Henry Remsen, Jr. (1762-1843) was a financier and bank executive in New York City. He also served as private secretary to Thomas Jefferson during Jefferson's presidency. Collection contains correspondence and legal papers of Henry Remsen, Jr. and his family. Bulk of the correspondence consists of letters from Remsen to his son, Henry R. Remsen, and to his sister Caroline. In addition to family affairs, letters concern fiscal and political matters. Also, some business and personal correspondence including letters from Charles Willson Peale to Remsen concerning inheritance problems; legal papers; and papers relating to the estates of the Remsen and Brinckerhoff families.

Elizabeth R. Boyd Historical Collection on Rutgers University, 1795-1956

Title: Guide to the Elizabeth R. Boyd Historical Collection on Rutgers University, 1795-1956

This collection primarily consists of Rutgers University documents and notes and printed material relating to Rutgers. Many of the original Rutgers University documents were housed in the Rutgers University Archives for a number of years. Then they became separated. At some point, perhaps in the 1950s, these documents came into the possession of Elizabeth R. Boyd, who worked in the Rutgers University Library in the 1930s through the 1950s and was the first curator of the Rutgersensia collection, which was a collection of historical information on Rutgers. Other information regarding painters and paintings was compiled by Alexander Stuart Graham who worked in the Rutgers University Library in the 1920s and 1930s. Although some of the materials were originally housed in different collections, their collation into the Boyd collection has been maintained, with some exceptions. The collection is divided into three series: I. Rutgers University Files, II. William Henry Steele Demarest Files, and III. Boyd/Graham Files

Cameron, Donald F. Records, 1925-1971.

Title: Records, 1925-1971.

The administrative records of the Office of University Librarian during the tenure of Donald F. Cameron consists of annual reports, meeting minutes, and correspondence of a professional and, less often, personal nature. The annual reports series provides a yearly progress report on library activity. Financial matters are contained in the series on budgets and financial records. One can view the day-to-day activities of the University Librarian through the general correspondence files, which are arranged alphabetically by sender or recipient of each letter. The bulk of the records are contained in the subject files. Within these files is documentation of Cameron's leadership of the Rutgers library system. Included are topics both internal to the operations of gthe library and external subjects that concerned Cameron, including professional organizations, associations and committees in which he participated. The records also contain extensive documentation on library construction on the New Brunswick, Newark, and Camden campuses of Rutgers. The final series documents Cameron involvement in the origins and development of the Rutgers University Press and Press Council.

Papers, 1774-1830, the majority dating from the Revolutionary War. They include letters received, drafts of letters sent, acounts, receipts, military orders, inventories, muster and pay rolls, military pay accounts, indentures, court-martial papers and civil court papers. They deal with: Varick's command of a company in Alexander McDougall's battalion at Ticonderoga and in Canada during 1775; service on courts-martial in 1775; problems of the batteau service in northern New York State in 1776; his position as secretary to Gen. Philip Schuyler in 1775-1776; his work as deputy muster master general, inspector general at West Point, first aide-de-camp to Benedict Arnold (including papers about Arnold's defection and subsequent investigations), and as recording secretary for George Washington (including papers about the transcription of Washington's letters). Many pertain to suits handled by him as an attorney practising in Poughkeepsie in 1782-1783, and in New York City after the war. The remainder include: papers about veterans' claims to military lands in New York State, including some maps; letters from various French persons, ca. 1780 to ca. 1800; papers relating to the settlement of the estate of Derick Dey, Varick's maternal grandfather, and the affairs of other members of the Dey family; personal and family correspondence and accounts; a few documents signed by Varick in his capacity as mayor of New York. Richard Varick, born in New Jersey, 1753, served as Captain, deputy muster-master-general, and George Washington's secretary during the Revolutionary war. He was appointed one of the first mayors of New York and served from 1789-1801. He died in 1831. His papers contain items resulting from his military, legal, and political careers, as well as personal and familial correspondence and accounts--including letters received, drafts of letters sent, accounts, receipts, military orders, inventories, muster and pay rolls, military pay accounts, indentures, court-martial papers and civil court papers.

Title: William Edgar papers 1750-1870

William Edgar (1736-1820) was an Irish-born merchant of Detroit, Michigan, where he was a financial agent for the British Army post. He moved to New York City in 1780 or 1781 and engaged in trade with China and East India. Collection consists of negative copies of correspondence, accounts and other papers relating to Edgar's trading post at Detroit; and correspondence concerning family and personal matters. Papers until the end of the American Revolution are dated at New York, Albany, Montreal, Michilimackinac, Philadelphia, Trenton, and elsewhere. Later papers relate to trade with London, Calcutta, Canton, China, and locations within the U.S. Correspondents include Gerard Beekman, Aaron Burr, DeWitt Clinton, Horatio Gates, Alexander Hamilton, Brockholst Livingston, Philip Livingston, Alexander Macomb, Gurdon S. The letters to Henry Rutgers, dated 1783-1820, relate chiefly to matters of business and politics. Many of these letters were from his cousin, Robert Rutgers, which also included news about the family. Other correspondents of Rutgers include Abraham Bancker, Aaron Burr, Benjamin Tallmadge, Gerard De Peyster, and William B. Crosby. Also includes several letters, dated 1801-1824, of Henry Rutgers to William B. Crosby relative to politics and government. The papers of Edmund B. Shotwell consist primarily of research notes compiled for a biography of Henry Rutgers. The notes are handwritten, in both pen and pencil. Additional items, such as newspaper, magazine and book clippings have been affixed to pages, along with handwritten notations. Shotwell's notes cover approximately the period of Henry Rutgers' life (1745-1830), and include research on his education, political, religious and social affiliations. Additional background information is provided about the age in which Rutgers lived and his contemporaries. Genealogies of the Rutgers family, maps of family property, and lists of deed transfers are also included. The correspondence of Shotwell deals specifically with inquiries made to persons and/or agencies concerning Henry Rutgers.

This collection contains the personal letters and business documents of several members of the Grew family, as well as some relating to the Wigglesworth, Greene, Phillips, Williams, and Crosby families. Series I: The Grew Family contains correspondence of members of the immediate and extended family, including Henry Grew, John Grew, Anna C. (Grew) Alvord, Henry Sturgis Grew, Jane Norton (Wigglesworth) Grew, Mary Coltman, Elizabeth Coltman, George Sturgis, Anne Terry (Greene) Phillips, and Wendell Phillips. Also included are letters patent (land documents) pertaining to Ebenezer Young; John and Mary (Coltman) Grews marriage settlement; a note inviting Wendell Phillips to serve as the delegate from the Massachusetts to the American Anti-Slavery Society; photographs sent from China by Henry Sturgis Grew; a scrapbook containing Civil War newspaper clippings compiled by either Anne or Thomas Wigglesworth; and a travel journal kept by Jane Norton (Wigglesworth) Grew. Series II: The Crosby Family contains letters written to William Bedloe Crosby, including some from his uncle Henry Rutgers; a lease agreement from 1767; a reference letter for Doctor Peter S. Townsend; and letters to John Schuyler Crosby. Also included are letters pertaining to Sir William Johnson and Governor John Tayler, and a manuscript detailing the history of the Burr/Hamilton dueling pistols, written by Major Richard Church. Series III: The Williams Family contains letters written by Franklin Delano Williams to his family in Greenfield, MA during his time in China, as well as shipping invoices and other business documents. Also included are letters written to Mary (Nelson) Williams after her husband died.

John Ten Eyck Lansing, Jr. (1754-1829) was an American lawyer, jurist, and politician. He disappeared under mysterious circumstances in 1829. The John Lansing, Jr. papers consist mainly of letters received from prominent business and legal figures of the day, including Rufus King, Theodore Sedgwick, Stephen and Jeremiah Van Rensselaer, Eilardus Westerlo, and Jellis Fonda. Many letters are from his brother-in-law, Cornelius Ray. Also present are financial and legal documents including wills, indentures, land patents, invoices, and passports relating to members of the Lansing, Livingston, Ray, and Van Rensselaer families

The administrative records in this collection document the activities of the Office of University Librarian under the leadership of Donald F. Cameron. Not only does it outline the regular operations of the office, but it also records the multitude of activites that Cameron partook in as the University Librarian. The Annual Reports of the Librarian of the University relate the activities of the library as a whole, its departments, and its units and were issued for accountability purposes. The Budget and Financial records include letters and memos on budgetary matters, budget sheets, salary rates, accountings of endowments, and financial statistics. The General Correspondence series mainly consists of letters, the majority of which document the mundane matters of Cameron's everyday work. Within the Subject Files is documentation of Cameron's leadership of the Rutgers Libraries. The Library Buildings series documents the planning and construction of many Rutgers University libraries, which were overseen by Cameron.
