This volume is a typescript draft of a manuscript intended for publication, titled "Homes and Habits of Ancient Blandford." It contains eighteen chapters, commencing with "Wilderness," which traces the town's original settlement in 1735 and early history. Wood included chapters concerning the history of the town's business community, the early settlers and their families, the controversies surrounding the Presbyterian ministry of Rev. James Morton (1714-1793), and the roles which Blandford's residents played in the American Revolution and in the settlement of the West through the activities of the Scioto Company. Wood analyzed the country life of Blandford and the "profound changes" in religion which occurred following the Revolution. There are also studies of people who contributed much to the town's growth, including Levi Pease (1739-1824), the founder of the first stagecoach run in the East, and Rev. John Keep (1781-1870), who led a religious revival during his ministry. Wood concluded his manuscript with varied anecdotes from the town's older residents (many in the form of poetry), and with studies of old houses and public buildings of Blandford.

The bulk of the correspondence concerns his evangelistic work, particularly in New York State, the scene of his most extensive revivals, and at Oberlin College. Also included is correspondence from family, friends, converts, and English acquaintances. Prominent correspondents include such persons as Nathan Sidney Smith Beman, Josiah Chapin, John P. Cushman, George Washington Gale, Eliphalet Wheeler Gilbert, John Keep, Joshua Leavitt, Mary A Parker, Willard Sears, and Lewis Tappan.

Consists almost exclusively of correspondence received by the Oberlin College Treasurer, including a few letters predating the founding of Oberlin College (1833) which relate mainly to the activities of co- founder John J. Shipherd. Because the Treasurer also acted as the institution's secretary during this period, the letters deal with a wide variety of subjects, including the founding and organization of Oberlin College, efforts to secure financing, inquiries regarding admissions, queries from and about students, and other routine administrative topics. Subjects of wider interest include opposition to slavery, aid for Negroes, coeducation, temperance activity, and religious and educational work.
