The archive is a collection of correspondence, personal and business papers, photographs, and other materials which document some of the most significant aspects of twentieth-century music. Through his work as a conductor and publisher, and his efforts to commission new musical works, Koussevitzky maintained deep ties with many of the finest composers and musicians of the day. These figures are represented in their personal and professional affiliations with the conductor. In addition to serving as a record of Koussevitzky's life and career, the collection extensively chronicles periods in the history of organizations such as the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Berkshire Music Center, the Koussevitzky Music Foundation, and the American International Music Fund. Material in the collection dates from Koussevitzky's years in his native Russia. The bulk of the collection dates from 1924 to 1951; it also contains material created after Koussevitzky's death, reflecting his widow's continuing work with various organizations and projects. Musical compositions commissioned by Serge Koussevitzky are part of the Serge Koussevitzky Music Foundation Collection, and are shelved in ML30.3c, ML30.3c2, ML30.3c3, and ML30.3e2.

The Arnold T. Schwab Collection is an archive of materials related to the life and work of Marian Nevins MacDowell, wife of composer Edward MacDowell (1860-1908) and founder of the MacDowell Colony in Peterborough, New Hampshire. Schwab collected these materials in preparation for a biography of Marian Nevins MacDowell, a work that was never completed. Included in the collection is a large cache of MacDowell-related correspondence: letters, mostly photocopies, to and from Edward MacDowell, letters, mostly photocopies, to and from Marian Nevins MacDowell, and others assembled from a variety of sources. In the Arnold T. Schwab series of correspondence there are copies of Schwab's letters to various friends and acquaintances of the MacDowells and MacDowell Colonists along with the responses. Some notable correspondents include: Carl Carmer, Aaron Copland, Mabel Daniels, Marjorie Chandler Hazard, George Kendall, Nina Maud Richardson, Cecil Smith, Conrad Spohnholz, Louise Talma and many others. A large group of index cards organized by various subjects and, apparently, gleaned from the above described correspondence, capsulize various aspects of Schwab's research. In addition to photographs of the MacDowells and some of their acquaintances, there are a group of scrapbooks, assembled by Schwab and organized by date.

Wilder'scorrespondence with family members, notably with his sister Isabel, isextensive and contains much information on both his personal and professionalactivities. General Correspondence consists mainly of letters received byWilder and particularly documents his literary activities and public receptionafter the success of Our Town in 1938. Series III, Personal Papers, includes journals,autobiographical notes and notebooks kept by Wilder; numerous awards and honorsbestowed on him; papers relating to his education and career as a universitylecturer; research notes on Finnegans Wake; his military service papers; andsome financial and travel records. Series IV, Printed Material, consists ofnewspaper clippings, pamphlets, and an extensive run of theater programs forplays attended by Wilder and his sister Isabel. Series V, Photographs,primarily contains portraits of Wilder taken throughout his life, includingsome of his stage appearances and a variety of publicity shots. There are alsophotographs of family and friends and production photographs for severalplays. Series VI, Memorabilia and Other Papers, contains artwork, otherrealia, and musical scores by Louise Talma and others. Series VII, Audio Tapesand Other Recordings, consists of a variety of sound recordings received withthe Wilder Papers, including interviews and readings. Series VIII, ThorntonWilder Papers Addition, contains a small amount of family correspondencereceived after the collection had been processed.
