Glenn Hammond Curtiss (1878-1930) was an aviator and businessman. He developed the first practical amphibious airplane, as well as testing ship-based take-offs and landings.
Glenn Curtiss (1878-1930), a successful motorcycle manufacturer in Hammondsport, New York, became legendary in the aviation world. Curtiss' entree into aviation came in the early years of 1900 when balloonist Thomas Baldwin used a Curtiss-built engine to power a balloon. By 1906 nearly all dirigibles in the U.S. were using a Curtiss engine. One of Curtiss' engines powered the first U.S. Army aircraft, the dirigible SC-1. In 1907, Curtiss and Alexander Graham Bell, founded the Aerial Experiment Association (AEA) which designed and built several aircraft. One of the aircraft built by the AEA was the first American aircraft to be equipped with ailerons, the White Wing. The invention of the aileron led to a patent fight between Curtiss and the Wright brothers. The AEA also built the first seaplane to be flown in the United States.
Curtiss continued to prove himself as a leader in the air. In 1908, Curtiss flew his plane, the June Bug, which was the first he had built, and won the Scientific American Trophy for making the first public flight of more than one kilometer in the United States. In 1909 at the Rheims Air Meet in France., Curtiss followed up his success by flying his Golden Flyer at the best speed in a two-lap triangular 6.2-mile course, averaging 47 miles per hour to win the Gordon Bennett Trophy and a $5,000 prize.
Other firsts in aviation achieved by a Curtiss plane include the first takeoff and landing on the deck of a ship in 1911, and the first transatlantic crossing in 1919 made by the NC-4. Curtiss also built the first U.S. Navy aircraft, called the Triad and trained the first two naval pilots. He received the prestigious Collier Trophy and the Aero Club Gold Medal in 1911.
The Curtiss Aeroplane and Motor Company was the largest aircraft manufacturer in the world during World War I. When it went public in 1916, it was the world's largest aviation company. During World War I, it produced 10,000 aircraft. In 1929, twelve Wright and Curtiss-affiliated companies merged to form The Curtiss-Wright Corporation. The company still exists.

Title:
James Carruthers Memorial Aviation Collection of the Institute of Aeronautical History Circa 1700-2004.
The collection consists of prints and drawings, handbills, photographs, postcards, printed materials (including books, periodicals, bibliographies, journal articles, newspaper clippings, event programs, conference agenda and reports, manuscripts, telegrams, letters, press kits and releases, corporate overviews, investment prospectuses, sales brochures, technical specification sheets, typescript histories, and guides), maps, sheet music, sound recordings, ephemera, and memorabilia collected by Dr. John F. B. Carruthers and documenting the history of aviation, with particular emphasis on the period from 1783 to the late 1950s. The prints and drawings document in particular the development of French and British ballooning from 1783 to 1785, British ballooning in the 19th century, and historic U.S. civil and military aircraft, including balloons, dirigibles, and fixed-wing airplanes, 1903 to circa 1950. Photographic, printed, and other materials document early air meets and historic flights, including the original records of Cecil Allen and Donald Moyle's 1931 transpacific flight. The materials also document pioneer aviators, including Glenn Curtiss, Amelia Earhart, Arch Hoxey, A. Roy Knabenshue, and Clyde Pangborn. Materials on the Wright brothers include a toy butterfly purported to have inspired their interest in flight, and a piece of the 1903 Kitty Hawk hangar; materials on Charles A. Lindbergh include two metal pieces from the "Spirit of St. Louis" and sound recordings of his 1927 visit to Washington, DC, upon his return from Paris. The collection also contains extensive photographic and printed materials on individual aircraft, aircraft manufacturers, and airlines, including historic 19th-century aircraft and, in particular, aircraft of U.S., British, French, and German manufacture between 1930 and 1960. The collection includes a large number of draft maps and plans of airports and airfields, circa 1924-1931, prepared by the Aeronautics Branch of the U.S. Department of Commerce, as well as sheet music of songs on aeronautical themes, 1876-1952.

Documents, correspondence, photographs, clippings, pamphlets, ephemera, and other materials created and/or collected by Edward J. Finan over the course of his life and while preparing a book on aviation during the years 1908-1915. There are personal statements documenting Finan's military career during World War I in the U.S. Navy, as well as his later service in the Merchant Marines. His personal statements and correspondence reflect his participation in early aviation events at Cicero Field in Chicago, Illinois. The majority of the correspondence was created in Finan's efforts to acquire photographs and information regarding early aviation for the Pioneers of the Skyway. The bulk of the photographs depict aviators and aviation events during the years 1908-1915, but also include Lighter-than-Air transport and photographs from after World War II. The newspaper clippings reflect Finan's ongoing interest in aviation from the years 1945-1981. The majority of the clippings are from the 1950s and were written to commemorate the 50th anniversary of flight. Many of these clippings recount early aviation. The papers also contain scrapbooks assembled
