Special Films Collection: Zoological films, 1912-1959.

Zoological films are concerned with living animals. A large subseries consists of 16 films made by the American Nature Association, publisher of NATURE MAGAZINE, as lecture films, 1925-1930 and filmed by William and Irene Finley on expeditions to the American West, Pacific Coast, and Alaska. Other films in series portray African animals, lyre birds, and marsupials of Australia, reptiles of Santo Domingo, courtship activities of American grouse and birds of Antarctica. The film "Meshie", depicting the tame chimpanzee owned by Dr. Henry C. Raven, is also included.

Henry Cushier Raven (1889-1944) began his zoological career in the Department of Preparation of the American Museum of Natural History in 1907. While there he worked with Jesse D. Figgins and Herbert Lang, noted taxidermists. When Figgins moved to the Colorado Museum of Natural History in 1910, he took Raven with him.
