Colt, Roswell L. (Roswell Lyman), 1779-1856. Papers, 1808-1854.
Title:
Papers, 1808-1854.
These papers consist primarily of business, political, and social correspondence of Roswell L. Colt of Paterson, N.J. The material reflects Colt's penchant for speculation in lands in Oneida, N.Y., Pennsylvania, Maryland, and western property, as well as coal, iron, canals, and railroads. His debts to the Bank of the U. S. and the estate of his father-in-law are also treated. There is evidence of Colt's position as financial advisor to his brother, John M. Colt, textile manufacturer, his cousin Samuel Colt, arms manufacturer, Nicholas Biddle, and Daniel Webster. American politics are frequent topics in the letters. Toward the end of Colt's life, much of the correspondence concerns his agricultural and horticultural interests. Correspondents include: Nicholas Biddle, Richard M. Blatchford, John W. Bloomfield, William A. Bradley, John M. Colt, Samuel Colt, Herman P. Cope, John Devereux, R. M. Gibbes, D. M. Perine, Daniel Webster, and various members of the Hone Club of New York. There are also some bills, reciepts, and other miscellaneous papers.

Samuel Colt papers, 1808-1904.
A collection of letters, patents, drawings, maps, and other items relating to Colonel Samuel Colt. Colt is well known for his invention of a repeating firearm, but was also involved with tin foil cartridges, submarine batteries, and the magnetic telegram. Colt died in Hartford, Connecticut in 1862. Papers relating to his estate can also be found within the collection. Additionally, the collection houses the papers of Colt's wife, Elizabeth. Samples of tin foil were included with some of the letters. There are also two photographs, possibly of Elizabeth Colt. Colt's correspondence was, among others, with family, friends, and members of the government. Colt's repeating firearm earned him a contract with the United States government during the Mexican American War. He was also issued patents for his inventions. The library has an index of Colt's correspondence, sorted by date and by names of recipient and writer.

Elliott, Ely A. Ely A. Elliott militia correspondence and documents, 1814-1830.
Title:
Ely A. Elliott militia correspondence and documents, 1814-1830.
Correspondence addressed to Brigadier-General Ely A. Elliott of Killingworth, Connecticut, regarding Connecticut militia matters such as ordnance and men seeking a discharge. Elliott was the general of state artillery from 1829-1832. His most frequent correspondents were Horace W. Goodwin, Julius Clark and M.A. Durand. Also includes an enlistment order, muster rolls and pay rolls for militia guarding Saybrook and Killingworth, 1814, and regimental and brigade orders and certificates of service for soldiers, 1823-1828. One folder of seemingly unrelated contain some interesting documents, including a letter to John Pierce of Chatham, Connecticut, about the government's plans to purchase land in the Arkansas Territory, 1815; a bill for supplies for building a ship or at least replacing the sails, 1816; a letter from Samuel Colt to Jesse Hurd, 1823, about Hurd's request for forged kedges (light anchors); a bill for digging graves, 1823, at an unknown location; and a letter from David C. Collins about a delivery of Morgan's best axes, 1825.

Elisha Kent Kane Papers, Bulk, 1843-1857, 1810-1953
Title:
Elisha Kent Kane Papers Bulk, 1843-1857 1810-1953
The most stellar member of a stellar family, Elisha Kent Kane was among the most popular American explorers of the mid-nineteenth century, a hero in the tragic mode. Born in Philadelphia in 1820, the son of John Kintzing Kane and Jane Duval Leiper, Kane studied medicine at the University of Pennsylvania before earning a commission as a naval surgeon. While in the Navy, Kane embarked on the succession of voyages to exotic locales that became the basis for his extraordinary fame. In 1843, he attended Caleb Cushing's first diplomatic mission to China as ship's physician, and subsequently traveled to the Philippines and Western Africa. Distinguishing himself in the Mexican War, Kane's greatest fame came from two expeditions to the arctic, aiming to locate the lost explorer, Sir John Franklin and to explore for evidence of the open polar sea. Kane died in 1857 while attempting to organize a third arctic voyage. Part of the Kane Family Collection, the Papers of Elisha Kent Kane contain a mix of personal and family correspondence with correspondence relating to all of Kane's explorations. Intelligent, articulate and very much a romantic, Kane's letters are expressive and passionate. The collection provides fine documentation of youth, his relationship with the Spiritualist Margaret Fox, and of course his travels to China and off the coast of Africa in 1846. Kane's two expeditions to the arctic are particularly well documented, with correspondence, notes, logbooks, diaries, and sketches, as well as Kane's post-expedition notes, writings, and lectures recounting his experiences.

Rains, Gabriel James, 1803-1881. Gabriel J. Rains papers, 1840-1865.
Title:
Gabriel J. Rains papers, 1840-1865.
Papers consist of correspondence and a copy of a newspaper article. A copy of Captain Rains' letter (1840 July 30) to Joel R. Poinsett (U.S. Secretary of War) recommends "Colt's repeating firearms" and requests to have them furnished to his company (Company A of the 7th U.S. Infantry Regiment). Poinsett replies (1840 Aug. 20) that "it is not deemed expedient to comply with your wishes at present." Samuel Colt writes to Poinsett (1840 Aug. 3) requesting a copy of Captain Rains' letter about his firearms. A letter (1849 Nov. 26) from U.S. Treasurer W. [Susen] to [Lt.?] Major Rains in Tampa Bay (Fla.) concerns a financial transaction involving four hundred dollars in Treasury notes. Gabriel J. Rains' letter (1862 July 5) to his brother George W. Rains in Augusta (Ga.) contains copies of several letters between Brigadier General Gabriel J. Rains, General D.H. Hill, George W. Randolph (C.S.A. Secretary of War), and General Longstreet concerning the use of artillery, mines, and torpedoes "to obstruct the advance of the enemy;" difficulties between General Rains and General Longstreet; and defenses and battles on the James River. In a letter (1865 March 8) from Greensboro (N.C.) to his daughter in Richmond (Va.) Gabriel J. Rains asks her to forward a letter to Captain [Fuller] and describes conditions in Greensboro, "incessant rain so that the roads are 2 feet deep with mud and water in places and no army in the world could move this way." Handwritten copy of a newspaper article (1865) concerns the arrest of Gabriel J. Rains.
