The series contains correspondence of a personal nature about President Lyndon B. Johnson (LBJ) and his family, including letters addressed to the President by his friends, neighbors, extended family members, and the public. The correspondence includes thank you notes for White House and LBJ Ranch visits; get well wishes to the President during illnesses and reaction mail to the President revealing the scar from his gall bladder operation to newsmen; and congratulatory messages following his election on November 3, 1964.
The series includes letters of condolence from the general public, heads of state, government officials, and foreign dignitaries and citizens, on the deaths of President John F. Kennedy; former President Herbert Hoover; Senator Robert F. Kennedy; Martin Luther King, Jr.; General Douglas MacArthur; Adlai Stevenson; and the crew of Apollo 204 (Apollo 1), Virgil Grissom, Edward White and Roger Chaffee, who died in a fire during a preflight exercise.
The series includes anniversary, birthday, and holiday greetings, and congratulatory messages on the weddings of Luci Johnson to Patrick Nugent and Lynda Johnson Robb to Charles Robb, and the births of the President's grandchildren, Patrick Lyndon Nugent and Lucinda Desha Robb.
The series also contains correspondence with Mrs. Lady Bird Johnson and her staff, Elizabeth (Liz) Carpenter and Bess Abell, concerning Mrs. Johnson's social and official appearances, activities, speeches, and travels as First Lady. Topics included in this correspondence include the 1964 presidential campaign, highway and urban beautification, interviews with Mrs. Johnson, planning of the LBJ Presidential Library and Museum, honorary awards and degrees, and personal correspondence.
The series contains material concerning the planning of the 1965 inaugural celebrations, including invitation lists, schedules of activities, and progress reports sent to the President. Also included are materials concerning the 1969 inauguration and transition.
The series includes correspondence concerning honorary memberships, degrees and chairmanships offered to the President and his responses accepting or declining these offers. Some correspondence informs the President of schools, highways, parks, scholarships, libraries, housing projects and other features named in his honor. Other correspondence includes the President's acknowledgements of notifications of children named after him.
Correspondence and memorandums in the series contain information about the President, including his early life, education and career; the President's House and Senate voting records; the LBJ Ranch; the Birthplace and Boyhood Home; Johnson's religious affiliation and baptism in the Disciples of Christ; Johnson's military service and the awarding of the Silver Star; information concerning President Johnson's health and hobbies; correspondence concerning his dogs Him, Her, Blanco and Yuki and reaction mail to the President's lifting his beagles by their ears; and genealogical information and material for various biographies.
The series includes correspondence with and about members of the President's immediate family, including recollections of the President's mother from friends and family; material concerning the President's ancestors; correspondence about his daughters Luci Johnson and Lynda Johnson Robb; and correspondence about the military service of his sons-in-law, Charles Robb and Patrick Nugent.
This series contains letters, memorandums, telegrams, invitations, reports, lists, clippings, and publications.
