Lucille Lortel papers
Title:
Lucille Lortel papers
The papers of Lucille Lortel relate the details of her life and career from teen years to her death in 1999, and include correspondence, production files, scripts, programs, production photographs, personal and family photographs, organization files, clippings, memorabilia, and scrapbooks. Lucille Lortel's life spanned the twentieth century, so in addition to providing details of her family and personal life her papers encompass many aspects of the theatrical history of her era. Lortel is credited with fostering the Off-Broadway movement and providing a forum for avant-garde and experimental work at her Theatre de Lys. Lortel's productions at the White Barn and the ANTA Matinee Series at the Theatre de Lys brought works by Jean Genet, Sean O'Casey, Athol Fugard, and others to a wider audience. Many of these productions are represented in the collection by correspondence, programs, photographs and clippings. Over the years Lortel also worked closely with several non-profit theaters as a donor and mentor. Her affiliations with Circle in the Square, Circle Repertory Company, Goodspeed Opera House, Yale Repertory Theatre, and other companies are documented in the organization files.

Roth of Stravinsky's publishers, Boosey & Hawkes, London. The letters discuss business matters pertaining to the production of the opera, financial support for the work, where to stage the premier (including discussions about a possible staging at USC), locations for the opera's American debut, problems associated with Italian singers performing in English, and various other financial and administrative matters pertaining to the completion and production of the work. Stravinsky's letters to Weissberger are on his personal letterhead with his Los Angeles address, "1260 N. Wetherly Drive, Hollywood 46, California."

Stravinsky, Igor, 1882-1971. Letters to L. Arnold Weissberger, 1954-1962.
Title:
Letters to L. Arnold Weissberger, 1954-1962.
Several of the letters are about the ballet AGON which premiered in Los Angeles on June 17, 1907. This ballet marked his first work using the twelve tone technique of Arnold Schoenberg instead of the neoclassic style which Stravinsky had previously used. All of Stravinsky's subsequent works were influenced by the twelve tone technique use in AGON. Other items in the collection deal with such matters as publication of an article he had done about his RITE OF SPRING, going to Mexico and San Francisco to conduct concerts, printing and publishing of some of his works, contracts with various record companies, and a possible NBC film production, as well as other subjects. [Description from dealer description].
