Title: Michigan city maps, 1831-1919.

Series 53-58 of record group 58-17 consists of seven maps of several Michigan cities. The first is a map of the city of Detroit, as laid out by the governor and judges (1831), John Farmer, draftsman. The map shows streets, sections, military reserves, boundaries of lots and alleys, and occasionally owner's name. The second map is of Detroit and environs (1919), Wm. Sauer, draftsman, printed by Topping-Sanders Co. The third map is of Gladstone, showing Bay View, Goodman's, Buckeye and furnance additions (1910). The fourth map is of the city of Mackinaw (1857), R.C. Phillips, surveyor. It shows transportation lines and proposed railroad and ferry lines, docks, old Fort Park. The fifth and sixth maps are of Sault Ste. Marie (1853). The first shows claims, missions, military and Indian reserves, cemeteries, public square, school and church lots (Wm. Edmunds, surveyor). The second map includes new measures and notes of discrepancies of the first map. The final map is a supplemental map of private claims at Sault Ste. Marie, Thomas Whelpley, D.S. (1855).

The map is 47 1/2" x V 67" in size with a scale of 7 1/2" to 1 in. Includes insets: map of Beaver Isles from actual surveys; a geological map of Isle Royale, Lake Superior; connection of the private claims with the public surveys at Ptc. Ste. The collection, 1880-2011, and undated, consists mostly of photocopies, made between 1989 and 2009, of newspaper articles, magazine articles, information from websites, the Congressional Record, and chapters from reference and other books, on topics of interest to Barnett. Also included are his correspondence and email to various institutions and people asking for information and material, his notes, and typed articles he wrote on various topics. Topics documented in depth include: Ash, Center Line, John Farmer, Upper Peninsula railroads, Magnet Truck, Michigan railroads, the Mackinac Bridge, music and singers who sang songs about Michigan and or cars, the longstanding oleo versus margarine debates and laws, Michigan Central Railroad Co. Head Lights (a publication), Michigan jazz, traffic lights, with biographical materials on W.L. Potts, and Detroit, Mackinac & Marquette Railroad Co. maps (oversized transparencies). The materials (photocopies)on Headlights or Headlight Flashes includes: an advertising publication of the Company, which describes the comfort of traveling via the Company's trains and provides city histories with biographies of important families and individuals, as well as photographs of those people, expensive homes, businesses, public buildings, and pastoral scenes. Towns described include: Michigan City (Ind.), 1894; and the Mich. cities of: Albion, 1895; Pontiac, 1897; Benton Harbor and Flint, 1896; and Saint Joseph, 1898. Also included are microfilmed newspaper articles (photocopies), in which the Headlights of various cities were advertised, 1895-1896 and 1941, and 1997-2000 typed transcripts of other similar newspaper advertisements, 1895-1898. Additional subjects include: Agricultural Demonstration Trains of Michigan State University, 1906-1937; buying Michigan, 1795-1796; counties, name changes/considered creation of new counties; the history of county names; dandelions [as an emergency source of post-World War II rubber]; highway lighthouses [precursors to traffic lights]; lynchings; prisoners building Michigan roads during the 1920s; reflectors (roadside); roadside parks [Michigan had the first]; stagecoaches; broadcasting; homestead lands; Hollywood; the Port Huron and Milwaukee Railroad; Sabbath blue laws; Ludington (Mich.); swamp lands; centroids; Iron Range and Huron Bay Rialroad; ferries; population centers; and Oldsmar, among other topics. The collection is ongoing. Due to the number of additions to the collection received annually, the encoded finding aid will be updated once annually each December.

Correspondence of Lemuel Shattuck, chiefly letters addressed to him. The letters discuss Shattuck's work on his history of Concord, Mass.; his tenure as the editor of the Yeoman's Gazette; various publishing projects; the affairs of the Middlesex County and Cambridge, Mass. Lyceums, the 6th U.S. Census (1840); and his work on statistics, public health, history, and genealogy. The largest group (21 letters, 1826-1849) is Shattuck's correspondence with Edward Everett. Everett's letters cover the politcal affairs, including Everett's 1826 speech on slavery and his position on the Antimasonic and National Republican parties in the 1832 elections. Other correspondents include James Buchanan (1791-1868); Ralph Waldo Emerson, John Farmer (1789-1838), George Farrar (1778-1858), Richard Fletcher (1788-1869), John Hoskins Griscom (1809-1874); Eben Norton Horsford (1818-1893), Horace Mann (1706-1859), James Gates Percival (1795-1856); Ezra Ripley (1751-1841), Jared Sparks I1789-1866), James Stewart (1799-1864), James Walker (1794-1874), Francis Wayland (1796-1865), Daniel Webster (1782-1852), Noah Webster (1758-1843), and Robert Charles Winthrop (1809-1854). Also included a group of 16 manuscripts (1654-1799), collected by Shattuck in preparation for his history of Concord, Mass. Including the documents dealing with Simon Willard's 1654 expedition against the Narrangansett Indians; King Phillip's War (1675-1676), and the dispute between the town of Concord and Robert Blood (1685/6).
