Papers of the Higginson family include genealogical information; deeds to lands in Salem, Mass.; business papers; and copied correspondence. Papers of Stephen Higginson, a Continental Congressman and merchant, include letters to Elbridge Gerry, Henry Knox, and Arthur Lee on Massachusetts and national politics; business accounts; and business correspondence and accounts with Salem and Boston merchants Elias Derby, LeRoy and Bayard Co., and Richard Derby. Letters from Francis Higginson (1733-1766), John Higginson (1675-1718), and Nathaniel Higginson concern trade with the West Indies and whaling. Among other Higginsons in the collection are: Francis (1586-1630), George, Henry, five Johns, Louise, Mehetable, Sarah, and Thomas Wentworth Higginson. Additional correspondents include Jacob Ashton, Simon Epes, and James Jeffry.

Photostats collected by historian Stewart Mitchell concerning the first Massachusetts charter and other events in early Massachusetts history. The documents include all stages of development of the Royal Charter, including copies of the King's Bill, Writ of Privy Seal, etc., and copies of all official and early manuscript copies by John Winthrop and John Endecott. Also includes copies of documents concerning the settlement of Massachusetts Bay by the Massachusetts Bay Company, extracts from John Winthrop's journal, 1630 and Francis Higginson's writings; copies of the Royal seal and early seals of the Massachusetts Bay and Plymouth Colonies; documents concerning the sale of Indian captives; Revolutionary war journals of Ezra Tilden and copies of annotated almanacs. Also includes documents written or signed by John F. Eliot, John Leverett, and King Charles I. The photostats were collected for the publication of The Founding of Massachusetts: a selection from the sources of the history of the settlement, 1628-31 in the proceedings of the Massachusetts Historical Society. Also includes a line by line listing of variations in the texts of the Royal Charter, by Julia Crouse.

Title: Francis Higginson journal, 1629.

Journal of Rev. Francis Higginson, kept from 25 April - 25 June 1629. The journal describes Higginson's voyage from London to Salem, Mass., which he titled, "The true story of the voyage to New England." Higginson was part of the second expedition of the Company of the Massachusetts Bay in New England. Entries note weather conditions, and life aboard his ship (the Talbot), including a smallpox outbreak, and the death of his daughter, Mary, from the disease. Also included are the names and descriptions of the five ships in Higginson's party: the Talbot, the George, the Lion's Whelp, the Three Sisters, and the Mayflower. The journal also contains a manuscript copy of Higginson's "Agreement with the New England Company, April 8, 1629," and a manuscript copy of the "The True Copie of the Agreement of Cambridge [England], August 26, 1629," in which several additional men, including John Winthrop, agree to take part in the Company's third expedition the following year.
