This series documents the administrative activities of the Public Service Commission as it carries out its function of supervising and regulating public transportation and utilities. The records consist of correspondence, memoranda, minutes, and reports that provide information on policy, organization, program development, and other administrative functions. Among the services regulated by the Commission are electricity, gas, water, telephone, telegraph, radio, and public transportation, i.e., railroads, buses, truck lines, and taxis. Also included are Interstate Commerce Commission rulings and decisions. The series is arranged by a numerical filing scheme making it necessary to consult the Index to Administrative Files to obtain access to the records. The index is a series of three by five inch note cards that are arranged alphabetically by subject and provide the corresponding file number. (See ALAV90-A192.).

Title: Administrative correspondence, 1821-1932.

The comptroller of public accounts served as the state's chief financial officer responsible for virtually all revenue and accounting functions. In 1868 the office of comptroller of public accounts was abolished, and its functions became the responsibility of the state auditor. This series consists of correspondence, financial reports from county jails, reports on the number and type of business licences issued by county judges of probate, receipts for various services rendered, county tax assessment reports, sales reports from county auctioneers, petitions, financial statements from insurance companies, land sale certificates, bonds, and various miscellaneous documents. Specific topics of interest include transactions regarding the Gulf, Mobile and Ohio Railroad Company, and the establishment and administration of the Alabama Institution for the Deaf and Dumb. Correspondence to and from Peter Bryce, director of the Insane Hospital in Tuscaloosa is also in this series. Also of special interest are the records regarding the State Boundary Commission's activities negotiating boundary disputes with the state of Florida. The series contains correspondence to and from State comptrollers and auditors Arthur Bingham, Malcolm A. Chisholm, George W. Crabb, Duncan Blue Graham, William J. Greene, Robert M. Reynolds, Joel Riggs, and Jefferson C. Van Dyke.

The collection consists of records of District 4 (Southeast) of the International Association of Machinists (IAM), and its successor the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers from 1901-1974. The records include correspondence (1928-1974), printed material (1933-1974), grievance claims (1944-1974), legal documents (1948-1973), financial documents (1939-1940; 1951-1974), minutes (1901-1905; 1939-1966; 1973), and contract negotiations. The correspondence is mainly of various district officers, the Machinists Non-Partisan Political League, the Railway Employers Dept. of the AFL-CIO, and various railroads which the union held contracts with including the Atlantic Coast Line, the Central of Georgia Railway, the Gulf, Mobile, and Ohio Railroad, and the Southern Railway System.

Title: H. H. Copeland Maps and Tables 1924-1956

The Transportation Library's collection of H. H. Copeland and Son's maps consist of 74 maps and tables on U. S. railways dating from the early 1930's to the mid 1950's. The Copeland maps consist of traffic density maps and tables on ton miles, freight density and traffic distribution and other railway related tables and calculations. H. H. Copeland and Sons were an investment house, in existence from the late 19th century to at least the mid 1950's. The company ordered the compilations for the maps and tables to support their own business interests and would not allow the items to be copied.
