Two copies of a volume of photomicrographs made by Thomson in 1864 during the Civil War at Douglas Hospital, Washington, D.C., to demonstrate the value of photomicrography and its possibility with the compound microscope then issued by the Surgeon General's Office to the general hospitals. The volumes were assembled by the Army Medical Museum for the 1876 Centennial Exhibition. Surgeon General's Library copy includes an introductory handwritten note by Joseph J. Woodward and the other copy which belonged to Assistant Surgeon General Charles H. Crane has a 20th century tipped-in photograph of same.

Also two logbooks from the Bureau of Surgical Records, Surgeon General's Office, listing reported operations and injuries as well as clerk activity reports; together with charts of rations, medicines, and Confederate casualties. The records were used for The Medical and Surgical History of the War of the Rebellion.

In the 1980s the National Library of Medicine began a program of acquiring copies of the correspondence of John Shaw Billings located in other repositories. Correspondence (6 items) from the American Library Association Archives in the University of Illinois dates from 1898-1912. Letters in the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia (17 items) date from 1862 to 1899; most are with Joseph Leidy and concern the identification of parasites, fungi, and entozoa. Correspondence from 1884 to 1887 with Henry A. Ward has been copied from the University of Rochester Library, and concerns primarily the acquisition of specimens for the Army Medical Museum.
