The collection consists of unprocessed notes, manuscripts and correspondence, with some drawings and black and white photographic prints. The text material is a mix of handwritten notes and typewritten (mostly carbon copies) manuscripts and letters; there are also pencil sketches, some in color. The topics of the written material are primarily Raven's articles on mammalian anatomy, and the results of his collecting expeditions, including Meshie, an orphaned baby chimpanzee that Raven adopted during the 1929-1931 Columbia University-American Museum of Natural History Expedition to Africa.

Henry Cushier Raven (1889-1944) began his zoological career in the Department of Preparation of the American Museum of Natural History in 1907. While there he worked with Jesse D. Figgins and Herbert Lang, noted taxidermists. When Figgins moved to the Colorado Museum of Natural History in 1910, he took Raven with him.
