While Assistant Alderman, Johnson received numerous letters of application from citizens seeking patronage for a variety of municipal offices, ranging from requests to be a night watchman to a position as a municipal court justice. Also, letters, reports, and other documents relating to various municipal services such as health, welfare, fire fighting, street maintenance, water, sewers, railroads, ferries, and stage coaches. Some letters and documents concern Whig Party politics in the 3rd Ward. Johnson's correspondence as a New York Society Library Trustee refers to the proposed merger with the New York Athenaeum. Also, twelve items relating to his term in the State Senate, covering taxation and control of foreign laborers.

Connecticut and New York State deeds, business and personal correspondence, business agreements, estate records, financial records, diaries, and college essays of several generations of a Stratford, Connecticut, family. Of note are the Chancery Court records kept by William Samuel Johnson (1795-1883). Most of these records relate to the guardianship of the Mcdonough children and the settlement of the Rossiter estate. Among the collection are records for the construction of a parsonage in Stratford for the Episcopal Society, along with other administrative and disciplinary documents regarding the church, and letters concerning iron ore found in Kent, Connecticut. There are also letters and deeds about investing in land in Tioga County, New York. Of note are Anne Frances Johnson's religious diaries from 1813-1839. This volume of minutes, 1850-1857, includes entry, 14 Jan. 1852, in which the board authorized H.B. Williams as agent, in connection with the Bank of Charlotte, N.C., "to purchase or sell Exchange...on Charleston, N. York, or other points." The question of the "doubtful health of the several officers of the Bank" arose on 29 November 1854. The board decided to hire a new clerk and reduce the salaries of the cashier and teller. Also during this meeting, the board allowed Johnson to pay off certain notes early in case a large note, for which he was liable, should not be paid. Unbound volume, 1855-1870, indexed account book indicating notes outstanding, rates of interest, and purchase and sale of exchange in New York and other areas. Two documents dating to Reconstruction period, 13 October 1868 and 1 May 1869, issued by the Bank of Camden, reports to the Comptroller General of the State of South Carolina, signed by W.D. McDowall, cashier, and listing among the bank's assets Confederate bonds.
