The first financial officer of Oberlin College was Eliphalet Redington, who was appointed Treasurer in 1833. During these early years and lasting until 1899, the Treasurer did double duty, also serving as Secretary (or "corresponding Secretary") for the Board of Trustees. As Secretary the Treasurer carried out all of the Board's correspondence, kept records of donations, fees collected, expenditures, loans and scholarships, business matters, and handled most other routine administrative matters. It was not until 1899 that responsibilities of the Secretary were separated from the financial responsibilities of the Treasurer resulting in two separate positions.

The Secretary carried out all of the Board's correspondence, kept records of donations, fees collected, expenditures, loans and scholarships, and managed the College's property and investments. Essentially, all business matters for the College were handled by the Treasurer/Secretary. It was not until 1899 that responsibilities of the Secretary were separted from the financial responsibilities of the Treasurer, resulting in two separate positions.
