Title: Henry Onderdonk papers 1729-1895

Henry Onderdonk (1804-1886) of Queens County, Long Island, New York, was an educator at Union Hall Academy, and an historian and author of many works based on his research among local records. The Onderdonk papers include manuscript versions of Onderdonk's historical works; notes and transcriptions taken by Onderdonk from private journals, church and local government records, and newspapers; correspondence from historians, genealogists and others often conveying information requested by Onderdonk; and scrapbooks of newspaper clippings covering the 1820s to 1868, with some earlier and later dated material. The bulk of the material concerns the geographic area encompassing present day Queens and Nassau counties, though the other two counties on Long Island, Kings and Suffolk, are also represented. The historical manuscripts, notes and extensive correspondence in the collection tend to center around Onderdonk's research into the American Revolution, Quakers, churches, agriculture/animal husbandry, and genealogies, all with a focus on Long Island. Perhaps the most prominent correspondent is James Fenimore Cooper, whose three letters concern Loyalist Oliver de Lancey. Among the many other correspondents are historians George Bancroft, E. F. Ellet, E. B. O'Callaghan, Jeptha Root Simms, and Jared Sparks. The several scrapbooks in the collection, also with a Long Island focus, concern a number of subjects, principally electoral and partisan politics, agriculture, temperance, announcements and public notices for a wide variety of events, such as school openings, church dedications, auctions, cultural talks, etc., crimes and accidents, court proceedings, Civil War recruitments and drafts, and railroad developments, among other matters.

Thompson of Hempstead to Samuel Ludlow Thompson, of Setauket, and concern family matters and some business dealings. Also, miscellaneous papers of his father, Samuel Thompson,; an indenture of B.F. Thompson giving up claim to the estate of his father; a letter to Samuel L. Thompson from "niece Mary" requesting his portrait, 1838; letters to Samuel L. Thompson from Abraham Thompson in Paris, 1838; and a certificate, dated at the Manor of St. George, 1699, signed by William Smith, about "Samuell Tompson [sic] and Hannah his wife" as administrators for the estate of John Muncy.

Hubbell; a program of the Lamar Memorial Lectures; two volumes of GRANT STREET VERSE; a xeroxed copy of "A Tribute to Professor Kenneth Ballard Murdock, Honored Scholar of Early American Literature" from EARLY AMERICAN LITERATURE magazine; poems by Paul E. Hubbbel, including one entitled "In Academici Memoriam" written in memory of his brother in 1979; a 1985 essay by Paul E. Hubbell entitled "The Making of Edward Gibbon, 1737-1778;" and clippings concerning the death of Wilburt C. Davison. Thompson for the year 1856; a scrapbook of Lucy McMickle, wife of Dr. Kimbro Thompson, in which clippings of agricultural pointers, stories, poems, etc. have been pasted on pages which apparently were Dr. Thompson's notes on diseases and medications, recipes, poems, and copies of letters have been added; a notebook fo Anne Thompson from Meredith College, Raleigh, N.C.; clippings of pictures of some of her classmates.

Spinola, Jonathan Sturges, Benjamin Franklin Thompson and Effingham Tuthill. Diaries or journals, 1843-1868, include many sketches. Bound note-books and loose notes include autobiographical notes, lists of commissions and paintings, notes on a variety of subjects such as painting techniques and materials, other painters, health and medications, carriage painting, boat design, improvements to the harbor at St. James, N.Y., politics, spiritualism and religion. There are also social invitations, calling cards, notices of exhibits and other announcements of the National Academy of Design, books and catalogs from Mount's library, an adminiustrator's account for Mount's estate, ms. music written or copied by Mount, and patterns, varnish recipes, memoranda, notes, a U.S. patent and other papers concerning Mount's invention of a hollow-backed violin called the "Cradle of Harmony."
