The Emergency Committee to Save the Jewish People of Europe was a Jewish activist group led by Peter H. Bergson and Ben Hecht, among others; founded in 1943, the group publicized the extermination of the Jewish people ongoing under Nazi reign in Europe and pressured the administration of President Franklin Roosevelt to take measures to save Jewish refugees.
Chicago and New York journalist, novelist, and playwright; Hollywood screenwriter; and Jewish activist.
Ben Hecht, writer.
Journalist, playwright, script writer.
Ben Hecht, playwright.
Ben Hecht, screenwriter.
Ben Hecht was born on February 28, 1894, in New York, New York. While he was a child, his family moved to Racine, Wisconsin, where he met his “first mentor,” the trapeze artist Harry Costello. At age 14 Hecht joined Costello as a trapeze performer in his traveling show. Hecht had little formal education, but was a voracious reader. In 1910, he enrolled at the University of Wisconsin; however, having already read the required books, he left within the first few days, feeling that the University “had nothing to teach him.” He moved to Chicago where a distant uncle assisted Hecht in obtaining a job at the Chicago Journal .
Hecht’s career as a journalist, first with the Chicago Journal (1910-1914) and later the Chicago Daily News (1914-1923), influenced much of his later writing. Chicago’s streets, jails, courtrooms, and citizenry provided ample inspiration for Hecht, who wrote vivid, authentic, though not always pleasant stories about the city, always seeking “to remove the mask from the world.” Following World War I, the Chicago Daily News sent Hecht to Berlin as foreign correspondent. After returning from Europe in 1920, he wrote a daily column for the Chicago Daily News entitled “1001 Afternoons in Chicago.” The column was highly regarded and established a reporting model for the human interest story that was widely adopted by later journalists. Covici-McGee compiled a selection of these reports and published a book under the same name in 1922. Indeed, the success of 1001 Afternoons in Chicago overshadowed the release of his first novel in 1921, Erik Dorn . Hecht’s straightforward language and style of prose led to federal charges against him for using the mail to send obscene material, with officials branding his book Fantazius Mallare: A Mysterious Oath (1922) as “lewd, obscene, and lascivious.”
During Chicago’s eruption of literary and artistic expression between 1912 and 1922, Hecht was well positioned as a writer and contributor to the Chicago Literary Renaissance. Among his friends were authors and artists, including Stanislaus Szukalski, Edgar Lee Masters, Carl Sandburg, Sherwood Anderson, Maxwell Bodenheim, and Pascal Covici. Hecht was a frequent contributor to and literary critic for the influential art and literature magazine The Little Review, founded by Margaret Anderson. Between 1923 and 1924, Hecht published his own literature magazine, The Chicago Literary Times . “Attack everything” was the guiding philosophy for the publication and as its chief-and at times sole-contributor, Hecht did just that, commenting on a range of topics from literature to politics. During this time, Hecht published three more books: The Florentine Dagger: A Novel for Amateur Detectives (1923), Humpty Dumpty (1924), and The Kingdom of Evil: A Continuation of the Journal of Fantazius Mallare (1924).
Hecht enjoyed his greater success as a playwright. The Egotist was first produced on Broadway on December 25, 1922. At that time, Hecht reconnected with Charles MacArthur, a writer and journalist he knew in Chicago. The two men formed a life-long friendship and a successful creative partnership. Their collaborations include the plays The Front Page (1928), Twentieth Century (1932), and Jumbo (1935). In addition to their theater pieces, MacArthur and Hecht collaborated on screenplays and film projects. Their play The Front Page was adapted into a movie of the same title on three occasions (1931, 1945, and 1974) and helped establish the newspaper film genre.
In 1924, Hecht left his wife, Marie Armstrong, and their daughter, Edwina (Teddy), in Chicago and moved to New York City with writer Rose Caylor. Hecht and Marie divorced in 1925 and Caylor and Hecht married later that year. They had one daughter, Jenny. While living in New York, Hecht published eight books, including Count Bruga (1926), A Jew in Love (1931), A Book of Miracles (1939), Collected Short Stories (1943), and A Guide for the Bedeviled (1944). A Book of Miracles was Hecht’s most highly praised novel; however, most of his books were met with little critical or commercial success. In 1940 he joined the staff of the publication PM, where he wrote a column entitled “1001 Afternoons in New York.”
It was perhaps with feelings of personal ambivalence that Hecht returned to Hollywood in 1941 to write screenplays. He was prolific and financially successful, usually working on more than one screenplay at a time and often completing a screenplay in less than two weeks. He wrote and contributed-often uncredited-to over 80 screen stories and screenplays. In addition to six Academy Award nominations, Hecht was awarded the first ever Academy Award for Best Story for the film Underworld (1927/1928). In 1935 he received the same award for the film The Scoundrel . Hecht worked frequently with producers David O. Selznick and Samuel Goldwyn and wrote or contributed to many classics of the Golden Age of Hollywood including Scarface (1932), Gone with the Wind (1939), Angels Over Broadway (1940), His Girl Friday (1940), Spellbound (1945), Notorious (1946), A Farewell to Arms (1957), and Mutiny on the Bounty (1962).
After Hecht appeared on The Mike Wallace Interview television program on February 15, 1958, Wallace and his producer, Ted Yates, believed that Hecht’s demeanor and outspoken opinions were well-suited for his own television show. The Ben Hecht Show debuted the same year, but due to its controversial subject matter, was cancelled after twenty-two weeks.
Ben Hecht died in New York City on April 18, 1964.

Title:
Paul Muni papers circa 1920-1967
The Paul Muni papers span the years 1920 through 1967 and consist of correspondence, photographs, clippings, scrapbooks, personal papers and writings documenting his career as an actor of stage and screen. The correspondence contains letters from many notables of the day and often discuss Muni's political and professional opinions. Correspondents include: Maxwell Anderson, Sherwood Anderson, Rex Beach, Noel Coward, Albert Einstein, Lion Feuchtwanger, John Golden, Arthur Hopkins, Helen Morgan, Dick Powell, Billy Rose and Blanche Yurka. Personal papers contain many programs and personal photographs as well as a notebook written by Muni in Hebrew or Yiddish and a sketch of him by Staats Cotsworth. Scrapbooks in the collection are primarily clippings with reviews and articles about Muni and his roles in plays and movies. However three of the scrapbooks document trips taken by him and his wife to Paris, Vienna and Israel. Other items of note include autographed photographs from friends and a photograph of Muni with Amelia Earhart on the set of The WOMAN I LOVE.

Title:
Palestine Statehood Committee : "Concerning the campaigns for a Jewish Army ; to save the Jewish people of Europe and the establishment of a Hebrew Republic in Palestine" papers, 1933-1972 (inclusive), 1939-1949 (bulk).

Dunning, Philip, 1890-1968. Philip Hart Dunning papers, 1915-1968.
Title:
Philip Hart Dunning papers, 1915-1968.
The collection contains many of Philip Hart Dunning's personal scripts which include play, radio, TV, and film scripts, one novel, and a few short stories. While the collection represents a large portion of his work, it is by no means complete. A small amount of related material such as preliminary notes, correspondence, contracts, clippings, etc. is included in the collection and filed according to play title with the script. In cases where there is no script, a title is represented only by a synopsis. The collection comprises 94 titles in all, including some associated items, at least one of which is dated after Dunning's death. In a few cases there is more than one version of a given title. Many of the scripts are original typescripts, however, most are copies, and most have annotations.

The pink hussar / by Ben Hecht. 1943.
"There is the germ of an idea for a musical or even a play in this whimsical, charming story, done with gentle satire, of a group of Hungarians, artists all of them, who hitch their wagons to the fading star of one of their company and get rich and famous. The main idea is not exactly new but has some novel twists to it .... A famed Hungarian playwright arrives in American and, in order to secure the success of his new play, his friends dope him up and take him to the hospital with the idea of telling the world that he as become stricken and is dying. Of course, the critics are fooled and they give the playwright and his play all the favorable publicity and reviews. As a result, the playwright and all his friends get the opportunities they had long awaited."--Leaf [1].

Swanson, Gloria. Papers. Series II. Career, ca. 1914-1983.
Title:
Papers. Series II. Career, ca. 1914-1983.
Nearly all of Miss Swanson's sixty-six motion pictures, 1914-1975, are represented by film stills and other materials. This collection does include some of Swanson's film holdings, though most were acquired by George Eastman House in 1967. Coverage is sparsest for her beginnings at Essanay Studios, Sennett/Keystone Studios, and Triangle Company. The Famous Players-Lasky Corp./Paramount Pictures period, 1919-1926, is more comprehensively documented with groups of stills and scrapbooks, clippings, correspondence, contracts, and publicity items. The substantial correspondence, financial, legal, and production records of the United Artists years, 1925-1933, occupy forty boxes, yet only meagre files for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios, Fox Films, and Columbia Pictures Corp. represent Swanson's career for the remainder of the 1930s. Records of the scattered later films with RKO Radio Pictures, Paramount Pictures Corp., Warner Brothers, Titanus-Lux Films, and Universal City Studios, Inc. complete this subseries. Of these, the fullest records exist for Swanson's famous appearance in Paramount's Sunset Boulevard in 1950. Also represented is Swanson's involvement in other entertainment branches, which extended to radio (1927-1981, including The Gloria Swanson Show, 1951), television (1944-1981, including The Gloria Swanson Hour broadcast during the "stone age" of television in 1948), and theatre (1937-1977, including three Broadway productions, Twentieth Century, Nina, and Butterflies Are Free). Correspondents in this series include Steve Allen, Eve Arden, Richard Banks, Vilma Banky, Beverly Bayne, Pierre A. Bedard, Francesca Bertini, Virginia Bowker, Walter Byron, James Card (George Eastman House), Richard Chamberlain, Charlie Chaplin, Ruth Chatterton, Dick Clark, Lenore J. Coffee, George Cukor, André Daven, Cecil B. DeMille, E. B. Derr, Marlene Dietrich, Allan Dwan, Ralph Edwards, Laurence Eyre, Douglas Fairbanks, José Ferrer, Blanche Friderici, Eva Gabor, Elinor Glyn, Samuel Goldwyn, Edmund Goulding, D. W. Kennedy, Alan Jay Lerner, Josephine Lovett, Clare Boothe Luce, Joseph L. Manuel Frères, Donald Biddle Keyes, Jack Mitchell, Nickolas Muray, Alexander Phillips, Melbourne Spurr, Edward Steichen), and lyricists and composers (most notably Edmund Goulding, Dickson Hughes, Elsie Janis, Franz Lehar, Dorothy Parker, Richard Stapley, and Vincent Youmans) is included in this collection. Also included in this series are career-related materials from actors' groups, film and television organizations, libraries, museums, and universities. The largest group of files included here center around the later records of Queen Kelly, 1956-1985, documenting ownership, copyright, domestic and foreign showings, television rights, use in documentary films, etc. Also included are files containing repository agreements and correspondence concerning Miss Swanson's personal film collection at the Museum of Modern Art (ca. 1944-1967) and George Eastman House (1967-1982).

Selznick, David O., 1902-1965. Studio archive, 1904-1980 (bulk 1936-1955).
Title:
Studio archive, 1904-1980 (bulk 1936-1955).
Contains records documenting every aspect of David O. Selznick's Hollywood studio operations including script development, production, publicity, finances, and distribution. The records follow film's pioneer days in New York through the heyday of the studio system in Hollywood, to the rise of television. Besides Selznick's independent productions such as A Star is Born (1937), Gone with the Wind (1939), and Rebecca (1940), the archive documents his association with three major studios, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Paramount, and RKO. Arranged according to the departmental division of Selznick's studio, the archive traces the evolution of films from story purchase through script development, casting, design, production, exploitation, distribution, and reissue. Though most of the materials document Selznick's independent career, there are also records concerning his personal affairs, his father's career, as well as films Selznick developed but never produced. The archive touches on virtually every major Hollywood person, studio, and event of the early 20th century. The archive is highlighted by David O. Selznick's personal files, found in Series I, and arranged in 28 sub-subseries. These records document Selznick's personal involvement in every aspect of his business and chronicle his life. Found in this subseries are clippings, confidential and personal files, coproduction and loanout files, correspondence, calendars, financial and legal files, interoffice files, MGM, Paramount, and RKO files, Myron Selznick estate files, photographs, safe deposit files, story files, talent files, and writers files.
