Series I, Biographical and personal, contains biographical material including interview transcripts, clippings and press releases, materials gathered for a proposed biography, family correspondence, personal correspondence, engagement calendars, and a few papers from college and graduate school. Series II, Labor movement, 1934-1960, consists mainly of papers relating to Peterson's work with the Bryn Mawr Summer School for Women Workers, Hudson Shore Labor School, the AFL-CIO Industrial Union Department, and her years in Sweden and Belgium (1948-1958). Most of the Bryn Mawr and Hudson Shore materials are printed. Series III, U.S. government, 1961-1969, is divided into two main subseries: Peterson's work in the Department of Labor (USDL) and her work as the nation's first Special Assistant to the President for Consumer Affairs (SAPCA). Included in the USDL papers are correspondence files and internal memos, and a large body of papers covering legislation, programs and policies specifically relating to women. This subseries includes papers of the President's Commission on the Status of Women. The SAPCA papers contain correspondence and printed material and document Peterson's difficulties within and outside the Johnson Administration. Series IV, Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America, contains correspondence files. Included are notes and photographs documenting her travel to Asia in 1969 on behalf of the U.S. State Department.
