical studies in Germany and Austria in the 1870s, while Thomas B. Wheeler wrote of his efforts to establish a grain company in Troy, Ohio, in the late 1860s, and his earlier venture as a cotton merchant in the South. Other Wheeler letters recorded social activities, family illnesses, scandals, marriages, and deaths. The collection also contains correspondence of Leonard and Elizabeth's four children: Dr. Bancroft Cheever Wheeler, Leonard Wheeler, Jr., Eunice Wheeler, and Nathaniel Wheeler. The four wrote to one another, their parents, and other relatives and friends concerning their social activities and life at their respective schools and colleges. Bancroft and Leonard, Jr. attended Phillips Exeter Academy in Exeter, N.H., and Harvard University, Eunice attended Smith College, and Nathaniel was a graduate of the Middlesex School in Concord, Mass., and Harvard. They also wrote of their music lessons, their travels in Europe and their summers at the Jonathan Sayward house in York, Me. Leonard, Jr., an attorney, was a colonel with the Army in Washington during World War II and later participated in the prosecution of the Nuremberg Trials. He and his wife, Cornelia Balch Wheeler (1909- ), wrote of this and of life in general in Alexandria, Va., during the war. Nathaniel served in the Pacific during World War II and wrote many letters to his mother and sister during his tour of duty. The remainder of the collection consists of letters from friends and relatives of the Cheevers and Wheelers. There are folders representing forty-one correspondents, as well as other letters grouped generally in the incoming correspondence folders. Many letters are addressed to Henry T. Cheever by ministerial colleagues and concern political and religious issues, e.g., Henry Sibree ( - ) of New York City wrote regarding the conflicts of Henry Cheever's brother, George, with his parishioners. The volumes include diaries and travel journals and accounts of household expenses of many of the principal family correspondents. Among the material in the boxes are legal documents, church business papers, newsclippings of or concerning family members or political issues, school report cards, bills and receipts, speeches and addresses written mainly by Henry T. Cheever, rough drafts of his chapters, biographical and genealogical data, and diplomas.

Records of predecessor firms include those of the Washburn and Moen Manufacturing Company, Worcester, Mass. (1868-1899) whose records comprise about half of the total collection. The material on this company includes stock certificate stubs, stock ledger, directors' records (1868-1886), bill books, letter books (1890-1902), miscellaneous volumes and 3 boxes of folders. There is considerable material on the patent suits of the 1880's and 1890's, and the consolidation of the company into one of the largest in the field of wire making. Records of Washburn and Moen's predecessors include account books of Washburn and Goddard (1822-1848), Ichabod Washburn (1835-1842), I. and C. Washburn (1842-1849), I. Washburn and Company (1850-1861), and I Washburn and Moen (1861-1865). Also includes records of Shoenberger, Shoenberger and Blair, Pittsburgh, Pa. (1860-1892); Crown Point Iron Company, Crown Point, N.Y. (1872-1897); Worcester Wire Company, Worcester, Mass. (1877-1899); American Wire Company, Cleveland, Ohio (1882-1898); B.W. Company, Worcester, Mass. (1886-1890); the Cleveland Rolling Mill Railroad Company, Cleveland (1874-1902); and scattered records of the American Steel and Wire Company (1899-1910). Also included in the collection is a large amount of material on the early days of wire making assembled by the American Steel and Wire Company's Industrial Museum. Of particular interest are the biographical folders relating to men prominent in the industry, the company histories, and the descriptions of special phases of wire making. Numerous pictures accompanied the Museum's collection; these have been removed from frames and places in appropriate categories.

The records of the Evangelical City Missionary Society, c. 1849, contain bylaws, subscription lists, and brief minutes of organizational meetings. The latter refer to elections of officers, treasurer's reports, and a statement of purpose. There is also an unrelated three-page list of bylaws of a Worcester Club Society, with appointments of officers for 1829, 1831, and 1836. The organization appears to have been a women's club.

This extensive collection concerns the Salisbury family whose members lived in Boston and Worcester, Mass., during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Important family figures represented in this collection are Nicholas Salisbury, his wife Martha Saunders Salisbury, and their two sons Samuel I and Stephen I; Stephen I's wife Elizabeth Tuckerman Salisbury and their son Stephen Salisbury II; Stephen Salisbury II's wife Rebekah Scott Dean Salisbury and their son Stephen Salisbury III, Stephen II's second wife Nancy Hoard Lincoln Salisbury, and Stephen II's third wife Mary Grosvenor Bangs Salisbury. There is also substantial material from members of the extended family, including Daniel Waldo (1724-1808), Samuel Barrett (1738-1798), and Benjamin Greene (1715-1776), brothers-in-law of Samuel Salisbury I and Stephen Salisbury I; Edward Tuckerman II (1775-1843), George Washington Tuckerman (1775?-1837), and Gustavus Tuckerman I (1785-1860), brothers of Elizabeth Tuckerman Salisbury; Waldo Flint (1794-1879) and his wife Catharine Dean Flint (1802-1869), sister of Rebekah Scott Dean Salisbury; and Georgianna DeVillers Lincoln (1840-1861), daughter of Nancy Hoard Lincoln Salisbury. There are also bills, receipts, and business correspondence between him and his customers and wholesalers in England. There is considerable business and family correspondence with his brother Stephen Salisbury I which offers extensive political, financial, religious, and social commentary. Business and family correspondence with his brothers-in-law, the merchants Daniel Waldo, Samuel Barrett, and Benjamin Greene, is also included. There are also two journals, 1769-1775, which Samuel I kept while on a tour of England. The papers of Stephen Salisbury I include powers of attorney, indentures, deeds (including the deed for the Salisbury farm from John Hancock), and other legal documents. The business papers include orders, receipts, and requests for loans from customers. There is also correspondence to wholesalers in England and other merchants and manufacturers in America. There is extensive correspondence with his brother Samuel I, including requests for goods, money, advice, and information, as well as family correspondence and commentary on political and social developments before, during, and after the American Revolution. There is business and family correspondence with his brothers-in-law, the merchants Daniel Waldo, Samuel Barrett, Benjamin Greene, and Edward Tuckerman II. There is also business correspondence with Josiah Salisbury II (1781-1826) and Cleveland and Fling Company who managed Stephen I's investments. Family correspondence includes that with his wife Elizabeth Tuckerman Salisbury and her brothers Henry Harris Tuckerman (1783-1860), George Washington Tuckerman, and Gustavus Tuckerman I. Correspondence with his son Stephen Salisbury II especially concerned Stephen II's education at Leicester Academy, and at Harvard College. Furthermore, there are ledgers, account books, and inventory books dated 1757-1814 for Samuel I's and Stephen I's Boston and Worcester stores; Stephen I's farm account books, 1797-1829, bank books for 1812-1829, legal notes for the years 1798-1805, and estate account books, 1827-1831; and plans, sketches, and accounts for the Worcester store, farm, and mansion. The papers of Rebekah Scott Dean Salisbury, first wife of Stephen II and mother of Stephen III, include family correspondence with her husband and with her sister Catharine Dean Flint. The papers of Nancy Hoard Lincoln Salisbury, second wife of Stephen II, include family correspondence with her husband and with his son, Stephen III. Personal correspondence includes letters from George Bancroft and letter concerning the American Antiquarian Society, Worcester Polytechnic Institute, the Peabody Museum at Harvard, Harvard University, and other educational institutions. There are also letters from Louis Henri Ayme (1855-1912), Philipp Johann Josef Valentini (1828-1899), Andre Aznar Perez (1831-1894), Augustus Le Plongeon (1826-1908), and others, concerning Central American archaeology. There are also legal notes, deeds of land purchased from Stephen Salisbury II for $1.00, wills dated 1872, 1884, 1888, and 1896, as well as a transcript for the 1890 court case of Salisbury v. Washburn and Moen Manufacturing Company concerning water rights. There are notes for essays, speeches, and addresses given by Stephen III and papers concerning the estate of Stephen II. Included also are genealogical materials for the Salisbury family and related families and transcripts of articles appearing in the _Proceedings_ of the American Antiquarian Society. There are also diaries for the years 1848, 1850, and 1852-1904, an 1858 passport, journals of his European trip in 1858 and for his Central American trips in 1861-1862, 1886, and 1894. Washburn family. Papers, 1811-1881.

The collection includes family correspondence and personal papers, business correspondence and legal and business papers, and papers relating to Ichabod Washburn's estate. The family correspondence, for the years 1811 to 1869, includes letters from his daughters, Eliza and Lucy, as well as occasional letters of Washburn and his first wife, Ann, to their daughters. Eliza's letters to her parents illuminate boarding school life in Hatfield, Mass., and Hanover, N.H. She described her studies, daily social activities (with a few comments about the boldness of Dartmouth students), and included several recipes for her mother. After her marriage in 1846, Eliza spoke of daily activities in Brooklyn, N.Y., and later, difficulties in maintaining reliable servants in Worcester in 1847. In 1853, her sister, Lucy, wrote an account of Eliza's illness and death, and wrote of her own stay at a health spa in 1854. There is also a small collection of poems and school compositions written by Eliza. The family correspondence also includes letters written between Washburn and his twin brother, Charles (1798-1875), who eventually joined in his manufacturing interests. The letters began when the two were young boys and Washburn left the family home in Kingston, Mass., to be apprenticed as a harness maker in Duxbury, Mass., and then as a blacksmith in the Worcester area. Later, Charles wrote of his activities at Brown University and family and business matters. He also referred in detail to religious revivalism in Harrison, Me., where he lived for a time. The business correspondence, for the years 1845 to 1868, consists mostly of letters of George Bedson ( -1884), general manager of the Bradford Iron Works near Manchester, England. The letters contain descriptions of Bedson's new techniques for rolling mills and other new equipment available to Washburn, some accompanied by sketches. Bedson also worked with Washburn to secure his patents in America and took an eager interest in the progress of the American Civil War, frequently offering his opinions of the war, the British government's attitude, and his support of the North. Later, he commented on the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, the probable failure of the Atlantic Cable, and a court case in the U.S. involving one of his patents. The business papers include bills, receipts, memoranda, and balance sheets, for the period 1862 to 1865, for I. Washburn and Moen. There is also a collection of papers pertaining to Washburn's will, 1868, which was contested by one of his legatees, the American Bible Society. Included are legal papers and correspondence for various beneficiaries of his will, a copy of his will, papers concerning Bedson's patents, and the efforts of Washburn's second wife, Elizabeth, to settle the estate. Other items in the collection include a schoolbook kept by Washburn, c. 1812; a small leather case containing his passports, 1851 and 1860 (in the oversize folder); a diary he kept of his 1860 trip to Europe; and a volume of sundry expenses and donations made by Washburn, 1844-1856. The latter volume also contains notes on mills visited by him, accompanied by several sketches. There is also a small account book, 1856-1863; newsclippings that refer mainly to his will; and legal papers and patents, 1846-1867. The folio volume is an account book, c. 1821 - c. 1822, of Stephen R. Tenney ( - ) and Washburn, who evidently engaged in the manufacture of lead pipe. At the end of the volume are approximately thirty pages of household accounts, c. 1826 - c. 1828.
