Goodwin, 1921-1964; Robert T. Hatt, 1925-1940; John Eric Hill, 1935-1950; Karl F. Koopman, 1953-1979; Guy Musser, 1959-1976; Henry C. Raven, 1916-1951; Hobart M. Van Deusen; and Richard Van Gelder. Other scientists include Glover M. Allen; Childs Frick, 1915-1972; and George H. Sherwood, Director of the Museum, 1917-1937. The collection consists of unprocessed notes, manuscripts and correspondence, with some drawings and black and white photographic prints. The text material is a mix of handwritten notes and typewritten (mostly carbon copies) manuscripts and letters; there are also pencil sketches, some in color. The topics of the written material are primarily Raven's articles on mammalian anatomy, and the results of his collecting expeditions, including Meshie, an orphaned baby chimpanzee that Raven adopted during the 1929-1931 Columbia University-American Museum of Natural History Expedition to Africa.

Title: Special Films Collection: Zoological films, 1912-1959.

Zoological films are concerned with living animals. A large subseries consists of 16 films made by the American Nature Association, publisher of NATURE MAGAZINE, as lecture films, 1925-1930 and filmed by William and Irene Finley on expeditions to the American West, Pacific Coast, and Alaska. Other films in series portray African animals, lyre birds, and marsupials of Australia, reptiles of Santo Domingo, courtship activities of American grouse and birds of Antarctica. The film "Meshie", depicting the tame chimpanzee owned by Dr. Henry C. Raven, is also included.

Gregory's papers reflect his professional affairs and interest in vertebrate paleontology concerning the evolution of mammals, fish, and primates. He investigated comparative anatomy of the muscles of the vertebrates; evolution of the motor apparatus from fish to man; evolution of the jaws, teeth and skull; comparative anatomy of anthropoid apes and man; evolution of skulls of fishes; and history and relationships of fishes in geologic time. Papers include Gregory's general correspondence with universities, colleges, and scientists about his research topics and publications. Correspondence with museums about purchasing replicas of fossils and with students seeking employment. In addition, his lecture notes prepared for zoology classes emphasizing evolution, 1925-1926 and 1939. Manuscripts and notes for his publications, "Comparative Survey of Evolution From Primeval Life to Man," "On the Evolution and Major Classification of the Civets (Viverridae) and Allied Fossil and Recent Carnivora: A Phylogenetic Study of the Skull and Dentition," and several chapters of procession of the Vertebrates - A Comparative Survey of Evolution from Primeval Life to Man." Also, notes for his paper with Walter Granger, "A Revision of the Titanotheres of Mongolia" and galley proofs for several papers.
